Introduction / Overview
For New Hampshire residents, the White Mountain National Forest is the crown jewel of our state’s natural beauty—a vast, accessible playground right in our backyard. Tucked conveniently near the southern edge of this expansive forest is the Campton Campground, a large and welcoming facility that serves as an excellent basecamp for exploring the western and central Whites. Managed by the U.S. Forest Service, this campground offers a classic, rustic National Forest camping experience, making it a favorite for families, hikers, and all those looking to disconnect and immerse themselves in the region’s stunning landscape of towering pine and northern hardwoods.
Campton Campground is characterized by its heavily wooded sites, providing a significant amount of natural shade and a sense of forest immersion. With a total of 58 sites, it accommodates a variety of camping preferences, including both tents and RVs (though without utility hookups). Visitors consistently praise the facility for its well-kept grounds and clean, functional facilities. The atmosphere is friendly, often enhanced by knowledgeable campground hosts who are keen to share local insights on the best trails and activities. Whether you’re planning a strenuous hike up Mount Osceola or simply seeking a peaceful weekend by a campfire, Campton Campground offers the perfect blend of accessibility and natural beauty for a genuine New Hampshire outdoor escape.
Location and Accessibility
Campton Campground boasts a strategic location that is difficult to beat for easy access from across New Hampshire and the greater New England area. The campground is located just off New Hampshire Route 49 in Thornton, which is situated in Grafton County. Its proximity to a major transportation artery, Interstate 93, is a significant advantage. Specifically, the campground is only about two miles east of Exit 28 on I-93, following NH Route 49 toward Waterville Valley.
This quick access from the Interstate makes it highly convenient for weekend trips, minimizing long, winding drives on back roads. However, a common observation from campers is that while the access from the main road is easy, some of the internal park roads can be narrow, requiring careful navigation for those pulling larger travel trailers or driving big RVs. The facility is officially located in Thornton, NH 03285, placing it directly within the Pemigewasset Ranger District of the White Mountain National Forest. This puts campers within a short drive of popular recreation areas, including Tripoli Road and the greater Waterville Valley region. While the convenience of being close to the highway means some sites may experience a noticeable but generally light amount of road noise, the thick, wooded setting helps to maintain a sense of seclusion and connection to nature.
Services Offered
While Campton Campground offers a traditional, non-electric camping experience, it provides essential, well-maintained services and facilities to ensure a comfortable stay. These services cater primarily to the needs of tent and RV campers seeking a classic forest experience.
Features / Highlights
Campton Campground's key highlights revolve around its location within the White Mountain National Forest and the natural environment it offers. It's a place designed to facilitate deep engagement with the outdoors.

Conclusion: Why this place is suitable for locals
Campton Campground is perfectly suited for New Hampshire locals who value easy access to premier outdoor recreation without the need for extensive travel planning. As residents, we understand the magnetic draw of the White Mountains, and this campground places us right in the heart of the action. Its location, mere minutes from I-93, means we can transition from our workday to a campsite and have a campfire going in no time, making it an ideal destination for spontaneous weekend getaways or short, refreshing midweek breaks. The campground’s classic Forest Service setting—wooded, clean, and well-managed—provides a genuine retreat into nature, offering the restorative peace of the forest that is essential to the New Hampshire lifestyle.
For local families, the convenience of services like clean showers and the availability of summer nature programs make it an easy choice for introducing children to the joy of camping. Hikers, whether seasoned or beginner, will appreciate its role as a quick base for tackling major local trails like those leading up to Mount Osceola. Furthermore, by choosing a National Forest campground like Campton, locals support the continued maintenance of our public lands, ensuring these resources remain pristine for generations to come. It’s not just a campground; it’s a quick, authentic gateway to the best hiking, fishing, and natural beauty the Granite State has to offer, right here in Thornton.
Solid campground, the sites are nice and wooded with ample privacy between sites, several are handicap accessible sites. Clean, functional bathrooms. It's right off the state highway so you can hear the road noise, it's not loud so never bothered us, but if you're looking for a more immersive nature experience that would be the only drawback in my opinion. Otherwise, this place was great.

The sites have also been cleaned and picnic tables cleaned and fixed. It has a cool little ball field great for kids to play games. Opening May 22nd. Come by and check it out. Tent sites and RV sites. No electricity or water at the sites but many water faucets.

Jul 27, 2025 · Michael LewisWe stayed here for just short of 2 weeks while my husband and son did some hiking on the AT. It was a quiet park even during the holiday weekend. The park has 1 loop for reservations and 1 loop for first come first served customers. Mark the host was wonderful, we visited often with him as we needed quarters for the showers every night. The bathrooms are clean and the access to the showers was wonderful after hiking every day. Thank you so much. Virginia
