Tower Campground About

For South Dakotans, especially those exploring the vibrant city of Sioux Falls or passing through on a larger adventure, finding a reliable and convenient place to camp is often a priority. Tower Campground, located right in Sioux Falls, offers a unique option for RVers and campers seeking a blend of urban accessibility and essential amenities. While some campgrounds prioritize a secluded, wilderness experience, Tower Campground positions itself as a practical and functional basecamp for those who want to be close to city attractions and major transportation routes.

Operating as the only year-round urban campground in Sioux Falls, Tower Campground caters to a diverse range of travelers, from those needing a quick overnight stop to individuals and families on longer journeys, or even those seeking an extended stay. While experiences can vary, as is common with any high-traffic location, the campground aims to provide fundamental services and a comfortable enough environment for its guests. This article will explore the offerings of Tower Campground, providing factual details from public sources and reviews, to help local South Dakotans decide if it's the right fit for their next outdoor excursion or temporary stay in Sioux Falls.

Location and Accessibility

Tower Campground is conveniently located at 4609 W 12th St, Sioux Falls, SD 57106, USA. This address places it within the city limits of Sioux Falls, South Dakota's largest metropolitan area. Its strategic position offers exceptional accessibility, particularly for those traveling by RV or vehicle, as it provides "easy on and off access from Interstate 29." This makes it an ideal stop for travelers crossing the state or heading to various destinations within the region.

Being an urban campground means residents of Tower Campground are just minutes away from a wide array of Sioux Falls attractions and amenities. This includes restaurants, shopping malls, hospitals (such as Sanford USD Medical Center and Avera McKennan Hospital & University Health Center), theaters, golf courses, and the Great Plains Zoo. Historic Downtown Sioux Falls, with its unique shops, art galleries, and dining, and the iconic Falls Park are also easily reachable. The proximity to bike trails offers opportunities for outdoor recreation right within the city. For those needing airport access, Joe Foss Field (FSD) is also nearby. While its location next to the highway means there can be "road noise," as noted by reviews, this is often a trade-off for the unparalleled convenience of being centrally located and having quick access to everything Sioux Falls has to offer. For local South Dakotans, this means less time spent commuting and more time enjoying their stay and exploring the city's offerings.

Services Offered

Tower Campground provides a comprehensive range of services designed to make stays comfortable and convenient for RVers and campers. Their offerings focus on essential amenities that cater to both short-term and extended visits:

  • RV Sites with Full Hookups: The campground features approximately 118 to 120 RV sites, all equipped with full hookups. This includes water, sewer, and electric hookups (30 and 50 amp service), ensuring that RVs of various sizes (up to 60 feet max RV length) have access to necessary utilities.
  • Pull-Thru and Back-In Sites: Both pull-thru and back-in sites are available, accommodating different preferences and ease of parking for various RV sizes. Some premium sites are also offered.
  • Tent Camping: While primarily an RV park, Tower Campground also offers tent sites, catering to traditional campers looking for a spot in Sioux Falls.
  • Restrooms and Showers: The campground provides secure restrooms and showers for guests. Reviews indicate these facilities are generally "clean and well-maintained," though some note them as "a little dated."
  • On-Site Laundry Facilities: For added convenience, a secure on-site laundry facility is available, allowing guests to freshen up their clothes during their stay.
  • Free High-Speed Wireless Internet (Wi-Fi): Complimentary Wi-Fi is provided, enabling guests to stay connected, check emails, or stream content.
  • Free HD Cable TV: Cable TV hookups are available at sites, offering entertainment options for guests.
  • Pet-Friendly: Tower Campground is a pet-friendly establishment, welcoming furry companions (with some restrictions). They even have a designated dog park area for off-leash supervised activity.
  • On-Site Sales: For immediate needs, the office offers items such as firewood, ice, and snacks for sale. Propane exchange is also available.
  • Secure Environment: The facilities, including restrooms and laundry, are noted as "secure."
  • Year-Round Operation: Tower Campground is uniquely the only campground in Sioux Falls open all year round, making it a reliable option regardless of the season.
  • Daily, Weekly, and Monthly Rates: Flexible booking options are available to suit various stay lengths, from overnight to extended periods.
  • Storm Shelter: While not explicitly listed as a service by name, the shower house often doubles as a secure shelter in case of inclement weather, which is a common feature in well-prepared campgrounds.
Features / Highlights

Tower Campground offers several key features and highlights that enhance the overall guest experience, particularly for those seeking a convenient and functional camping stop in Sioux Falls:

