For locals, its geographical setting is a significant advantage, offering stunning waterfront access and a gateway to the iconic Apostle Islands National Lakeshore.
Accessibility to the campground is straightforward, located right off State Highway 13, the main scenic route that traverses the Lake Superior coastline in this area. This means easy driving access for campers coming from various parts of Wisconsin, whether from Milwaukee, Madison, Green Bay, or closer northern cities. The campground's convenience is further amplified by its proximity to key attractions:
- Sea Caves: Reviewers note its "nice location, not too far from the sea caves," making it an excellent base for exploring these natural wonders by kayak or boat.
- Bayfield/Orchards: It's also "not too far from Bayfield/orchards," allowing easy trips into the quaint town for supplies, dining, shopping, or visiting the famous apple orchards in season.
- Apostle Islands Visitor Center: A significant advantage is having the "Apostle Islands visitor center right down the road." This provides immediate access to park information, ranger programs, and assistance for planning island excursions.
- Big Bay Town Park: While not explicitly mentioned in the reviews, the campground is adjacent to Big Bay Town Park, which features a beautiful beach, offering extended recreational opportunities.
This combination of lakeside access, easy driving, and immediate proximity to major natural attractions and community resources makes Little Sand Bay Campground an exceptionally convenient and appealing choice for Wisconsin residents looking for a rich Lake Superior experience.

As Little Sand Bay Campground is managed by the National Park Service (NPS) as part of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore (or a related entity providing facilities for park visitors), it typically operates under a standardized fee structure rather than traditional "promotions or special offers" common at private campgrounds. The "offer" here is the exceptional access to a protected natural resource with basic amenities.
- Standardized Fees: Camping fees are generally set by the NPS or its partners and are consistent across the season, though they may vary by site type (e.g., electric vs. non-electric).
- National Park Passes: For Wisconsin residents who hold a National Park Pass (such as an America the Beautiful pass), this typically covers entrance fees to national parks, but not usually camping fees. However, it provides value for accessing the broader park area.
- Off-Season Value: As noted in a review, visiting during "mid-May" (shoulder season) can offer a "perfect" and "mostly empty" experience, providing a quieter atmosphere without a promotional price reduction. This inherent value in solitude can be considered a "special offer" for those who prefer less crowded environments.
To learn about current fees, reservation windows, and any specific policies, Wisconsin locals should directly visit the official Apostle Islands National Lakeshore website (nps.gov/apis) or Recreation.gov. These are the primary sources for booking campsites within national park units. It is always recommended to check these sites well in advance, especially for popular seasons, as sites can fill up quickly.

Customer Reviews
Good camping experience. Sites are very close, like KOA close. But mid May it was mostly empty and perfect for me.
Nice location, not too far from the sea caves, and not to far from Bayfield/orchards. Electric, nice big beach area, Apostle Islands visitor center right down the road. The toilets area was really nice (as it seems to be part of the NP) but showers house area was gross. $2 for a 4 min shower dingy and full of cobwebs & spiders (it was hot water tho!). So everything was great minus the showers which need a good clean if not an update.
It's a beautiful little beach. Most people stay there to kayak out to the Apostle Islands or do some form of boating. It has a protected breakwater to dock. The campsites are very close together and do not have any privacy. Most sites have a view of the lake but not the tent camp area.
My wife and I camped there for 3 nights very early in the season. (5/15/24) Bring warm clothing if you venture out early, it gets cold here at night. At that time it was very quiet, only other campers there were a few fisherman. There was no showers, only pit toilets were open, and no camp Host. My wife and I loved the quiet solitude. At that time of the year, don't plan on doing anything but relaxing in your site or at the beautiful nearby beach. Nothing else is open, including the nearby visitor center. Fortunately the weather was as good as it gets there at the time we visited and were able to enjoy the nature of the area.
We stopped to take some pictures of Sand Island, and let our dogs blow off some steam, before our 2 hour car trip home. I loved the beach area, though I was surprised to see that there are almost no rocks, here. I guess it has something to do with the geography of the área? Anyway, it's perfect, if you're just looking for a nice, sandy beach to enjoy. It has a nice shelter area, a really sweet playground, for kids, and hiking trails. There were a lot of kayakers there, so I am assuming this is a popular spot for such activities. Most of the surrounding area was campground. Spots are available for tents, and trailers, and there are plenty of resorts with cabins, if that's more your speed.
