Location and Accessibility

Shawnee Backpacking Camp 2 is situated in the vast Shawnee State Forest, near West Portsmouth, OH 45663, USA. Often referred to as "Ohio's Little Smokies" due to its rugged terrain and extensive forests, Shawnee State Forest is a significant natural preserve in southern Ohio. This location places Camp 2 deep within a truly wild and undeveloped area, offering a distinct contrast to the more populated regions of the state.

It's crucial to understand that Shawnee Backpacking Camp 2 is a backcountry campsite, meaning it is not accessible by vehicle. Access requires hiking in on designated trails within the Shawnee Backpacking Trail system. This is a key aspect of its appeal for backpackers – the journey to the camp is part of the experience. The trail system, comprising both North and South loops, is well-established, with Camp 2 historically being a part of the older North loop.

Visitors will typically park their vehicles at designated trailheads within Shawnee State Forest and then hike to the camp. The exact distance to Camp 2 will depend on the chosen trailhead and segment of the trail. Maps of the Shawnee Backpacking Trail are essential for navigation and can usually be obtained from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) or relevant state forest offices, either online or in person. Familiarity with trail maps, compass or GPS navigation, and wilderness safety is highly recommended before embarking on a trip to Camp 2.

The remote nature of its location means that cell service can be spotty or non-existent in many areas of Shawnee State Forest, including around Camp 2. This contributes to the feeling of solitude but also emphasizes the importance of proper planning and self-sufficiency. For Ohioans accustomed to urban conveniences, the accessibility of Camp 2 requires a shift in mindset and preparation, promising an experience that truly gets you away from it all.

Camp 2 has always been a favorite of mine. I have camped there many times over the last 50 years. The North loop of the Shawnee Backpacking packing trail was built before the South loop. So I spent a lot of time at both Camp 1 and Camp 2.
