For generations of Pennsylvanians, the call of the "Pennsylvania Grand Canyon" has signaled the start of an unforgettable outdoor adventure. At the heart of this majestic region, on the eastern rim of the Pine Creek Gorge, lies Leonard Harrison Campground. This is not just a place to pitch a tent or park an RV; it is the definitive gateway to the most famous, breathtaking views of what is affectionately known as the Grand Canyon of the East.
Leonard Harrison State Park, a sprawling 585-acre jewel in Tioga County, offers locals a quintessential North Central Pennsylvania experience. It combines the raw, natural beauty of an ancient, glacier-carved gorge with the modern, clean amenities that make a camping trip comfortable and worry-free. Guests consistently praise the atmosphere, noting it as a "Beautiful campsite right at the Grand Canyon of The East" with facilities that are "super clean." It is the perfect blend of wild seclusion and convenient access, serving as the basecamp for exploring the 12,163-acre Pine Creek Gorge National Natural Landmark.
Whether you are a seasoned backpacker, a family looking for a weekend escape, or a couple seeking autumn's spectacular fall foliage, Leonard Harrison Campground provides a friendly, well-maintained haven from which to launch your exploration into the depths of Tioga State Forest and the stunning Pine Creek Valley.
Leonard Harrison Campground is situated within Leonard Harrison State Park at the provided address: Leonard Harrison Campground, Wellsboro, PA 16901, USA. Its remote, elevated location is a key part of its appeal, offering a coveted "bird’s-eye view" over 800 feet down to the Pine Creek flowing at the bottom of the gorge.
Accessibility to the park is primarily via Route 660, traveling west from the charming nearby town of Wellsboro. While the drive is scenic and winds its way up to the rim, it is the recommended and safest route. Wellsboro, located approximately 10 miles away, provides all the necessary provisions, quaint dining, and the famous gas lamppost-lined Main Street, making for an enjoyable day trip to stock up on essentials or simply to sightsee.
The campground's excellent internal accessibility means that every site is ideally situated for the best experience. As a recent guest mentioned, "All the sites were within a couple hundred feet of drinking water and the farthest walk to the bathroom was no more than 2 minutes." Furthermore, the park's main attractions—the Visitor Center, scenic overlooks, and the trailhead for the famous Turkey Path—are just a short walk from the campground loop, often just across the main parking lot. It is this proximity to the canyon's edge that truly sets the location apart, giving Pennsylvania locals instant access to world-class scenery.
It is important for local users to note the limited digital connectivity in this beautiful, remote area. While the nature is restorative, cell phone coverage is minimal (as described in one review: "verizon and tmobil 1 bar max"). Campers are strongly advised to download maps, trail information, and any necessary content before arriving, allowing them to fully disconnect and immerse themselves in the experience.
The state park provides modern, reliable services and amenities designed to keep campers comfortable while maintaining a focus on the natural environment. The campground is seasonally operated, typically open from the second Friday in April through the third Sunday in October.

Beautiful campsite right at the Grand Canyon of The East. The bathrooms and showers were super clean. All the sites were within a couple hundred feet of drinking water and the farthest walk to the bathroom was no more than 2 minutes. The sites came with a picnic table, a file ring with a grill, a trash bag hook, and a gravel lot you can drive and park a car in. Additional parking also in the lot. Bathroom and showers were super clean. They had a sink basin for dishes. The state park and hikes a a short walk away with beautiful views of the mountains, creeks to swim in and waterfalls. Rangers were really nice and helpful and they did rounds at night.
Aug 09, 2024 · George DiwanCell phone coverage for verizon and tmobil 1 bar max, but campground beautiful.
Jun 02, 2025 · Jack DanielBeautiful, clean campground with some nice private electric hookup spots. Heated bathhouse! Direct access to PA Grand Canyon overlook and hiking.
Dec 04, 2023 · Lisa QuintingEveryone there was friendly so that's always a plus! Rangers were pleasant and happy to answer any questions we had. The campsites are a little on the small side and can have lot of rocks in some areas, so if you're planning to camp with a tent bring a hammer! Rangers do make rotations all night which is reassuring, but if you're a light sleeper bring earplugs. They do have restrooms that are kept CLEAN, and provide a shower for you as well. You can bring your animals but training on grounds is discouraged.
