Introduction / Overview
For New Hampshire residents seeking an authentic, often-secluded camping experience nestled within the quieter, southern reaches of the White Mountain National Forest, Mead Explorer Base Camp in Sandwich is a cherished secret. This historic property, formerly known as the Daniel Webster Council Boy Scouts of America Mead Wilderness Base Camp, carries a rich legacy of introducing young people to the wilderness, a tradition that continues today for all who visit.
Mead Explorer Base Camp is not a large, bustling commercial campground; it is a small, intentional space that functions primarily as a launchpad for deep forest exploration. As local visitors attest, it is "Easily one of the best campgrounds in the White Mountain National Forest" due to its "off the beaten path" nature, which often leaves it "almost empty, even on summer weekends." The facility itself is small, offering a limited number of designated campsites, including both small group sites (up to 8 campers) and a large group site (up to 30 campers). This size limit ensures the area remains peaceful.
The experience here is focused on immersion in nature and direct access to some of the area's best trails, including a "short hike away from a beautiful waterfall." With basic, useful amenities provided, Mead Base appeals to hikers, quiet campers, and locals who appreciate its low-key atmosphere and historical significance.
Location and Accessibility
Mead Explorer Base Camp is strategically located on Diamond Ledge Rd in Sandwich, NH 03227, USA. This places it in the beautiful southern region of the White Mountain National Forest, near the charming town of Sandwich.
The base camp's location makes it a premier trailhead. It is a launching point for several key hiking routes, including the Wentworth Trail up Mount Israel (2,630 ft.), the Bear Camp River Trail, and the hike to scenic Cow Cave and Beede Falls. Its setting is deep within the forest, offering immediate access to trailheads and historic walking paths that begin right on the grounds.
Accessibility is generally excellent for vehicles, as the site provides year-round parking for day-trippers and campers. However, its position further from major interstate highways contributes to its secluded feel, requiring a purposeful drive on rural roads to reach. This intentional distance is precisely what keeps the area quieter than campgrounds situated directly on major tourist routes like the Kancamagus Highway.
The Friends of Mead Base Conservation Center, a non-profit organization, maintains the parking area and grounds, ensuring that the base remains accessible and well-cared for as a public resource.

Easily one of the best campgrounds in the White Mountain National Forest. It's a small off the beaten path campground and is often almost empty, even on summer weekends. It's just a short hike away from a beautiful waterfall and other trails also start from here. There are all of the useful amenities here (privies, potable water, firewood, fire rings, picnic tables).
Jul 13, 2023 · Sam ShirleyMy brother went here as a scout many years ago and I visited him and saw it as it is today. Great campgrounds and hiking.
May 20, 2023 · Ron JWe actually did Wentworth trail to Israel trailhead. For Israel Mt. It was a great hike well trafficked and would rate it moderate. Bring proper gear if your winter hiking. I saw some people show up in jeans and sneakers and no spikes. You absolutely need spikes! As well as winter jacket because it's cold and windy at the top. Gloves, hand warmers, winter hat, gators, and face mask. It's winter not the time to be a hero. Come prepared and not just for this one but all hiking especially winter hiking. It's a whole new ball game. Views at the top were great and we had a nice sunny day but was still windy/cold.
Mar 06, 2022 · CharlesI've never seen a campground like this, it's amazing. It's secluded in a little spot of heaven. Three large and well maintained campsites that most people overlook. There is potable water at the house. Privies are well taken care of. Lovely view of the stars at night.
Jul 23, 2022 · Kevin O'ConnorIt's 8:30 on an October night, and my Scouts and I sit by the fire as an owl calls off in the distance. Today, we spent the morning at Beede and Lower Falls and Cow Cave and the afternoon hiking Mount Israel. Though the weather was imperfect, the day was sublime. This is a truly special, historical, place, and, even better, the people who manage it (The Friends of Mead) are exceptional. MEBC is simply a gem—one more reason why NH is the best!
