Tall Chief Cove Campground is situated on an Unnamed Rd, Sperry, OK 74073, USA. This location places it directly on the eastern side of Skiatook Lake, one of Oklahoma's largest and most popular lakes, known for its clear waters and excellent fishing. Sperry is a small town north of Tulsa, meaning Tall Chief Cove is within a comfortable driving distance for residents of Tulsa and surrounding communities. This accessibility makes it an ideal spot for weekend getaways or longer vacations, allowing campers to easily reach their destination and quickly begin enjoying the natural beauty of the area. While the exact access road might be "Unnamed" on general maps, well-maintained signage typically guides visitors directly to the campground entrance once they are in the vicinity of Sperry and Skiatook Lake. Its lakeside setting is a primary draw, offering stunning views and direct access to water-based recreational activities, enhancing the overall camping experience for Oklahomans looking for a close-to-home escape.
Tall Chief Cove Campground offers a variety of services and facilities designed to enhance the camping experience for both RV and tent campers. As a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers managed campground, it generally adheres to a standard of maintenance and provision of essential amenities.
-
Campsite Types: The campground primarily offers individual campsites, many of which are designated as electric-only sites. However, it's worth noting that some sites listed as "electric only" have been observed by campers to also have water spigots available nearby or directly on the site, which is a convenient bonus. There are also sites available for tent camping.
-
Electric Hookups: Many sites are equipped with 30-amp and potentially 50-amp electric hookups, catering to a range of RVs and trailers.
-
Water Access: While not all sites have direct water hookups, water spigots are generally available throughout the campground, and some individual sites may unexpectedly have their own.
-
Restroom Facilities: Clean and maintained restrooms with flush toilets are typically available, providing a comfortable alternative to primitive camping.
-
Showers: The campground offers shower facilities, a significant convenience for campers to refresh after a day of outdoor activities.
-
Dump Station: A crucial service for RVers, a dump station is available on the main road leading out of the campground, allowing for convenient disposal of wastewater.
-
Picnic Tables and Fire Rings: Each campsite is typically equipped with a picnic table for outdoor dining and a fire ring for campfires, perfect for cooking or enjoying the ambiance of a crackling fire.
-
Cell Service: Based on camper reviews, cell service (e.g., AT&T and Verizon) is generally adequate for basic communication and even for light work, which is a helpful amenity for those who need to stay connected.
It is always advisable to confirm specific site amenities when making a reservation, as availability can vary.
Tall Chief Cove Campground is distinguished by several features and highlights that contribute to its appeal as a camping destination on Skiatook Lake.
-
Stunning Lake Views: A primary highlight of Tall Chief Cove is its location directly on Skiatook Lake, offering "pretty awesome" views over the water. Many sites are situated right on the waterfront, providing campers with picturesque scenery and direct access to the lake's beauty, especially at sunrise or sunset.
-
Direct Lake Access: The campground's proximity to Skiatook Lake means easy access for boating, fishing, and other water-based recreation. Skiatook Lake is renowned for its clear waters and abundance of fish, making it a popular spot for anglers.
-
Peaceful Natural Setting: Despite being a developed campground, Tall Chief Cove generally offers a tranquil environment, allowing campers to immerse themselves in nature. The presence of wildlife, such as scorpions (as noted by a past camper, suggesting vigilance is needed), highlights the natural, untamed aspect of the surroundings.
-
Spacious Sites: Campers often appreciate the generous size of the campsites, allowing for comfortable setup of tents or RVs and providing a sense of privacy.
-
Beautiful Sunsets: The westward-facing views over Skiatook Lake often result in breathtaking sunsets, providing a memorable backdrop for evening activities.
-
Affordable Rates: An overnight stay at Tall Chief Cove is generally affordable, with reported rates around $24, making it a budget-friendly option for a lakeside getaway.
-

-
Managed by US Army Corps of Engineers: Being managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers typically ensures that the campground adheres to certain operational standards and safety guidelines.
It is important to note that while the campground strives to provide a peaceful environment, occasional issues with noise from other campers can arise, as indicated by one review. Campers are encouraged to utilize proper channels (camp host, local law enforcement) if disturbances occur.
As a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers managed campground, Tall Chief Cove typically offers standard pricing and does not frequently run "promotions" in the commercial sense. The value comes from its consistent and affordable pricing for lakeside camping. The general overnight rate reported by a camper was $24, which is a competitive price for a site with electric hookups and lake access in Oklahoma.
However, certain discounts may be available for specific groups:
-
America the Beautiful - National Parks & Federal Recreational Lands Pass: Holders of these passes (e.g., Senior Pass, Access Pass) may receive discounts on camping fees. It's always advisable to inquire about these possibilities when making a reservation or checking in.
-
Advance Reservations: While not a discount, securing a spot in advance, especially during peak seasons or weekends, is the best "promotion" as it guarantees your desired site and avoids the disappointment of a fully booked campground. Reservations can typically be made through Recreation.gov.
-
Off-Season Opportunities: During the off-season, while facilities might be limited, the campground is often quieter, and securing a prime waterfront spot without a reservation might be easier, as suggested by a camper who arrived at sunset without a booking and found a great spot.
It is always recommended to check the Recreation.gov website or contact the campground directly for the most accurate and up-to-date information on pricing and any applicable discounts.

Customer Reviews
Showed up at sunset without a reservation and snagged a great spot right on the water. Site #17 was listed as electric only with no water, but it had a water spigot right next to the site. No sewer, although there is a dump station on your way out of the campground on the main road. I don't know if we just missed the dumpsters, but we couldn't find any dumpsters and there were no trash cans near the dump station. The views over the lake are pretty awesome. We slept through a crazy lightning storm that reflected off the water. Be careful of scorpions. We were chilling at the picnic table late at night and a scorpion crawled right next to our feet. Cell service (both AT&T and Verizon) was not fast, but it was adequate for getting some work done. Paid $24 for an overnight stay.
Would not recommend. There is a very rowdy and loud group that played music and hollered until 3:00AM. They drove a vehicle through our campsite to unload wood next to their fire. When we asked politely the next day if they could keep it down the next night so we could get our 4 year old grandson to sleep at a reasonable time, they basically let it be known they had no intention to do so. We complained to the camp host, but they just told us to call OHP or Osage County, because those campers are regulars and no matter how many time they ask them to keep it down, they never do. Sad that we live in a world where people just completely disregard those around them and do what they want. I bet their parents are so proud of the way they turned out.
This is a great campground. Plan on reserving ahead for Friday thru Sunday. If it's open Sunday thru Thursday it's often listed as walkup. Other than those days there aren't any first come sites. Plenty of nearby water spickets. This lake has very clear water in most places. Beautiful. Some sites are pretty short. Some are large. Do some research if you have a large camper. Swim beach is closed, maybe until warmer weather. Clean and handicap accessible bathrooms and showers.
I think they need to do more up keep but this is still a great place
We came up for one night and really enjoyed our visit. Really nice area, nice restrooms. There's a good store called Betty's Country Store close by where we got breakfast. We will be coming up again!
