Sawmill Road Campground D is situated on Sawmill Rd, McConnelsville, OH 43756, USA, placing it within the bounds of the remarkable Jesse Owens State Park. This location is in Southeastern Ohio, a region characterized by its rolling hills, forests, and reclaimed mining lands that have been transformed into a diverse and ecologically rich landscape. McConnelsville, the nearby village, offers a sense of rural charm and basic services.
Jesse Owens State Park itself is a unique destination, known for its extensive network of trails, fishing opportunities, and vast open spaces. The campground's address on Sawmill Road indicates direct access to the park's interior. While this area is distinctly rural, it is accessible for Ohio residents traveling from various parts of the state. Drives from major metropolitan areas like Columbus, Cincinnati, or Cleveland will involve a few hours, making it suitable for weekend trips or longer vacations for those committed to reaching a more secluded outdoor destination.
The appeal of this location lies in its promise of a genuine escape. It's a place where the sounds of nature prevail, and the night sky is often free from light pollution. The ease of access, while still offering a sense of remoteness, makes Sawmill Road Campground D an attractive option for those seeking a quiet, natural retreat within Ohio. The park's ongoing development, as noted by a reviewer, hints at future enhancements, but for now, it remains a haven for primitive campers.
Sawmill Road Campground D is explicitly described as offering "primitive camping." This means that the services provided are minimalistic, focusing on the basics needed for an authentic outdoor experience. Based on common understanding of primitive campgrounds and the provided reviews, the expected services include:
- Designated Campsites: The campground offers individual sites, primarily suited for tents or small campers. Reviews note that "sites are little small," which is typical for primitive areas where the emphasis is on minimal disturbance and maximizing natural space.
- Well-Maintained Grounds: Despite being primitive, a reviewer mentions the campground is "well maintained," indicating that the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) or park management ensures cleanliness and order within the designated camping areas, including pathways and common spaces.
- No Electric Hook-ups: A key characteristic of primitive camping, explicitly stated in the reviews, is the absence of electric hook-ups at the campsites. Campers need to be self-sufficient regarding power.
- No Water Hook-ups: Similar to electricity, there is no direct water access at individual sites. Campers must bring their own water or utilize communal spigots/pumps if available elsewhere in the park, which is standard for primitive sites.
- Fire Rings: While not explicitly stated, primitive sites typically include a fire ring for campfires, which are essential for cooking and warmth in a basic setting. Campers would need to bring their own firewood or purchase it locally.
- Picnic Tables: Often, even primitive sites will have a basic picnic table for meal preparation and dining.
- Vault Toilets (Likely): Given the primitive nature and lack of water hook-ups, it is highly probable that the campground utilizes vault toilets or composting toilets rather than flush restrooms.
- Seasonal Operation: The campground has a defined operating season, closing on December 21st and reopening on April 1st. This implies that services are only available during these periods.
Despite its primitive nature, Sawmill Road Campground D offers several appealing features and highlights for specific types of campers:
- Quiet and Peaceful Environment: This is a significant highlight, with reviews consistently describing it as a "nice quiet camp ground" and "Quiet at time." This makes it an ideal retreat for those seeking solitude, relaxation, and an escape from noisy environments.
- Access to Jesse Owens State Park: Being within this large state park is a major advantage. The park offers extensive opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, fishing in numerous lakes and ponds, and wildlife viewing. Campers have a vast natural playground at their doorstep.
- Rustic Camping Experience: For purists who prefer a back-to-basics approach to camping, the lack of electric and water hook-ups is a feature, not a drawback. It encourages self-reliance and a deeper connection with the natural environment.
- Well-Maintained Primitive Sites: The mention of being "well maintained" is a highlight for a primitive campground. It suggests that while basic, the sites are clean and cared for, enhancing the comfort of the primitive experience.
- Future Development Plans: While currently primitive, the ongoing process of "upgrading the area with cabins and welcome center" indicates a future vision for the park. This might be a highlight for some who appreciate the current quiet, primitive state knowing there will be enhanced facilities in years to come, without compromising the immediate experience.
- Small, Intimate Sites: The "little small" sites cater to individual tents or small campers, fostering a more intimate camping experience and potentially reducing noise from larger groups or RVs.
State park campgrounds, especially primitive ones like Sawmill Road Campground D, typically do not offer "promotions or special offers" in the commercial sense. Their pricing is usually fixed by the state park system and is often very affordable due to the basic nature of the amenities.

- Be aware of the seasonal closure from December 21st to April 1st, as no services or camping would be available during this period.

Customer Reviews
Nice quiet camp ground, well maintained. This is primitive camping no electric or water. They are in the process of upgrading the area with cabins and welcome center but probably a couple years off yet.
Quiet at time when there sites are little small mostly for tents or small camper closes dec 21 reopens apr 1
Stayed there in June 2018, at the second-last campsite from the end. The area and the site was very nice and secluded, but the site itself was strewn with garbage. Cigarette butts, bottle caps, cans, and general garbage were everywhere, to the point where I had to clean it up before I set up my tent. I'm willing to give site management the benefit of the doubt, since I was there on a Monday, so it's possible that it happened over the weekend and they just hadn't had a chance to get there yet, but a lot of the stuff looked like it had been there a while, so... Even with that, I'd still return. I drove by many other campsites and didn't see a lot of garbage.
Very quiet, nice and clean, good bathrooms.
Beautiful campgrounds, public pit toilets were fairly clean. They have nice fire rings at each camp site as well as picnic table (tables in disrepair) the big complaint we had with campgrounds is that it is overrun night and day with "very aggressive raccoons" !! At one point we had 24 raccoons walking right in searching for food (wich we kept locked away) But during meals they would come within six feet of our picnic table while four grown men tried to run them off made the trip an awful experience !!!
