For experienced hikers and passionate local New Hampshire adventurers looking to tackle the iconic 4,000-footers of the Presidential Range, the Nauman Tentsite is an essential and highly strategic overnight location. Managed by the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) and located within the vast White Mountain National Forest (WMNF), this backcountry site is not a drive-in campground; it is a dedicated, hike-in facility that serves as a critical resting point for hikers, including those traversing the Appalachian Trail (AT).
Nauman Tentsite is situated adjacent to the AMC’s Mizpah Spring Hut, offering a unique blend of rustic camping combined with the benefits of proximity to a staffed service area during the hut's operating season. It is specifically designed to concentrate camping activity in a designated area, protecting the delicate high-elevation environment while providing necessary amenities. This site offers wooden tent platforms to accommodate 30-40 people and is often the only legal camping option in this stretch of the mountains, due to strict regulations against dispersed camping, especially above the treeline.

For any serious New Hampshire hiker, utilizing Nauman Tentsite is an essential part of experiencing the majesty and challenge of the White Mountains.
I’ve stayed here twice and certainly one of the nicer places to camp in the area. Beautiful views. Limited people and when it’s open Mizpah hut offers a great service area for multi-day hikers. Grab a tent site early if you can, though they tend to make room when needed.
Sep 20, 2020 · Alex NEFFIt was nice to be near Mizpah Hut, and we got one of the better tent platforms, but the bear boxes were dirty, the place to wash your dishes were dirty, and the outhouse was just discusting. Caretaker does not take pride in taking care of the place, and squeezing as many people as you can on a tent platform as you possibly can, is just not fun at all!
Nov 19, 2021 · niKols VidenWe stayed at Nauman tent site on the 4th night of our trip through the white Mountains. The tent sites are located very close to the Hut and fresh water. The tent site had it's own caretaker who was kind and helpful. Only reason I have 4 stars is because a storm recently destroyed a lot of trees in the tent site area and they are still in the process of cleaning iit up. The lack of trees and proximity to the hut kind of took away a little privacy. I would still recommend stayting here.
Jun 26, 2018 · Joseph SubasicGreat location, near some great spots just a short hike away. Kind of loud though with the hut so nearby
Oct 23, 2017 · Nick MoloneyHad the dump to myself, very peaceful. And the privy is more than adequate.
