Lake Jericho is more than just a body of water; it’s a community asset that provides a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Imagine spending a quiet afternoon fishing from the shore, enjoying a picnic with family and friends against a breathtaking backdrop, or watching the sunset over the water. The serene environment makes it an ideal location for those who appreciate the simpler pleasures of the outdoors. Its reputation for incredible views certainly precedes it, drawing visitors back time and again.
However, like any popular outdoor destination, understanding the operational aspects is key to a smooth and enjoyable visit. While the natural beauty is undeniable, some user experiences highlight important considerations regarding site management and adherence to rules. Despite these occasional challenges, the fundamental appeal of Lake Jericho – its scenic charm and recreational potential – remains a strong draw for Kentuckians looking for a lovely spot to unwind and engage with nature.
Lake Jericho Recreational Area is conveniently located at 1317 Lake Access Rd, Smithfield, KY 40068, USA. Smithfield itself is a small, charming community, and the lake is a prominent feature of the local landscape.
From Louisville, Lake Jericho is typically an easy drive heading northeast, generally taking less than an hour, depending on traffic conditions. From Lexington or Frankfort, the drive is also manageable, usually within an hour to an hour and a half, traversing scenic Kentucky roadways. The "Lake Access Road" in the address clearly indicates direct vehicular access to the recreational area, including potential camping and picnic spots. This direct access is a significant convenience, allowing visitors to drive right to their desired activity area, whether it's a fishing spot or a picnic site.
The clear signage and well-maintained access roads leading to the recreational area contribute to its accessibility. While the experience of finding and utilizing specific spots within the area might sometimes present challenges (as per customer reviews about reserved spots), the overall journey to Lake Jericho is straightforward for anyone familiar with navigating Kentucky's state and county roads. Lake Jericho Recreational Area, while renowned for its natural beauty and recreational opportunities, offers services primarily geared towards day-use activities like fishing and picnicking, with some capacity for camping. Based on available information and user reviews, the services typically include:
It's crucial for prospective campers to be aware of the "honor box" system mentioned in one review, and the potential for confusion or lack of direct management presence, especially if visiting during off-peak hours or weekdays. This suggests a more informal setup than a fully staffed campground. Furthermore, the review regarding a reserved spot being taken highlights the importance of proactive communication with management (if available) or arriving early to secure a paid spot. Amenities like electricity, water hookups at individual sites, or shower facilities are not explicitly mentioned and should not be assumed. Campers should be prepared for a more primitive camping experience.
Lake Jericho Recreational Area stands out for several appealing features and highlights, drawing visitors for its natural charm:
However, it is vital to acknowledge and consider potential challenges based on negative customer feedback. Issues with managing reserved spots and handling of disputes, as well as concerns about dogs running free, are significant factors for potential visitors. These operational challenges, while not detracting from the inherent natural beauty, necessitate a cautious approach and clear communication when planning a visit, especially for camping.
As a public recreational area, and based on the provided information and reviews, Lake Jericho Recreational Area does not appear to offer traditional commercial "promotions" or "special offers" in the way a privately-owned campground might. The pricing structure for using picnic areas or camping spots seems to be based on a fixed fee, potentially collected via an "honor box" system.
The key "offer" for this area is its natural beauty and accessible recreational opportunities at what is likely a reasonable public park fee. Any payment collected for camping spots or facility use would typically contribute to the maintenance and operation of the recreational area.
It is crucial for prospective visitors to understand the payment system and any associated fees clearly. The review mentioning an "honor box" suggests a self-service payment method, which might be in place when staff, such as a campground manager, is not readily available. If specific spots are being rented, as implied by the review, visitors should ensure they understand the reservation process and how to definitively secure their chosen spot. It is always recommended to call ahead using the provided contact number to clarify current fees, payment methods, and any site-specific rules or requirements before visiting.
There are no indications of discounts for extended stays, seasonal passes, or special event pricing mentioned in the available data. Any changes to fees or operational procedures would likely be communicated by the management of the Lake Jericho Recreational Area, possibly through signage at the park or via phone.

What a beautiful spot for fishing or a picnic – the view is incredible!
May 18, 2025 · suhair fadhilRented a spot, went down to the picnic area, and someone had set camp on the very spot I paid for. Missy sent me to the spot personally, around 2:30 in the afternoon. Guess people can't remember what spots they rent out, and let other people just come and take the spot, right away from you, and they don't make it right!!! Don't waste your time with this place. They allow dogs to run free, and don't make the owners put their dogs on leashes. Missy came down, and literally bullied me out of the park, threatened to call the law, because I didn't agree, I wasn't breaking any laws for her to call the law 😅 so they have a bulldog on guard. Seeing how it was my fault I didn't place my personal property on the site, it's ok for people to come set up. Downloading dashcam of her coming down to convince me it was my fault, maybe put it on your "RULES" that clearly doesn't have to be followed.
Jun 03, 2025 · Gwen BlackBeautiful views! Excellent, clean grounds. We have stayed at a lot of campgrounds in Ky & In, some of which you couldn't enjoy taking walks due to odor issues (black tank/sewage smells), but NONE OF THAT HERE! A lot of space to explore. Great for fishing or just relaxing at one of many picnic tables scattered all throughout the park. Very friendly staff. 5 ⭐️s and 2👍🏻 👍🏻
Jun 26, 2023 · P MillerBest camping spot in the world! My family have been calling here for 30+years. We alwayshave or family reunions here. We well never go anywhere else. Great fishing and camping for the entire family. They are pet friendly. The only downfall to going here is no Swimming! Other than that best experience ever!
Sep 30, 2019 · Dejalil$2 to go camping on gorgeous grounds with lake, hiking areas, forests, shower facilities and areas for hookups. Not far from Lagrange. It’s dry county, so if you drink BYOB. During the summertime there are golf cart blindfolded party races and during Halloween there an impressive hayride through the haunted forest.
