Introduction / Overview
For New Hampshire families and outdoor enthusiasts, Sun Retreats Westward Shores in West Ossipee represents a well-established and expansive destination for lakeside recreation. Located directly on the stunning Northwest shore of Ossipee Lake, the resort offers a comprehensive camping and vacation experience, featuring a wide variety of accommodations from premium RV sites to luxurious waterfront cottages and rustic cabin rentals. This facility operates as a large-scale resort campground, catering to both transient visitors and long-term seasonal campers seeking a summer base in the beautiful Lakes and Mountains region.
Sun Retreats Westward Shores leverages its prime waterfront location to offer a vacation atmosphere rich with aquatic and land-based activities. It is frequently highlighted as one of the best family campgrounds in New Hampshire due to its wide-ranging amenity package, which is designed to keep guests of all ages engaged. The resort is positioned as a gateway to the Mount Washington Valley, providing convenient access to shopping, dining, and natural attractions outside the park's gates. While the resort offers an abundance of features, guests should be aware that the overall experience can be highly dependent on the quality of maintenance and staff interaction, which, as customer feedback indicates, can be inconsistent. The park's ownership has acknowledged that maintaining rules for the "safety and peaceful enjoyment" of all guests sometimes necessitates "tough conversations" from the staff, suggesting a firm approach to park regulations.
Despite occasional reported issues with housekeeping and specific amenities—such as the operational status of a snack bar or the provision of basic utilities like cable—the core value proposition of Sun Retreats Westward Shores remains its phenomenal setting and extensive facilities. The sheer scope of its offerings, from its expansive sandy beaches to the numerous planned activities, makes it a powerful draw for those seeking an all-inclusive family getaway on one of New Hampshire’s largest lakes. Prospective visitors are advised to clarify the current availability and operational status of key amenities and services when booking to ensure their expectations are met.

Conclusion: Why This Place is Suitable for Locals
For New Hampshire residents, especially those living outside the immediate Lakes Region, Sun Retreats Westward Shores offers a convenient, amenity-rich destination for both weekend getaways and extended summer stays. The primary suitability for locals lies in the accessibility of its prime location on Ossipee Lake. Owning an RV or securing a seasonal site here provides a guaranteed, ready-made vacation spot without the commitment or cost of owning a separate lake house. This allows families to immerse themselves in the New Hampshire lifestyle—boating, swimming, fishing, and hiking—with a built-in community and a wealth of activities right at their doorstep.
While customer reviews suggest that the hospitality and cleanliness can occasionally fall short of the advertised premium price, the sheer volume of amenities—especially the expansive lakefront, multiple pools, and extensive sports facilities—still provides significant value for families focused on recreation. Locals know that New Hampshire lakefront property is a rare commodity. Westward Shores gives Granite Staters a direct, fun, and relatively close way to tap into the Ossipee Lake experience, acting as their affordable summer retreat and a perfect base camp for exploring the nearby natural wonders of the White Mountains.

We have been to Westwood Shores many times and this stay we had a blast with friends and family but the staff and cleanliness was awful. Cory at the desk was not friendly at all. Not someone you want to be greeting guest!!! Jackie was GREAT. The cabin was very dirty. I swept up a pile of dog hair, the shower curtain was moldy and red at the bottom, the back room smelled like urine, windows had hand prints and dog saliva on the low windows and doors. The snack shack was not open and has not been open all season, no cable but have TVs in the cabin. When asked about it they were rude "we don't have cable" They did not sell char coal at the store but the grilles are all char coal. NOT WORTH THE MONEY AT ALL! Very expensive for what you get.
Aug 13, 2025 · Jill GrangerUnwelcoming front desk staff with no smiles. We were really looking forward to our annual stay at WWS, but our excitement was short-lived. From the moment we arrived, the front desk staff came across as unfriendly, which made us feel unwelcome. We felt as if we were inconveniencing them. This wasn't the kind of hospitality we expected from a family-friendly resort. A welcoming smile goes a long way. The Managers are more suited to be a correctional officer than resort front desk managers. Our Family and friends have been coming to WWS for years and years. The customer service that we received this past weekend was so disappointing we all left planning never to coming back. The cabins were dirty, smelt like urine. The shower curtain had mildew and a red bottom. the floors had dog fur everywhere, windows had dog slobber all over them. Crumbs in the kitchen draws. The public bathrooms were not clean, The air events were filled with dirt n grime, and the floors looked like they haven't been clean for a while. quite frankly the place was disgusting. No more snack shack. They don't sell charcoal at the store but they only provide you with a charcoal grill. They also do not provide with trash pick up like they have in the past. For the money you pay, it's not worth it. There are better places out there. Response from the owner 16 hours ago Hi Tami, We are disappointed to hear this, and we will certainly follow up on the housekeeping concerns. Our rules and regulations are in place for the safety and peaceful enjoyment of our guests, and they apply to everyone. We understand that nobody enjoys issuing or receiving rule reminders or violation notices, but these communications are a necessary part of maintaining a safe camping environment for everyone to enjoy. These tough conversations may not seem "welcoming" or "friendly," but they are important. We appreciate your feedback, and we wish you all the best wherever you choose to vacation next. The funny part about this response from the owner is, THEY FAILED at communication. They tried to hide from these "tough conversations"
Aug 12, 2025 · tami weirWe have been going to westward shores for over 15 years, and each year seems to progressively get worse. We decided to give it another shot and stayed at the Lake Front cabin. HUGE MISTAKE. Here’s what you get: Cabin - they did not provide any paper towels, the grill was filthy and not cleaned, trash bags non-existent. No cable - managements response to this is they do not offer it anymore, EVEN THOUGH IT IS ADVERTISED No WIFI - seems that their “free WiFi” doesn’t make it over to the area. Lake view - nice lake view but the beach on your site means that everyone staying on the peninsula is also on your site. There was no privacy and you were basically camping with 50 other folks in your backyard. Rules - if you love rules, this is your place. They have rules on top of rules and each year they seem to add more. For the nearly $600 per night I am still trying to figure out exactly what we paid for. Westward Shores continues to show that they could care less about customer service once they have your money. You’re better off staying somewhere else as there are MUCH CHEAPER options to enjoy the lake. If you do choose Westward, save yourself the money and avoid the Lake Front cabins.
Jul 06, 2025 · Emilio DiChiaraFourth year in a row coming to the Bearcamp River cabins. Every year management does something to improve and/or increase prices. This year, the snack shack and ice cream stand was not open due to no staff. The policy is 18+ employees only. Still, coming with friends and being their neighbors for a few days is the nicest way to spend a few lakeside days. If you rent the Seapoint cottage, you get the bonus of having the Dock for your boat. Downside is that it’s only one primary suite. They should have two queen bedrooms. The cabins are nice, a/c and tv, what else could a kid want! Bring charcoal, oil and seasonings! The pools are great, the hot tubs are nice. Golf carts are well maintained. A nice “camping” experience of you like packing up your entire house and being comfy.
Aug 05, 2025 · Julia Lopez DiVincenzoSUPER disappointed with how we are being treated as returning guests here. We are checking in today and have just been told they no longer do trash pickup. We’ve stayed at the NH location 5 years in a row and usually travel with 11 other families for the same weekend every year. This year not only do we need to bring our trash to the dump but you also don’t provide sheets and towels. 🤯 When we booked a year ago all of these services were provided and were included in the price we are paying. Now less services same price and staff who have basically told us to just deal. Awful service.
