This article will delve into the details of The Matthews Campground, providing a clear and factual overview to help you determine if it's the right fit for your next North Carolina camping adventure. We'll cover its strategic location, the essential services it provides, its unique features, and how you can get in touch to plan your peaceful getaway. For those who value tranquility and direct access for their RVs, The Matthews Campground presents an intriguing option in the heart of our state.

Location and Accessibility

The Matthews Campground boasts an exceptionally convenient location for both local North Carolina residents and those passing through the state. You'll find this peaceful retreat at:

7625 Lake Wheeler Rd, Raleigh, NC 27603, USA

This address places it just minutes from downtown Raleigh, Cary, Garner, and Fuquay-Varina, making it an ideal base for exploring the capital city and its charming suburban towns. One of its most significant accessibility advantages is its proximity to major roadways. The campground is described as being "just one easy turn off Highway 40 - Exit 297," which is the State Farmer's Market Exit. After taking Exit 297, you travel approximately 7 miles south on Lake Wheeler Road, and the campground will be located on your left. This direct access from a major interstate makes arrivals and departures remarkably simple, reducing travel stress and maximizing your time enjoying the peace and quiet. Despite its closeness to urban centers and a major highway, the campground maintains a secluded feel, offering the best of both worlds: convenient access to amenities and a tranquil natural setting.

Services Offered

  • Full Hookups: All campsites are equipped with essential full hookups, including 30/50 amp electrical service, water, and sewer connections. This provides maximum convenience for RV and travel trailer owners.
  • Gravel Pads: Campsites feature graded gravel pads, ensuring a stable and level surface for parking your recreational vehicle.
  • Wi-Fi Access: Internet access is available, allowing campers to stay connected if needed.
  • Self-Contained Vehicle Accommodation Only: It is important to note that The Matthews Campground specifically caters to self-contained RVs and travel trailers. There are no bathhouses or laundry facilities on-site, meaning campers are expected to have their own onboard facilities. Tent camping is not permitted.
  • Weekly and Monthly Rates: The campground offers flexible booking options with weekly and monthly rates available, catering to both short-term stays and longer retreats.

Features / Highlights

  • Peaceful and Secluded Environment: Multiple customer reviews emphasize the quiet and serene atmosphere. It’s described as a place where campers can truly relax away from the hustle and bustle.
  • Abundant Local Wildlife: A significant highlight for nature lovers is the presence of local wildlife, including deer, wild turkeys, squirrels, and a variety of birds, offering a genuine sense of connection with nature.
  • Proximity to Raleigh Attractions: Despite its secluded feel, the campground is remarkably close to popular Raleigh attractions such as Lake Wheeler Park, the State Farmer's Market, and the NC State Fairgrounds, offering convenience for daytime excursions.
  • RV and Travel Trailer Focused: The campground is designed specifically for these types of vehicles, ensuring that the infrastructure and setup are ideal for their needs. This specialized focus contributes to a more consistent experience for RVers.
  • Gravel Pads for Stability: The use of graded gravel pads for all sites provides a solid and level foundation for parking, which is a practical benefit for RV owners.

Promotions or Special Offers

The Matthews Campground operates with clear, consistent pricing for its weekly and monthly stays, which can be seen as an ongoing "special offer" for those seeking extended periods of peaceful camping without the fluctuation of nightly rates.

  • Weekly Rate: $275.00 (includes power, water, sewer, and Wi-Fi)
  • Monthly Rate: $800.00 (includes power, water, sewer, and Wi-Fi)

These transparent, all-inclusive rates offer significant value, particularly for longer stays, as they cover essential utilities like electricity, water, sewer, and Wi-Fi, which can often be extra charges at other campgrounds. While there aren't traditional "seasonal discounts" or "buy-one-night-get-one-free" type promotions, the established weekly and monthly pricing structure is inherently designed to be cost-effective for those looking for a longer-term, comfortable RV spot in the Raleigh area. It's always advisable to confirm these rates and any potential unadvertised specials directly with the campground, as policies can occasionally evolve. However, the current model provides a consistent and predictable cost for your stay.

Conclusion: Why this place is suitable for locals

For North Carolina residents, particularly those in the greater Raleigh area, The Matthews Campground offers a highly suitable and often ideal solution for their RV camping needs. Its primary appeal lies in its unique balance of accessibility and peaceful seclusion. Many locals own RVs or travel trailers as a way to enjoy the state's natural beauty, and this campground provides a convenient base camp without requiring long drives to remote areas.

The fact that it is exclusively designed for self-contained RVs and travel trailers means that the facilities and environment are tailored to the needs of these campers, ensuring full hookups (electricity, water, sewer) and stable gravel pads. This specialization minimizes the typical campground crowds and noise, fostering the truly "peaceful" and "serene" atmosphere that many campers seek. For North Carolinians, the opportunity to escape the daily grind and immerse themselves in nature, complete with deer, wild turkeys, and birds, is invaluable, and The Matthews Campground delivers this experience just a short drive from their homes.

Furthermore, its strategic location on Lake Wheeler Road, just off Highway 40, means that campers can easily access local attractions, dining, and shopping in Raleigh, Cary, Garner, and Fuquay-Varina. This blend of natural tranquility and urban convenience is precisely what makes The Matthews Campground so appealing to the local North Carolina community. It allows residents to enjoy regular, short getaways in their RVs, supporting their love for the outdoors without sacrificing easy access to daily life or city amenities. While recent feedback on communication highlights an area for improvement, the core offering of a quiet, full-service RV spot in such a prime location remains a compelling choice for our local North Carolina RV enthusiasts. It's a genuine local asset for those looking to embrace the RV lifestyle right here in our backyard.

I tried contacting them via text (as their website recommends), after two days of no response, I tried calling. I immediately got a text response stating to contact us via text (which I did again). Then I even tried messaging them through the website and STILL got no response Really???. It's amazing how some people "operate" a business. Hey, here's a suggestion Matthews, If you don't have any campsites or are closed just state that on the website or at least send a text back to the inquiring party stating that you don't' have any camp sites available. FAIL

Great campground and working with Lisa is a breeze. They are very helpful and accommodating. It’s a small campground which means it’s very quiet which we appreciated. If you are looking for lots of activity in the park this is not your campground. It is very close to shopping. It is reasonably priced. We will be back.

Owners are very nice! RV lots are shaded, can not be seen from the road which makes it some what private. Quiet and out in the country yet close to everything. We love it here, hope to return when ever we are in the Raleigh area.
