Thunder River Campground About
Introduction / Overview
Nestled in the picturesque landscape of Haysi, Virginia, Thunder River Campground offers a fantastic escape for anyone looking to immerse themselves in the beauty of the Appalachian Mountains. This isn't just a place to pitch a tent; it's a gateway to adventure and relaxation, perfect for families, thrill-seekers, and those simply yearning for a peaceful retreat. With its prime location along the scenic Russell Fork River, Thunder River Campground provides a unique blend of natural beauty and recreational opportunities.
The campground has undergone a significant transformation from its historical roots as a bustling coal community. Once home to a Clinchfield Coal Company "tipple" and impacted by a flood in 1957, the site has been lovingly revitalized by the Hill family into a welcoming destination for camping and outdoor enthusiasts. This rich history adds a layer of character to your outdoor experience, inviting you to discover a place where nature's tranquility meets a storied past.

Customer Reviews
Very clean restrooms and showers. Very nice campsites. Hosts are very helpful and kind. Only slight issue we had was having more than 1 tent, we ended up getting charged for two sites.
If you are looking to get away from it all you have found the place, pretty much an hour to get anywhere. Perfect if you love nature and like to go exploring or riding side-by-sides. Great rates huge lots and right on the river, plenty of wildlife. Now having said all that you need to be comfortable driving mountain roads there are definitely some curvy twisty roads we have a 45ft coach but my husband is very confident so he handled it well just wanted to give a heads up...
Vicky and family treated me like family, I was riding bike on the trans American route and in need of a place to set up my tent. A local recommended Thunder River campground, beautiful place right next to the river! Super clean bathrooms/Bathhouses, I honestly felt kinda sad leaving. I highly recommend this campground for your bike riding and atv trail needs! Thank you so much!
Great camping spot. Restrooms and showers are extremely clean. They both have fans and have febreezes going on so it smells nice all the time. The Campground also miraculously has wifi which is helpful due to the lack of signal in the area. Hosts were super relaxed and nice.
Hidden gem. Really nice place to come and get away from it all and enjoy sounds of the river and relax. Really convenient to the town of haysi, and spearhead trails for atv adventure. You should definitely give it a try if your looking for a unique adventure.
