This provides not only a scenic pathway but also educational opportunities with informational signs and a visitor center nearby. Operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, this campground ensures a well-maintained area for public use. Modoc is a small, unincorporated community in Randolph County, Illinois, known for its rural tranquility and its close proximity to significant waterways and historical sites.
The campground's setting along the Kaskaskia River, near its confluence with the mighty Mississippi River, is a major geographical highlight. This strategic position offers stunning views and unique recreational opportunities. For essential supplies and a wider range of services, nearby towns such as Chester, IL, (approximately 20-30 minutes away) offer grocery stores, gas stations, restaurants, and other conveniences. The area is renowned for its natural beauty and historical significance, including connections to the Lewis & Clark National Historic Trail. The well-maintained "paved hiking trail to the confluence of the rivers" directly accessible from the campground makes it easy for visitors to explore the unique landscape and learn about the region's natural and cultural heritage. Kaskaskia River Project Campground, managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, provides essential services designed for a comfortable and enjoyable camping experience. While it maintains a rustic charm, it focuses on core amenities for its 15 available spots:
Campsites with Electric Hookups: All 15 available campsites are equipped with electric hookups (30 & 50 Amp), making it convenient for RVs and trailers. This is a significant feature, as not all smaller campgrounds offer electricity at every site.
Vault Toilets: The campground provides "Vault toilets" for restroom facilities. While not full flush facilities, they are maintained for cleanliness, as suggested by positive overall reviews.
Picnic Tables and Grills: Each campsite typically includes a picnic table and a grill, allowing campers to prepare meals and enjoy outdoor dining right at their site.
Asphalt Pads and Waste Receptacles: Sites feature asphalt pads for parking RVs or setting up tents, and waste receptacles are available for convenient trash disposal, contributing to the cleanliness of the area.
Automated Fee Machine: Payment for campsites is facilitated by an on-site automated fee machine, which accepts credit cards. This offers a convenient and self-service registration process for campers.
First-Come, First-Served Sites: The campground operates on a "first come first serve" basis for its sites, which is important for planning. While there might be options for pre-registering electric spots in certain contexts, for this specific campground, reviews indicate a primary first-come, first-served approach.
No Potable Water/Sewage Hookups: It's important for campers to note that there is "No potable water" and "No sewage hookups" directly at the individual sites. Water access is available at the dump station, and campers should plan accordingly for water needs. There are no showers either.
Pet Policy: Pets are allowed at the campground, though specific rules (e.g., leash requirements, waste cleanup) would apply, as is standard for public campgrounds.
These services ensure that campers have fundamental amenities for a pleasant stay, aligning with the more rustic yet well-equipped nature of a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers managed campground.

Fishing and Boating Access: The Kaskaskia River is a popular destination for fishing (stocked with various species) and boating. Two boat launches are located just outside of the campground, providing easy access to the water for anglers and boaters. Swimming is also possible in safe areas of the river.
Well-Maintained Area: Reviews suggest a "Very nice area," implying good upkeep and cleanliness, which contributes to a positive camping experience.

As a campground managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Kaskaskia River Project Campground typically operates on a standardized fee schedule rather than offering frequent "promotions" or "special offers" in the commercial sense. Its value proposition is primarily derived from its affordable rates, well-maintained facilities, and unique natural and historical setting. However, here are points relevant to its pricing structure and potential benefits:
Consistent, Affordable Daily Rates: The campsites are priced at a flat rate of $20 per night, which is generally considered very affordable for a site with electric hookups in Illinois, especially given the recreational amenities and scenic location. This consistent low price is a continuous "offer" for budget-conscious campers.
Automated Payment Convenience: The availability of an on-site automated fee machine that accepts credit cards simplifies the payment process, making it easy for campers to register and pay upon arrival without needing exact cash or interacting with staff during off-hours.
Value of Included Amenities: The inclusion of electric hookups, picnic tables, grills, asphalt pads, and access to vault toilets at the fixed nightly rate offers good value for the cost. These are standard amenities that enhance the camping experience without additional charges.
First-Come, First-Served Access: While not a discount, the first-come, first-served availability for all 15 sites provides flexibility for spontaneous trips, eliminating the need for advance booking which can sometimes be a barrier for last-minute planners.
Access to Free Recreational and Educational Features: The "nice hiking/biking trail" to the confluence of the rivers, the visitor center, and informational signs are all free to access for campers and day-use visitors, adding significant value to a stay at the campground.

Customer Reviews
Very nice 15 spot campground. All have electric hookups. Vault toilets. Nice hiking/biking trail that leads to the confluence of the Kaskaskia and Mississippi rivers.
Nice, paved hiking trail to the confluence of the rivers with plenty of paved parking, a visitor center, and informational signs on site for educational purposes. Very nice area, glad I heard about it from a friend, looked it up and and decided to go check it out.
A good hike for a rainy day. The asphalt trail kept us from getting muddy. A very nice view of the Mississippi and Kaskaskia rivers.
Great place to sit down and relax, clean, above the river, full serviced. For a traveller like me, it's a surprise to find a lovely place like this.
Please dont go, I want to make sure there is a space for me. All joking aside, it is fantastic in it's simplicity. The sites are level and clean. The fire pit is nicely located on the site. The river side sites are just a few easy steps from the water. The boat launch at the camping area was closed due to low water level but the ramp above the lock was very nice, again. Locking through was easy. The potty house just that, it was simple amd clean. The one thing that I think could be improved is the water supply, the is one faucet behind the potty house, that's it.