  • Urban Accessibility: Its most prominent highlight is its location directly within Sioux Falls and easy access off Interstate 29. This means guests are just minutes away from all the city’s amenities, including dining, shopping, hospitals, entertainment venues, and major attractions like Falls Park and the Great Plains Zoo.
  • Year-Round Operation: As the only campground in Sioux Falls open year-round, Tower Campground offers unparalleled flexibility for travelers, regardless of the season. This is particularly valuable for those traveling during colder months when many other campgrounds are closed.
  • Full Hookup RV Sites: The vast majority of sites offer full hookups (water, sewer, electric), providing maximum convenience for RVers, allowing them to remain self-contained and comfortable.
  • Pet-Friendly with Dog Park: The welcoming stance towards pets, coupled with a dedicated dog park, is a significant highlight for pet owners, making it easier to travel with furry family members.
  • Essential Amenities: The presence of clean and secure restrooms, showers, and on-site laundry facilities are crucial amenities that enhance comfort, especially for those in smaller RVs or tents. Free Wi-Fi and cable TV also add value for staying connected and entertained.
  • Flexible Stay Options: With daily, weekly, and monthly rates, the campground caters to a wide range of travel plans, from quick stopovers to longer-term stays.
  • Variety of Site Types: The availability of both pull-thru and back-in sites, as well as distinct "front" (more like a parking lot) and "rear" (more conventional RV park with shade trees) sections, allows guests to choose a site that best suits their preferences and RV size. Some sites in the back area are noted as having decent spacing and shade trees.
  • Discounts Available: The campground offers discounts for Good Sam members, retired military, and active military personnel, providing added value for these groups.
  • On-Site Sales: The convenience of purchasing firewood, ice, and propane directly at the office eliminates the need for separate trips for these essential camping items.
Promotions or Special Offers

Specific, time-sensitive promotions or special offers for Tower Campground are best confirmed directly with the park. While typical discounts are mentioned, ongoing promotional campaigns might vary. However, based on the information available and common practices for RV parks, potential promotions or offers could include:

  • Affiliation Discounts: Tower Campground is known to offer discounts for members of affiliations such as Good Sam, as well as for retired military and active military personnel. It is always recommended to inquire about these discounts upon booking or check-in.
  • Extended Stay Rates: Given that the campground offers daily, weekly, and monthly rates, it's highly probable that booking for longer durations (e.g., weekly or monthly) would result in a lower average nightly cost compared to single-night stays.
  • Seasonal Offers: While not explicitly advertised, some campgrounds may have seasonal deals, especially during off-peak times or specific events in Sioux Falls. These would need to be confirmed directly with the management.

To get the most accurate and up-to-date information on any current promotions, special packages, or discounts, potential guests should contact Tower Campground directly via phone or visit their official website if available. This ensures you receive the most current pricing and any applicable offers.

Conclusion: Why this place is suitable for locals

Decent place to stay overnight, but a little on the pricey side 71.00 for a gravel back in site. That said, park is 2 sections the front is basically a parking lot with RV sites the rear section is a large conventional RV park. The back area is where we stayed sites are clean and not close together at all. Utilities all worked as they should, site was level gravel.Restrooms and showers are a little dated but clean. There is road noise because you are next to the highway, but if the AC is on you hardly notice. Entry into the park can be a little tricky off the highway.

Worst campground ever. Traveling across country and been to MANY campgrounds. This was the worst we have encountered. Closed at 2:00 on Saturday and closed on Sunday. I booked at 3:00 online on Saturday. Waited for confirmation email , received it at noon , the morning AFTER we left. In it were all the codes we NEEDED the day before. Archaic instructions at office window. They said they had emergency number on window but I didn’t consider it an emergency. Sat out in shade after LONG drive in ankle high grass that looked like hadn’t been mowed this season. Interstate noise was VERY loud , didn’t realize we were that close until we got there and I knew our money was tied up. Also didn’t feel safe , surrounded by “ full timers “ , not campers. Obviously , park is not interested in the well being of traveling campers , just their money. DO NOT RECOMMEND !

Not a bad place to stay. Plenty or room to park and unhook the tow vehicle since site was a back in. Kinda on the noisy side( traffic). Would have liked to have the wi fi password and codes to bathroom doors but all the #s they gave to call were just answering machines. Left messages but never got a call back. Came in after 2 so no one around at the office. Maybe put that in the info packs left at the office door for us or send an email after booking with that info on it.

Very easy in and out. If you come in from the interstate, Circle is way around if you can't make a tight u-turn. Left at the light and go down a few blocks. Google will tell you once you start. Great stop over. Traffic noise but expected on a stay close to the highway and in town. I would stay again.
