Introduction / Overview
For New Yorkers craving an authentic wilderness experience, one destination consistently rises above the rest: the Saranac Lake Islands Campground. Operated by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), this is not your typical drive-up camping facility. It is a premier boat-access-only campground, featuring 87 secluded sites scattered across the islands and shorelines of Lower and Middle Saranac Lakes. The essential requirement—that you must reach your site by water—ensures a peaceful, less-crowded experience that feels genuinely remote, providing the perfect escape from the hustle of city life.
The campground’s central hub is the Registration Booth, located conveniently off State Route 3. This is the mandatory starting point for all campers. It’s where you check in, receive your permit, and transition from terrestrial traveler to maritime adventurer. The overall atmosphere here is one of professional organization combined with the excitement of an impending expedition. As real customers attest, the rewards for making the effort are substantial: one visitor noted it was the “Most peaceful solo experience of my life,” kayaking three miles out to a site on Eagle Island, while another hailed the “quiet and super nice canoe camping spots.” This feedback underscores the campground's unique selling point: privacy, tranquility, and direct access to the breathtaking Saranac Chain of Lakes. Whether you choose a private island site or a secluded shoreline spot, you are guaranteed a waterfront view and the unparalleled quietude of the Adirondack wild.
The Saranac Lakes system is famed for its interconnected waterways, allowing campers to explore Lower, Middle, and eventually Upper Saranac Lakes via a set of locks and portages, making this location an ideal base for extended paddling and boating trips. This commitment to maintaining a primitive, high-quality outdoor experience is why the Saranac Lake Islands Campground is considered a true gem within the Empire State’s park system.

This place is wonderful. I kayaked with my gear about three miles out to Eagle Island and had an amazing cliff view from my campsite. Most peaceful solo experience of my life.
Jul 25, 2025 · Eric PaolettiWhat a gem, quiet and super nice canoe camping spots
Aug 29, 2025 · Jerome KawaNice campground. The lake is beautiful and peaceful. You can bring your own boat or rent from the Saranac Lake Marina. I highly recommend getting a motor boat as most campsites are too far to paddle to in my opinion. It took me 15 minutes to canoe from the marina to our campsite on Eagle Island. The Campground does not have much for facilities. You will have to go somewhere else for a shower if you don’t want to wash in the lake. Meadowbrook campground has some showers and is about 6 miles down the road on the other side of town. Beware of dead trees at the campsites. Almost every birch tree I saw on Eagle Island was dead and one fell on our tent, missing my nephew’s head by a foot.
Aug 14, 2023 · SThis place was amazing! The views of the mountains and lake were unbelievable. Not to mention the sites are spread out so you truly feel like you are in your own space regardless of what site you book. I absolutely recommend if you are an avid fisher or kayaker, and a true outdoorsman/woman.
Sep 23, 2023 · John EppigWe have been staying at different sites on Middle Saranac Lake for 25 years. We canoe camp and like to put in at South Creek. Each site has a fire pit, table and outhouse. Some sites have a lean-too. We stayed at site 87 for six days in August. It rained every day, so we swam every day in the rain.
