Crowley Dam Rustic Canoe Campsite About
For many Wisconsinites, the allure of the state's Northwoods lies in its pristine rivers, vast forests, and the promise of truly disconnecting from the everyday. Among the myriad ways to experience this natural beauty, canoe camping offers a unique and intimate adventure, allowing paddlers to explore waterways and set up camp in serene, often remote, locations. These rustic campsites are far removed from the bustling crowds of larger campgrounds, providing a genuine wilderness experience that resonates deeply with those who cherish solitude and the sounds of nature.
Deep within the expansive Flambeau River State Forest, near the charming community of Park Falls, lies Crowley Dam Rustic Canoe Campsite. This particular site is a prime example of the rustic, paddle-in/paddle-out camping opportunities that make Wisconsin's river systems so appealing. It's designed specifically for those navigating the Flambeau River, offering a tranquil and well-equipped stop for overnight stays. Unlike traditional drive-up campgrounds, Crowley Dam emphasizes a more adventurous and self-sufficient style of camping, perfect for canoeists and kayakers seeking an immersive outdoor experience. The very nature of a "rustic canoe campsite" implies a focus on essential amenities and a respectful integration into the natural environment, ensuring that the beauty of the surroundings remains unspoiled.
Crowley Dam Rustic Canoe Campsite is often mentioned by those familiar with the Flambeau River's paddling routes as a noteworthy stopping point. Its specific design, including unique Adirondack cabins, sets it apart and enhances the rustic camping adventure, offering a level of shelter beyond what a typical tent site provides. For Wisconsin locals who enjoy silent sports and wilderness exploration, understanding the offerings of such a campsite is crucial for planning an unforgettable trip down one of the state's most iconic rivers.
Crowley Dam Rustic Canoe Campsite is located near Park Falls, WI 54552, USA. It's important to note that as a "canoe campsite," it is primarily accessible by water, typically via the Flambeau River. This means it doesn't have a direct drive-up address in the conventional sense, as access is part of the paddling journey. Park Falls itself is a city in Price County, northern Wisconsin, nestled amidst the vast forests that define the region.
For paddlers, accessibility to Crowley Dam is part of the Flambeau River experience. The river is divided into two forks, the North and South Forks, which converge before flowing through areas like Crowley Dam. Access points to the Flambeau River are available at various locations upstream, allowing paddlers to choose their desired length of trip. Common put-in points are found in areas around Phillips or other designated access sites within the Flambeau River State Forest. From these points, paddlers embark on a scenic journey downriver, with Crowley Dam serving as a designated overnight stop.
While the campsite itself is water-accessible, the general area around Park Falls is well-connected by state highways like Highway 13, which runs directly through Park Falls. This highway connects to larger towns and cities in Wisconsin, making it relatively straightforward for campers to reach the vicinity by vehicle before embarking on their canoe trip. The remote nature of the campsite ensures a genuine wilderness experience, but its location along a well-traveled paddling route means it's a known and anticipated stop for those exploring the Flambeau River. This unique blend of remoteness and navigational accessibility makes it an ideal destination for an authentic Wisconsin river adventure.
As a rustic canoe campsite, Crowley Dam focuses on providing fundamental amenities for paddlers, prioritizing functionality and minimal environmental impact. Based on available information and user reviews, here are the services and facilities typically offered:
- Adirondack Cabins: A standout feature of this campsite. These three-sided, lean-to shelters offer a unique and somewhat more protected sleeping option than a traditional tent, especially useful in variable weather conditions. They provide a sturdy roof and a raised floor, keeping campers off the ground.
- Campsites/Sleeping Areas: In addition to the cabins, there are likely designated areas for tent pitching for those who prefer their own shelter or when cabins are occupied.
- Porta-Potty: Reviews confirm the presence of a porta-potty, which is described as being in "good condition." This provides a convenient and necessary sanitary facility in a rustic setting.
- Picnic Tables: Each designated camping area or cabin is equipped with a picnic table, providing a stable surface for meal preparation and dining.
- Fire Rings: Campers will find fire rings available for building campfires, essential for cooking, warmth, and the quintessential camping ambiance.
- Views of the River: Being situated right on the Flambeau River, the campsite, particularly the Adirondack cabins, offers direct views of the water, enhancing the natural experience.
- Designated Canoe/Kayak Landing: As a canoe campsite, there will be an accessible spot along the riverbank for easy landing and launching of watercraft.
It is crucial to remember that "rustic" implies a lack of modern conveniences such as electricity, running water (beyond the river itself), or flush toilets. Campers should be prepared to bring all necessary supplies, including drinking water, and practice Leave No Trace principles.
Crowley Dam Rustic Canoe Campsite offers several unique features and highlights that make it a desirable stop for paddlers on the Flambeau River:

As a rustic canoe campsite managed within the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) system, Crowley Dam Rustic Canoe Campsite does not typically offer promotional codes, discounts, or special seasonal offers in the way a private campground might. Pricing for state forest campsites is generally standardized by the DNR.
However, it is important for campers to be aware of the following regarding fees and regulations:
- Campsite Fees: There will be a standard per-night fee for using the campsite, including the Adirondack cabins. These fees contribute to the maintenance and management of the site. Specific rates can be found on the Wisconsin DNR website or by contacting the Flambeau River State Forest headquarters.
- Vehicle Admission Sticker: While the campsite itself is canoe-in, if you are leaving a vehicle at an access point within a state forest or park, a Wisconsin State Parks and Forest vehicle admission sticker (daily or annual) is typically required for parking.
- Reservations: Campsites like Crowley Dam are often reservable through the Wisconsin DNR reservation system, particularly the cabins, which can be popular. Making a reservation in advance is highly recommended, especially during peak paddling seasons, to ensure availability.
- Firewood Regulations: Campers must adhere to Wisconsin's firewood regulations, which generally prohibit bringing firewood from outside a 10-mile radius unless it is DATCP certified. This is to prevent the spread of invasive species and diseases. It's best to purchase local firewood near Park Falls or use certified wood.
For the most accurate and current information on fees, reservation procedures, and any specific guidelines for using the site, paddlers should consult the official Wisconsin DNR website for the Flambeau River State Forest or contact the forest headquarters directly.

Customer Reviews
We did not camp here; we got caught in the rain and camped at Pixley Dam instead. When we portaged here, it looked much nicer than Pixley Dam campground. The Adirondack cabins have a view of the river. The porta potty is in good condition. Picnic tables and fire ring in good condition as well.
