Little Paint Campground is situated at Donahue Rd, Harpers Ferry, IA 52146, USA. This address places it squarely within the picturesque Yellow River State Forest, a significant natural landmark in Allamakee County, Northeast Iowa. The campground’s location within the Yellow River State Forest is a major draw for outdoor enthusiasts. The forest offers a diverse landscape of rugged terrain, rock outcrops, bluffs, and steep slopes, carved by the Yellow River and Paint Creek. Accessing the campground typically involves navigating forest roads, which adds to the feeling of getting away from it all. While the beauty of the drive from places like Northern Minnesota is often noted, it's wise to be aware that some roads leading to the campground, such as Donahue Road, might be unpaved or less developed. Always check the best route, as some GPS systems might lead you down Level B roads not ideal for all vehicles.
For Iowans heading to Little Paint, the primary entrance to Yellow River State Forest is typically found on Highway 76. It's approximately 15 miles north of Marquette or 10 miles south of Waukon. Look for "State Forest Road" or B25. An alternative entrance is located west of Harpers Ferry, about 2 miles from town on county road X42, again looking for State Forest Road or B25. The journey itself becomes part of the adventure, leading you deeper into the tranquil heart of Iowa's driftless area.

For us Iowans, Little Paint Campground offers an authentic and accessible slice of the wild right in our backyard. We understand and appreciate the nuances of a true outdoor experience, and Little Paint delivers precisely that. It’s not about flashy amenities; it’s about the tangible connection to nature that defines so much of our state’s appeal. Its primitive nature, while a point of awareness for some, is precisely why many locals are drawn to it. It encourages us to truly disconnect, to listen to the sounds of the stream, and to gaze at the unmarred night sky – experiences that are increasingly hard to find.
The campground's location within the Yellow River State Forest is a significant advantage. This vast forest is a cherished natural resource for Iowans, offering unparalleled opportunities for hiking, trout fishing in stocked streams, and simply immersing ourselves in our unique driftless landscape. Having a base camp like Little Paint, right in the heart of this natural playground, makes it incredibly convenient for weekend excursions or longer, more contemplative stays.
While some feedback mentions limited privacy in certain sections, this is a characteristic often found in beloved, established campgrounds that prioritize access to natural features. For many Iowans, the trade-off of being close to fellow outdoor enthusiasts, particularly those sharing a love for fishing or hiking, is often a welcome aspect of the communal camping experience. The "friendly" interactions and the helpfulness of the camp host, frequently highlighted in reviews, reinforce that sense of community.
Ultimately, Little Paint Campground caters to the Iowa spirit of self-reliance and a deep appreciation for our state's natural heritage. It's a place to escape the everyday, to refresh your spirit by a babbling trout stream, and to explore the rugged beauty of our forests. It’s a reminder of why we love living in a state with such diverse and accessible natural wonders, making it a perfect destination for any Iowan seeking a genuine outdoor adventure.
Customer Reviews
Please be aware if you are camping here that there is VERY little privacy, especially in the back section. We had lot 86 and it was an open field with spots right next to each other all around us. Also there is like zero direct sunshine down there since it's in a valley. Very pretty drive to get there from Northern MN but definitely would not have made the trip had we known about the campsite distances. We had high hopes when we looked at the google images and reviews. Just wanted to leave an honest review for other people to make a decision on.
Best campground I’ve ever seen. It is so breathtakingly beautiful with a little stream running through it. Camp host went above and beyond for me and great deal on firewood. Will be back for a longer stay.
This campground is laid out very nicely, and not packed together. There is never a camp site right behind you, and the campground is broken up into three sections. The pit toilets are clean and well-vented. There are great trails leading right from the campground, and easy access to Paint Creek in multiple spots. Nice fire pits with grilling racks, and well-groomed grounds.
This campground is good. It has a stream that runs right next to the campground. The stream is stocked with rainbow trout.
Great campground. Huge sites. Awesome trails. Stocked trout stream. Very scenic. Not even 1/4 capacity on a Saturday night. Highly recommend!
