For Massachusetts residents seeking a genuine outdoor experience without venturing far from the cultural heart of the Berkshires, the October Mountain State Forest Campground offers an outstanding and authentic retreat. Encompassing a vast 16,500 to 17,000 acres, October Mountain is proudly recognized as the largest state forest in Massachusetts. Managed by the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR), this expansive natural area provides a robust setting for both relaxation and adventure, making it a prime destination for local campers, hikers, and outdoor enthusiasts.
The campground itself, nestled on a sunny hillside within this massive state forest, offers a tiered layout comprising 44 designated campsites and three rustic yet comfortable yurts. It serves as an ideal basecamp for exploring the natural wonders of Western Massachusetts and accessing the famed cultural attractions of the region. Visitors consistently praise the campground for its peaceful and quiet atmosphere, a quality often maintained by the official no-alcohol policy across Massachusetts state parks. The natural beauty is immediate and compelling; from towering pines to varied terrain, the environment is rich with wildlife and scenic vistas, providing a true escape from the bustle of urban life.
Whether you are looking for a weekend spot to pitch a tent, a place to park your RV or trailer (note: no hookups are available), or a unique stay in one of the popular yurts (not pet-friendly), October Mountain State Forest Campground is a reliable and well-maintained option. Many sites offer shelter and a degree of privacy afforded by the surrounding vegetation, allowing for an intimate connection with nature. It is important to note that all camping is by reservation only; walk-in camping is strictly prohibited.
October Mountain State Forest Campground is conveniently situated in the town of Lee, Massachusetts, placing it strategically in the Central Berkshires. This location makes it remarkably accessible for locals across the Commonwealth and provides exceptional proximity to major regional points of interest.
The official address for the campground is 256 Woodland Rd, Lee, MA 01238, USA. This area is known for its rolling hills and rugged beauty, a characteristic that extends to the campground’s access roads. Visitors should be advised, as noted by local reviews, that the roads within the forest and leading to some trailheads can be rough, rocky, and uneven, making a vehicle with 4-wheel drive potentially helpful, though not strictly required for campground access.
One of the most significant draws of the campground’s location is its superb proximity to cultural landmarks. The world-renowned Tanglewood, the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, is a mere 10 to 15-minute drive away, making this campground a highly convenient and reasonably priced lodging option for concertgoers. Additionally, the site is just minutes from the Mass Turnpike (I-90) Exit 2, providing simple highway access for travelers coming from all directions. The expansive forest is traversed by the famed Appalachian Trail (AT), offering direct access for serious hikers and casual walkers alike.
The DCR management team at October Mountain State Forest Campground is frequently praised by visitors for providing friendly service and maintaining clean, functional facilities. The amenities are designed to support a comfortable camping experience while retaining a focus on the natural environment.
The defining characteristic of October Mountain is its sheer size and the vast array of recreational opportunities it affords. As the largest state forest in Massachusetts, it offers a playground for nearly every type of outdoor pursuit, available year-round.

Camped here July 19 for visit to Tanglewood. Based on my 1 day, I definitely recommend. We were at site 28. In that section, sites were very close together and rocky so bring an air mattress. Despite almost the whole campground occupied, there was peace and quiet. There is a no booze policy which probably helps. Wood is for sale at the campground, priced reasonably. Friendly helpful staff. The bathrooms were very clean, one shower stall in the ladies facility near us. Also has a very nice dishwashing station with hand spray attachment; fancy. I never heard the electrical substation noise mentioned in other reviews, however around 9am the Mass Hells Angels were convening at their nearby clubhouse. Which everyone heard. The campground is about a 15 minute drive to Tanglewood, very convenient. We drove into the state forest and hiked the Mt Washington “lake” loop. About 4 miles, lovely walk on well-maintained trail. If the site were level, and grassy instead of gravel it would be 5 stars. Site 25 looked nice, grassy, flat.
Jul 22, 2024 · Julie RepassSome beautiful sites, including Felton Pond. Roads are rather rough, 4-wheel drive helpful. Ratings of trails don't necessarily reflect actual difficulty. We hiked a trail marked easy and found ourselves watching the group about 50% of the time for roots and rocks. Additionally a phone app showed the trail the equivalent of climbing 11 flights of stairs
Oct 26, 2024 · Sandy MillerStayed here for 2 nights, we enjoyed our visit. Quiet and peaceful, the ledge trail was a pleasant surprise, a bit more strenuous than expected.
Jul 06, 2025 · Stephen TruskaTwo adults and five children stayed on two tent sites within walking distance of the bathrooms. We never heard the hum of the electric station and had a wonderful time. The facilities were kept in great shape. I really appreciated the clean bathrooms and the ability to wash dishes in the dishwashing sink. The campsites were gorgeous and well laid out. The hiking trails were wonderful. We drove to a nearby Lee sandy beach at Laurel lake for access to that beautiful swimming beach with the dock. It was just wonderful. Yurt update: 1 adult and 5 kids stayed in yurt 2. Multiple rain storms with no leaks. Plenty of room for gear. It was really nice not worrying about rain filled tents and I was able to pack and set up less. More time for fun.
Jul 03, 2019 · Mia McDonaldLess that 30 minutes from the Ashuwillticook Rail Trail, the October Mountain campground is a 44 site campground with accommodations for tents, varying size campers/RVs and even 3 yurts. There are two bath houses in close proximity to both the upper and lower section each with a shower. There is no electricar or water/sewer onsite hookups, but does have a dump station.
