Lake Shelby About

For those of us living in Kentucky, seeking a refreshing escape into nature doesn't always mean a long drive to a remote wilderness. Nestled conveniently in Shelbyville, Lake Shelby Campground offers a unique blend of accessibility and natural tranquility, making it a fantastic option for a quick weekend getaway or a longer, peaceful retreat. Operated by Shelbyville/Shelby County Parks and Recreation, this campground provides a scenic setting by the lake, catering to various camping styles from primitive tent sites to more amenity-rich RV spots.

Lake Shelby itself, built in 1949, is a 20-acre body of water that serves as a focal point for the park's recreational activities. While the campground has seen its share of operational discussions, the core appeal remains: a peaceful natural environment within easy reach of urban conveniences. It’s a place where you can wake up to the sounds of nature, enjoy fishing or paddling on the lake, and unwind by a campfire, all without straying too far from home. This balance makes Lake Shelby a suitable and appealing choice for many Kentuckians looking to recharge in the great outdoors.

The campground aims to offer a quiet and peaceful environment, making it ideal for families, couples, or individuals seeking a break from the everyday hustle. While some administrative aspects have received mixed feedback, the serene natural setting and the opportunity for lakeside relaxation remain key attractions. It's a place where many have found much-needed peace, reminding us of the restorative power of nature right here in our own state.

The campground's location by Lake Shelby provides a scenic backdrop and opportunities for water-based activities. While you can drive directly to the campground, access to individual campsites involves parking within designated spots. The overall accessibility makes Lake Shelby Campground a convenient choice for those in central Kentucky seeking a blend of outdoor experience and ease of access to modern conveniences.

Services Offered

Lake Shelby Campground provides a range of services designed to accommodate both RV and primitive tent campers. While experiences can vary, the general offerings include:

  • RV Sites: The campground features dedicated RV sites, some of which are described as "full hookup" sites (water, electric, and sewer). Other RV sites may offer water and electric hookups only, with a dump station available nearby for sewer disposal. Power service is generally 50 amp, with adapters potentially available for 30 amp.
  • Tent Camping Areas: There are designated areas for tent campers, including "waterfront primitive spots" that are spacious and offer a sense of natural immersion. These sites may be a quick walk to communal facilities.
  • Restrooms and Showers: Clean bathhouses with flush toilets and showers are generally available for campers, a significant convenience especially for primitive tent campers.
  • Picnic Tables and Fire Rings: Most campsites, both RV and tent, are equipped with a picnic table and a fire ring/grill for cooking and campfires.
  • Water Access: Potable water hookups are available at RV sites, and shared water sources are usually accessible for tent campers.
  • Lake Access: The campground provides direct access to Lake Shelby for various activities. A boat launch is available, with fees for motorized and non-motorized boats. Canoes are also available for hourly rental.
  • Laundry Facilities: Some information indicates the presence of credit card laundry facilities on site, which is a useful amenity for longer stays.
  • Trash Service: Dumpster service is provided within the park for proper trash disposal.
  • Pet-Friendly: Pets are generally welcome but must be kept on a leash and owners are responsible for cleaning up after them.
  • Security: Some RV park descriptions mention monitored security cameras, aiming to provide a safe environment.

It's important for campers to note that while amenities are provided, their condition and availability can sometimes be subject to local management and maintenance, as hinted by some customer feedback regarding specific features like fire rings.

Promotions or Special Offers

Specific, regularly advertised promotions or special offers for Lake Shelby Campground are not widely published as they might be for larger commercial operations. As a facility managed by Shelbyville/Shelby County Parks and Recreation, any discounts or special rates would typically be announced directly through their channels. Campers are encouraged to inquire about potential offers when making reservations or contacting the park office.

However, based on typical park operations, some general considerations for potential savings or specific booking details include:

  • Seasonal Rates: Camping rates can sometimes vary by season, with lower prices possible during the off-peak months (e.g., late fall or early spring) compared to the busy summer season. Lake Shelby Campground is typically open from April 1 to October 31, with long-term RV stays potentially available during the non-peak season (November 16 – March 14).
  • Long-Term Stays: For RV campers, there might be weekly or monthly rates that offer savings over daily rates, particularly during specific periods. It's noted that "monthly rates start at $445 and go up to $695 for the preferred creek front with concrete pad sites," and these rates "include tax and electric."
  • Park Pass Programs: While not a direct campground promotion, visitors who frequently use Shelby County Parks facilities might benefit from any broader park passes or membership programs offered by Shelbyville/Shelby County Parks and Recreation, though these primarily cover park access rather than specific camping discounts.

Given the occasional feedback regarding management practices (as seen in one customer review), it is highly advisable to confirm all pricing, payment methods, and reservation details directly with the campground or parks department before your visit to avoid any misunderstandings. Always ask about current rates and any potential deals that may not be widely advertised.

After taking the advice from a friend to go camping for 1-2 nights after losing my heart dog suddenly I did a quick google search and found this place. I had a waterfront primitive spot that was spacious but still just a quick walk to the showers/bathroom. I am looking forward to spring/summer and camping here again. It brought me some peace I needed during a difficult time.

We've been coming here for the past five years and it just keeps getting better. The grounds are well kept. The bath house is kept clean at all times. The guys enjoy fishing both from several new piers or taking the boat out. The kids love the paddle boats and enjoy riding their bikes in a safe area. All in all, the host and manager are doing a great job and we look forward to returning.
