Introduction / Overview
For local Minnesotans with a passion for horseback riding and primitive camping, Shell City Horse Camp offers a unique and authentic outdoor experience. Nestled deep within the vast, beautiful acreage of Huntersville State Forest near Menahga, this specialized campground is intentionally designed to cater to equestrian enthusiasts and their equine companions. It is a true 'horse heaven' for those seeking miles of sandy trails and a serene riverside retreat.
Managed under the guidance of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and often by the same team that oversees nearby Itasca State Park, Shell City Horse Camp provides a blend of necessary basic amenities and genuine wilderness seclusion. The atmosphere is quiet, relaxed, and tailored for self-sufficient campers who prioritize trail riding and communing with nature. It’s a vital hub for accessing the extensive network of designated equestrian trails that wind through the rolling hills and dense woods of the State Forest.
Unlike highly developed RV parks or state park campgrounds, Shell City embraces a primitive, rustic style of camping. This focus ensures the preservation of the forest's character and the quality of the trail system, making it a beloved, low-frills destination for seasoned horse campers from across the region. Visitors will find that the lack of electrical or water hookups is a small trade-off for the peace, solitude, and immediate access to over 24 miles of dedicated riding paths. The camp features a total of 35 sites, with a large majority specifically dedicated to accommodating horse trailers and providing essential equine facilities.

We arrived at about 7 pm on a Tuesday and found we had the whole place to ourselves. Lovely, roofed and gated stalls about 12x12 with dirt floors. There are 3 of those and 5 outdoor corrals that range in size from ~10x10 to maybe 20x20. There are about 3 lines for tying. A nice mounting block with hand rails. Super quiet. Picnic tables and fire rings. A not so smelly single seat vault toilet. A hand water pump. Plenty of room to park and turn our 32 ft trailer. Trails were lovely, sandy, well-marked, and mostly shady. Horses loved wading in the clear, Sandy river. Shell City Horse campground rocks!
Aug 16, 2023 · Clare SeguinBring your own drinking water or get it from the pump at the traditional campground next door. The pump at horse camp takes more effort and the water comes out yellow. Other than that, it's perfect here! Just the basic amenities and it's so nice having corrals at each campsite. The river is beautiful and the trails are very fun!
Jun 25, 2025 · Ashton KulesaThe maps on post should have marked north, south, east and west. When riding in woods you lose the sense of direction. Other wise a very nice place to ride.
Sep 24, 2025 · Cathy MonsonBeautiful single track, two track, and forestry roads wind through the woods and along the river.. Nice access to shallow river crossing. Plenty of space to camp with wood corral and high tie options.
Sep 27, 2021 · Julie KolodjiWas a nice, wooded campground, however the campers tend to spend all night partying, not ideal for a family trip!
