For many of us in Wisconsin, finding the ideal campground that combines outdoor adventure with family-friendly amenities can make all the difference in a memorable vacation. Red Barn Campground in Shell Lake, WI, is a destination that has recently undergone significant transformations, aiming to become a premier spot in the Northwoods. Under new ownership, this campground is striving to provide a revamped experience, offering a blend of natural beauty, engaging activities, and a comfortable stay for campers of all kinds. While transitions can come with their challenges, the vision and investment being poured into Red Barn Campground suggest a bright future for this Wisconsin gem.
Recent reviews for Red Barn Campground present a mixed picture, reflecting the ongoing transition under new ownership. One review expresses significant disappointment, citing that "The campground is nothing like the website and the staff were completely dishonest about the status of construction." This guest highlights frustration with a "swimming pond" being a "construction zone" despite assurances it would be ready. Issues with unmarked sites, lack of a clear office, un-mowed sites, and low stock of local trail maps and firewood also contributed to a negative experience, leading them to conclude, "Don't waste your time or money." However, amidst these concerns, the "clean bathrooms" and the flexibility to "change sites for our group to be closer" were noted as positives.
In stark contrast, another review hails Red Barn Campground as a "Hidden gem of a campground" and an "Amazing family destination." This reviewer enthusiastically praises the "brand new water park and beach area" as "super fun!" They highlight a wide array of activities, including an "ice cream parlor and wagon rides through the country," as well as "chickens and goats for kids to pet." The appeal extends to adults with "event/social spaces" and direct connectivity to "100s of miles of atv trails." Mini golf is also mentioned as a fun activity. This guest, returning for their "3rd year," affirms that "new owners have updated many things and really invested a lot to make it a great campground," indicating a strong positive trajectory under the current management. This dichotomy suggests that while some areas are still under development and communication around construction might be improved, significant investments are indeed being made, and many guests are thoroughly enjoying the new additions and overall experience.

Very disappointed and will not be coming back. The campground is nothing like the website and the staff were completely dishonest about the status of construction. We booked a site by the swimming pond excited for the beach. It is nothing but a construction zone. When we asked about the pond, we were told it was going "to be ready tomorrow, it just needs rocks." Bold to tell us that lie. Even more irritating that no work was continued to get the pond ready for summer during our stay. I should also mention that another gentleman left a review 3 weeks ago and they replied saying the swimming pond will be ready in a week (2 weeks before our stay). Very confusing getting around the campground. The office is not labeled and neither are any of the sites. Sites were not mowed upon arrival. We went to the office to get a map of local ATV trails but they "ran out last weekend." Low stock of wood and $7/small bundle. Only positives were the clean bathrooms and that they allowed us to change sites for our group to be closer. Don't waste your time or money.
Jun 16, 2024 · Melanie DionHidden gem of a campground. Amazing family destination. Things to do in any weather- brand new water park and beach area were super fun! Ice cream parlor and wagon rides through the country is a nice touch, as well as chickens and goats for kids to pet. Fun for adults too with event/social spaces and campground is connected to 100s of miles of atv trails. Mini golf was fun as well. Only about a mile from Shell Lake beach, many options to camp or go into town to restaurants. This was our 3rd year coming here and it was the best time yet, new owners have updated many things and really invested a lot to make it a great campground.
Aug 27, 2024 · b hOriginally I thought the website had a lot of great things to say about the campground! Great photos and what looked like great activities for kids. How anyone gives this place more than a 1 or 2 star is surprising. I looked on their website on what time we could check in to the cabin we rented which I could not find. I sent them an email and called them and no one responded to me. We decided to show up at 2 and when we got here even the worker did not know what time cabin check in was. We reserved cabin B and it ended up not existing and she sent us to cabin D. When we went to D the people were still there and not packed up. We ended up finding out checkout was 11AM and they still would not leave. Ended up being the owners family at our reserved cabin and we had to wait for about an hour before they would leave. It wasn’t u til 5PM that I got an email from the manager that we could check in at 3, but this did us no Good since it was after we had arrived. The icecream here that they serve is old and over frozen and over priced. The firewood was also insanely priced at 9$!!! The playground had broken swings and everything looked like they were from the 70-s or so and unkept. The manager was rude and would smoke next to people’s kids and was not friendly. The barn with “crafts and activities” is so run down i don’t know why people use this place. I was very disappointed with the establishment and staff. While we were here we heard several other people voice their frustrations about how close everyone’s sites were together and how hard it was to bring campers into their spots. The bathrooms were also disgusting. The stalls were only 4 feet high with little protection and the urinal was filled with brown old urine that had been there for some time. The bathrooms were not clean and the shower was filthy. I saw other people posting that this place lied in their pictures and they did. They took pictures from other campgrounds pools etc and took them for their own website. The pond is small and NOTHING like the pictures. I have seen a bunch of 1 star reviews thus far and they have all been accurate. Overall not many people enjoyed this place with what I saw. We will not be coming back again.
Jul 21, 2024 · T BWe had such an amazing time bringing the pups and the toddler with us. It is a very nice clean place with clean bathrooms and all the extras. The wagon ride was a ride to remember with all the trails. We will definitely be returning.
Jul 30, 2023 · Nicole AschemanThis place isn't even a shadow of what it was under the Swans (Dottie has since passed). It's fallen into wrack and ruin. The red barn for which it is named is falling down, although they may be trying to save it. The mini golf course is rotting away, the chickens and fresh eggs for purchase are gone, as are the sheep and alpaca pen and pick your own strawberry field. In their place is dirt, as they are packing in as many RV sites as possible, having ripped up the grass where family games used to be held on holidays (3-legged race, water balloon toss, etc.) and cut down most of the trees. It looks like a strip mining operation had taken up residence. In their place are garden sheds that they're pawning off as "cabins". Looking for a place to spend the weekend? Forget it. They don't want you. They're pushing for catering solely toward seasonal campers who will rent a site for $2,500/year where they're jammed very close to the neighbors. Snore and you'll wake them up. The very small handful of open sites are right on the highway with no shade to be had. We haven't been here in 13 years, and after this most recent experience, we won't ever be back.
