The campground's location on Big Cove Road is a significant advantage. This direct access to the river provides a beautiful backdrop and opportunities for fishing, wading, or simply enjoying the tranquil sounds of flowing water. While some parts of Big Cove Road can experience limited cell phone signal, it's a common characteristic of mountainous areas, encouraging a true digital detox for campers. Some older reviews mention issues with cellular service, but this can vary by provider and recent infrastructure improvements.
For North Carolina residents, reaching River Valley Campground is relatively straightforward. Cherokee, NC, serves as the nearest town and a hub of cultural and recreational activities. The campground's proximity to the Blue Ridge Parkway also offers endless opportunities for scenic drives and exploration.
While the campground itself is nestled in a valley, providing a serene environment, it remains easily accessible for both tents and various types of campers and RVs. - Camper/RV Sites: The campground accommodates campers and RVs, offering full hookups (water, sewer, and electric, with 30 or 50 amp service available). Some RV sites are concrete pads, and pull-thru sites are available, indicating suitability for various rig sizes.
- Riverfront Sites: A key service is the provision of coveted campsites directly on the river, allowing guests to fully immerse themselves in the riverside experience.
- Clean Bathhouses: Reviews consistently praise the cleanliness of the bathrooms and showers, which is a crucial amenity for all campers.
- Laundromat: An indoor laundry room with automatic washers and dryers is available, offering convenience for longer stays or cleaning up after outdoor activities.
- Game Room: The campground features a small game room, providing an indoor entertainment option for guests.
- Cable TV: Cable TV access is available at sites, allowing campers to stay connected to entertainment.
- Wi-Fi Access: While some older reviews mention challenges with cell signal, modern campgrounds typically offer Wi-Fi to compensate, and some reviews mention excellent Wi-Fi connection.
- Camp Store: A well-stocked camp store is available on-site for purchasing essentials and souvenirs.
- Fire Rings and Picnic Tables: Sites typically include fire rings and picnic tables, essential for outdoor cooking and gathering.
- Pet-Friendly: While not explicitly detailed in all provided reviews, many campgrounds of this nature are pet-friendly, allowing guests to bring their furry companions. Always confirm specific pet policies.
- Long-Term Rentals: Recent information suggests that the campground may primarily focus on long-term rentals, with limited or no overnight camping, so prospective short-term visitors should verify current policies.
These services aim to provide a blend of rustic charm with necessary modern conveniences, focusing on the core camping experience.
- Stunning Riverfront Access: The most prominent feature is the campground's beautiful location directly next to a "nice river" (the Oconaluftee River). Getting a campsite on the "riverside" is a highlight, as "listening to the river in the middle of the night is a dream," providing a naturally calming and memorable experience.
- Versatile Camping Options: River Valley Campground accommodates both "tent camping" and "campers" (RVs), offering "full hookups" for RVs with gravel, paved, and riverfront options, catering to different camping preferences.

As a long-standing, privately owned campground, River Valley Campground's approach to promotions may differ from larger chains. While explicit, widely advertised "special offers" aren't consistently detailed in the provided public reviews, campgrounds of this nature often provide value through their pricing structure, particularly for extended stays, which aligns with their reported focus on "long term rentals."
Based on typical practices for such establishments and information gathered:
- Extended Stay Benefits: The mention of "long term rentals only" in some recent updates suggests that the campground's primary "promotion" might be competitive rates for weekly, monthly, or seasonal stays. This is a common practice for campgrounds that cater to longer-term visitors, offering a significantly reduced per-night cost compared to transient daily rates. This would be a major benefit for North Carolina residents looking for a seasonal home base in the mountains.
- Cash Only Policy: Some older reviews mention that the campground is "cash only" for reservations (mailed checks for deposits, cash for balance). While this might not be a "promotion," it's a critical operational detail that could influence booking and payment methods. Always verify current payment policies directly.
- No Credit Cards: Older information indicates they might not take credit cards. This is an important consideration for budgeting and payment.
- No Online Reservations: Reservations were historically made over the phone with a mailed check. This suggests a very traditional booking process, implying that any "offers" would be communicated directly via phone.
Given the mixed reviews regarding staff interactions, it is crucial for North Carolina residents interested in potential offers or detailed pricing to call River Valley Campground directly. This direct communication will provide the most accurate and up-to-date information on availability, rates (especially for long-term stays), and any specific policies regarding payment or booking. It is advisable to clarify all terms and conditions during this call.

Customer Reviews
Me and my husband and kids camped here several years ago. Sitting at the dinner table tonight, you know we still talk about how horrible this place was. The location is great- other than there’s not a lot of cell phone signal- definitely talking about what everybody else is talking about on here- Some of the rudest people I think I’ve ever been around! We have since camped at Cherokee camp ground, bradleys and another one down there with a little church on site. All great. Do yourself a favor and drive down the mountain— altitude is messing with these people clearly. I wouldn’t camp there again if it was zero dollars per night!
I absolutely love this campground. Very friendly staff and great locals. I have been going here for family vacations for over 10 years and this campground never disappoints. River Valley Campground is very beautiful and sits right next to a nice river. Allows for tent camping, as well as, campers. If you have a choice try and get a campsite on the river side because listening to the river in the middle of the night is a dream. Highly recommend staying here!!!
I stoped to ask to drive through to evaluate campsites. They allowed it but their expressions were not friendly. Most campsites are owned by yakees. So you get the rude treatment. I always stayed at one up the river. But they are under new ownership. I rode by and noticed there were many vacant sites. Before you had to make reservations a year early. Sad to see such bad management. Regards and safe camping.
We’ve stayed at this campground for three years straight and have enjoyed it every time. Wonderful location and clean camp ground. This last visit was a little disappointing. A employee in a golf cart approached ya multiple times and was extremely rude. We do our best to be polite respectful campers as we have 3 young boys camping with us. But the way this employee handled situations was embarrassing and uncomfortable. I politely brought this to the attention of the lady at the front desk and she immediately defended him and threatened to charge me 5 dollars for staying 2 minutes after 12. Again we have 3 boys under the age of 7. Not always smooth packing up and leaving. I really hope the owner sees this and makes the Necessary changes to fix this. I hate to not want to stay at such a beautiful place in the future because of a couple rude employees.....
Clean, quiet spot. The staff were amazing and helpful. They ran us around in a golf cart to assist us in picking the perfect spot for our 31 foot RV, and treated us with respect our entire stay. We got a spot right next to the river with power and water/sewer, and had a fantastic time. The elk in the area were out by the dozens, so that was a plus. The showers were clean, although small, and the restrooms were clean and well-maintained. We will certainly return our next trip through the Smokies, and definitely recommend River Valley to friends & family.
