Stone Cliff Campground About
For us West Virginians who truly embrace the "Wild and Wonderful" spirit of our state, Stone Cliff Campground offers an authentic, no-frills outdoor experience. Nestled along the banks of the New River in the heart of the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve, this campground is a testament to the rugged beauty and untamed nature that defines our home. It’s not about luxury amenities or bustling crowds; it’s about simple, primitive camping, the sounds of the river, and direct access to some of the most stunning landscapes West Virginia has to offer. If you’re a local seeking a genuine connection with nature, a quiet escape, and an opportunity for adventure without the usual campground fanfare, Stone Cliff is a gem waiting to be discovered.
Stone Cliff Campground is designed for those who appreciate the raw beauty of the outdoors and are prepared for a more minimalist approach to camping. It offers a chance to disconnect from the digital world and immerse yourself in the natural rhythms of the New River Gorge. Whether you're looking to spend your days hiking scenic trails, fishing in the pristine waters, or simply relaxing by a campfire under a canopy of stars, this campground provides the perfect backdrop. Its focus on primitive tent camping makes it ideal for individuals, families, and groups who enjoy roughing it slightly while still having easy access to the vast recreational opportunities of the surrounding National Park. It truly embodies the adventurous spirit of West Virginia, inviting locals to explore the wild spaces right in their backyard.
Stone Cliff Campground is located along McKendree Rd, Oak Hill, WV 25901, USA. More specifically, it is situated within the majestic New River Gorge National Park and Preserve. This location is renowned for its dramatic landscapes, deep canyons, and, of course, the iconic New River. For West Virginians, finding Stone Cliff Campground often involves navigating scenic, and at times, more remote, park roads.
Access to Stone Cliff Campground typically involves traveling off the main thoroughfares and onto McKendree Road, which runs parallel to the New River. While the address provided indicates "Parking lot," this highlights the nature of the campground being accessed via a dedicated parking area rather than a traditional entrance with a gatehouse. Its position within the National Park means it's relatively close to popular recreation spots and trailheads, making it a convenient base for exploring the diverse offerings of the New River Gorge. However, it's worth noting that while geographically in the Oak Hill area, it feels much more secluded and connected to the wilderness. Connectivity can be limited, as one review states, "I had no Verizon cell service at this location," which can be a highlight for those seeking to truly unplug, but a consideration for others. This balance of being within an accessible region yet feeling truly isolated in nature is a defining characteristic of Stone Cliff Campground, appealing to locals who want to feel deep in the wild without a lengthy journey.
Services Offered:
- Tent Camping Sites: Stone Cliff Campground is primarily designed for tent camping. It offers designated sites suitable for pitching tents directly adjacent to the river.
- Day Use Area: In addition to overnight camping, the site also functions as a day-use area, providing space for picnics and riverside enjoyment during daylight hours.
- Plentiful Parking: The campground features a parking lot described as "plentiful and big enough for any size rig or RV," making it accessible even for larger vehicles, though the actual camping is tent-focused.
- Restrooms: Basic restroom facilities are available. However, a review notes a lack of privacy in the toilets, indicating an open design where "the toilet is open for anyone to see you doing your business." This is an important consideration for privacy-conscious campers.
- No Water Hookups: There is no potable water available at the campground. Campers must bring their own drinking water for their stay.
- No Electric Hookups: The campground does not provide electric hookups, reinforcing its primitive nature.
- No Dump Station: There are no facilities for RV waste disposal.
- No Showers: As expected with a primitive site, showers are not available.
Features / Highlights:
- Riverfront Location: One of the most significant highlights is its direct adjacency to the New River, offering beautiful views and immediate access for fishing, kayaking, and simply enjoying the sounds of the water.
- New River Gorge National Park and Preserve Access: Being located within the boundaries of a National Park means campers have direct access to a vast network of hiking and biking trails, scenic overlooks, and opportunities for whitewater rafting.
- Primitive Camping Experience: Ideal for those seeking a rustic, no-frills camping adventure away from crowded, amenity-rich campgrounds.
- Quiet Atmosphere: Despite being a popular natural area, the campground's primitive nature often contributes to a quieter and more serene camping experience.
- Free Camping: As a National Park Service campground, Stone Cliff is typically free of charge, making it an incredibly accessible and budget-friendly option for outdoor enthusiasts.
- Big Rig Friendly Parking: While camping is tent-focused, the parking area can accommodate larger RVs and rigs, allowing for day use or easier access for tent campers arriving in larger vehicles.
- Opportunities for Disconnection: The reported lack of Verizon cell service (and likely other carriers) makes it an ideal spot for those looking to truly unplug and escape digital distractions.
- Scenic Beauty: The surrounding area boasts classic West Virginia beauty, with lush forests, rugged cliffs, and the powerful New River creating a stunning backdrop.
As a primitive, first-come, first-served campground managed by the National Park Service within the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve, Stone Cliff Campground typically does not offer specific promotions or special offers in the traditional commercial sense. Access to the campground is generally free of charge, and there are no reservation systems in place.

Customer Reviews
The restrooms need a little bit more privacy. The toilet is open for anyone to see you doing your business. Other than that the place is great.
Nice, smaller day use and tent camping area adjacent to the river. No water, electric, dump station or showers. Parking is plentiful and big enough for any size rig or RV. I had no Verizon cell service at this location.
It's a picturesque narrow windy road; be alert and cautious. They were busy clearing recently downed trees from a storm. Hike in sites only. Will take the hiking trail tomorrow. The river is pretty for the evening. A bathroom, trash, picnic tables, fire ring area near campspots. Don't pack up and leave your fires burning!!!! The local testosterones come in the evening for some cantankerous behavior.
One of the best campgrounds I've been to. Sites are close enough to the river and feel far enough away from the parking lot to get the more primitive vibe, without actually needing to carry stuff very far. First come first serve means that the best sites (6, 7) may be claimed, but the others still have great fire pits. Camping on the sand is great, also good trees for hammocks at several sites
Had a great time camping here! Very rustic, just one toilet for men and one for women. The men’s toilet didn’t have any doors on it as a heads up. Very cool at night with River right there and the sound from River while sleeping was great!
