While it does not offer modern amenities like individual water or electrical hookups at sites, or showers, it is consistently praised for the cleanliness and maintenance of its basic facilities, including vault toilets. The campsites themselves are "well taken care of" and designed to blend with the natural surroundings. It attracts campers who prioritize a quiet, natural environment and are prepared for a rustic setup, with a strong recommendation for proper food storage due to wildlife. Despite potential challenges from Lake Superior's famously unpredictable weather, the sheer beauty and tranquility of Twelvemile Beach make it a highly sought-after location for Michiganders and others seeking an authentic Upper Peninsula outdoor adventure.
Twelvemile Beach Campground is ideally located within the majestic Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, with its address listed as Grand Marais, MI 49839, USA. This places it approximately 12 miles west of Grand Marais, along the scenic H-58 road, which runs parallel to the Lake Superior shoreline. This remote yet accessible location is a key part of its appeal, offering a sense of seclusion while still being reachable for visitors.
Access to the campground is typically via paved and well-maintained roads leading from Grand Marais. However, visitors should be aware that portions of H-58, particularly those connecting to Munising on the western side of the Lakeshore, can be narrower or unpaved, making approach from the Grand Marais side generally preferred for larger vehicles. Once within the campground, sites are easily accessible, with ample space for tents and various sized RVs, as noted by a camper who shared a photo looking over their tent, suggesting good visibility and spacing.
The campground's most defining locational feature is its direct proximity to Lake Superior. While campsites are not literally on the sand (to protect dunes and privacy), they are set back just enough to offer "stunning" views and very easy access to the beach. The "clear water with a variety of rocks" immediately adjacent to the campsites offers a unique aquatic landscape. This direct connection to the largest Great Lake provides unparalleled opportunities for enjoying sunsets, beachcombing, and listening to the waves. However, campers should be mindful of Lake Superior's unpredictable nature; "If wind or rain is in the forecast I would advise it is not worth it to come out, they close the beaches for dangerous water conditions," indicating that the weather can significantly impact the experience and accessibility of the beach and water activities like kayaking.
Being within Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore also means the campground is perfectly positioned for exploring the vast network of hiking trails, viewing iconic sandstone cliffs, and accessing various points of interest along the shoreline. It truly serves as an immersive basecamp for experiencing the natural wonders of this federally protected area.

Great campground. Bathrooms were kept clean, and there were no showers. Views are stunning during sunsets. We camped on site 27. One photo is looking over our tent. Clear water with a variety of rocks
Jun 02, 2025 · Voodoo majikWhat a Beautiful place! Campsites are well taken care of. Unfortunately the weather was not great when we visited with great winds coming off of Lake Superior. If wind or rain is in the forecast I would advise it is not worth it to come out, they close the beaches for dangerous water conditions. We weren’t able to kayak either. We didn’t have any issues with this but one thing to note is no bear boxes, they recommend keeping food in car.
Jul 12, 2024 · Jordan MarshallBeautiful lakeside camping. (Site 34 woods side of the loop.) Two minute walk to beach. Nice quite sites with lots of space. Beach is amazing for long walks and sunsets. The one negative were the mosquitoes!!!! The beach was fine but in the woods at my site they were heavy. That said what would you expect for first week in June. Just bring good bug protection and you’ll be fine.
Jun 07, 2023 · Brendan BrownTwelve mile beach campground was serenity, blissful just heavenly! So peaceful and quiet. The camp host was incredible and so friendly. The campsite itself was very clean with ample space. The bathrooms were amazingly clean, but at night make sure you take a flash light. Staff clean the bathrooms regularly. We stayed at campsite 2 which was conveniently located right next to the bathroom with a boardwalk leading to it, but still had plenty of privacy. The steps to the beach were just across the street but still had privacy. During the day we went hiking to Ausable light house which was a super nice easy walk. This whole place was incredible.
Jun 22, 2022 · Deborah WilliamsWhat a great place to camp! We arrived on a Wednesday (July 4th) at 10am and there was only 2 spots available which we expected with the high demand of the 34 sites. Over the next couple mornings there was 5 to 10 open sites available each morning. There are post at each site that says when the campers are planning on checking out. The bugs were really bad our first night, but from what I hear is normal during this time of the year, but over night northern winds came in and blew them inland. The weather was amazing 80's and 50s at night. The camp site was great, I really liked the fire pits and how they adjust easily, there was also a picnic table and lantern hook. There is running water but we didn't use it because we brought enough for the 4 days we were there. I would recommend that everyone would stay here, if you don't find a spot then there are several other camp grounds close. If you need firewood there are several local people that sell it within 5 miles of the campsites. And there is a county store 10 or so miles down the road.
