Located near Hastings, this fantastic campground provides a unique blend of primitive charm and essential comforts, making it a beloved choice for locals looking to unplug and reconnect with the outdoors in any season.

What truly sets South Camp Area apart, as consistently highlighted by enthusiastic reviews, is its commitment to providing a top-notch camping experience. Visitors rave about the "fantastic campground" and the "helpful and cheerful staff," underscoring the friendly and accommodating atmosphere that defines this state park. The emphasis on "very clean restrooms" and "well marked hiking trails" speaks volumes about the dedication to guest comfort and outdoor enjoyment.

Afton State Park itself is a unique gem within the Minnesota State Park system, known for its deep ravines, prairie landscapes, and dramatic bluffs overlooking the St. Croix River. South Camp Area specifically embodies the park's commitment to a more natural, less developed camping experience, focusing on hike-in sites and unique yurts. This approach ensures a peaceful environment, even though it's remarkably close to the Twin Cities metro area.

The appeal extends beyond the warmer months, as highlighted by a reviewer who loves the "cool" yurts, "especially during the winter months." The promise of "peaceful solitude" and a "safe cozy feeling" with "plenty of firewood to keep the yurt warm and cozy" paints a vivid picture of a year-round haven. This versatility makes Afton State Park and its South Camp Area a go-to for Minnesotans who embrace all four seasons of outdoor adventure. The consistent praise for the "fantastic" Park Rangers and staff, who keep the park looking beautiful, further solidifies its reputation as a well-managed and cherished natural resource.

For generations, Afton State Park has been a place for Minnesotans to connect with nature, and the South Camp Area continues this tradition, offering a remarkable blend of accessibility, natural beauty, and a truly welcoming environment for all who visit.

Location and Accessibility

South Camp Area is located within the expansive Afton State Park, with its address being generally associated with Hastings, MN 55033, USA. Afton State Park itself is situated on the bluffs of the St. Croix River, south of Afton and north of Hastings, in Washington County.

For Minnesotans, the park's accessibility is a significant advantage. It's remarkably close to the bulk of the Twin Cities metropolitan area, making it a convenient escape for a day trip or an overnight camping adventure without the need for extensive travel. This proximity allows urban dwellers to quickly immerse themselves in nature.

However, it's crucial to note that the South Camp Area is primarily a hike-in campground. This means that while you can drive to the park's main parking lots, you will need to hike a certain distance to reach your campsite. This adds an element of adventure and contributes to the "secluded" and "peaceful solitude" often mentioned by visitors. The hiking trails are well-marked, as noted by reviews, making navigation straightforward once you're on foot. For those booking a yurt, specific parking might be closer, but a short walk with gear is still typically involved. This accessibility model promotes a quieter environment, free from car noise and excessive traffic within the camping areas, ensuring a more authentic outdoor experience.

Services Offered

  • Hike-in Campsites: The South Camp Area offers designated hike-in campsites, meaning campers must walk a certain distance from a parking lot to their site.

Flush toilets and showers are generally available at the main park visitor center or designated comfort stations, but not directly at each remote campsite.
  • Water Access: Potable water spigots are generally available at central locations within the campground or at the park's visitor center. Campers are advised to bring water containers.
  • Picnic Tables & Fire Rings: Each campsite, including yurt sites, typically comes equipped with a picnic table and a fire ring for cooking and campfires.

Promotions or Special Offers

As a Minnesota State Park campground, South Camp Area operates under the standardized fee structure set by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR). Therefore, it generally does not offer individual "promotions or special offers" in the same way a private campground might. The value lies in its affordable state park rates and the quality of the natural experience.

Standard fees apply for different site types (hike-in, yurt). All vehicles entering a Minnesota State Park also require a vehicle permit ($7/day or $35/year).

However, as noted in a review, "the group site is great, and a great deal off season if you need the space." This suggests that booking the group site during the off-peak season could be considered a "special offer" or a cost-effective option for larger parties. Additionally, the Minnesota DNR sometimes offers specific programs like "I Can Camp!" designed for beginners, which provides equipment and instruction for a fixed fee, offering significant value.

For the most accurate and current information on camping fees, vehicle permit requirements, yurt rental rates, and any DNR-sponsored programs that might apply, Minnesotans should always refer to the official Minnesota DNR website or contact the park office directly.

The yurts are cool. Especially during the winter months. During the colder months, there aren’t many people down here. The solitude is really peaceful. And there’s a safe cozy feeling and Afton State Park and the yurts— plenty of firewood to keep the yurt warm and cozy. And, the Park Rangers and the entire staff who work at Afton State Park are really fantastic. Very friendly. Very accommodating. And helpful in so many ways. They keep the park looking beautiful. I’ve been coming to Afton state park my whole life. And it’s never been better.

Heated cabins with excellent insulation...! Perfect for winter camping. 10/10 would recommend. Only one heated family restroom in the visitor center though, if you are not into vault toilets.
