Introduction / Overview
For Mainers and visitors alike looking for the ideal blend of coastal accessibility and refreshing lakeside relaxation, Wassamki Springs Campground in Scarborough, Maine, stands out as a premier destination. Recognized as one of the closest full-service campgrounds to the vibrant city of Portland, this family-owned park provides a convenient and amenity-rich 'home base' for exploring the best of Southern Maine. Situated on a private, 30-acre spring-fed lake with a full mile of sandy beach, Wassamki Springs offers a unique vacation experience that combines the classic joys of camping with modern conveniences and resort-style recreation.
The campground caters primarily to RVs, campers, and seasonal residents, offering a range of sites from spacious, level grass spots perfect for large motorhomes to open or shaded areas for various setups. While it accommodates a variety of camping styles, the reviews suggest that the emphasis is on a comfortable and well-equipped RV experience, making it an excellent choice for those with larger rigs. The atmosphere is friendly and family-focused, featuring great security with personnel always available at the gate. Whether you are looking for an overnight stop before a longer journey, a week-long family vacation, or a seasonal summer retreat, Wassamki Springs provides the essential services and a private waterfront setting that defines a classic Maine getaway.
Visitors appreciate the availability of full hookups, the clean facilities, and the responsive, helpful staff. While the convenient location near the Portland International Jetport can result in occasional overhead plane noise, as noted by a customer, the overwhelming benefit is the ease of access to both the Maine wilderness and major urban/coastal attractions. The ability to pull in a large 40-foot motorhome with a tow vehicle, utilize a Good Sam discount, and be a mere half-hour drive from downtown Portland makes this spot incredibly practical for both local residents planning a 'staycation' and those touring the region.

We needed an overnight place to stay and wassamki was reasonably priced and happy available. Great friendly staff, very helpful. Sites are spacious enough for a large RV. Not very private. There are showers, laundry, a beech, beech front sites, toilets, wood and ice for sale, camp store, and arcade games. Water and electric on each site. Full hookups available. There is overhead plane noise which can interrupt a cool play list. Good place to try with a camper. Not really for a tent.
Sep 14, 2025 · Maria O’CWe have a 40 foot motorhome towing an F150 site I20 - large flat grassy site with no shade There is good security - always a person at the gate to check your pass. The roads were flooded after the heavy rain, but we were good on the grass. Didn't use the facilities or swim in the lake - too cold. 10% Good Sam discount. 30 minutes to Portland - that's the advantage. $92 with discount
Aug 12, 2025 · Kevie NewmanThis was an okay place for the night but I would not stay again. I had a very lovely spot right on the water with lots of privacy and space however even though children were fishing next to my spot and others playing, swimming, and boating in other locations, dogs were not allowed in the water. There was not even one single spot given for the dogs to swim or cool off. It was very awkward so I had to keep the dogs in the van with the air-conditioner turned on. I visited a few weeks ago and there were no food offerings, much was still closed. I paid $81 which included a discount. There was a small fenced-off area near the entrance,a walk away from my spot, with nothing in it for dogs. My dogs found no interest there. The dog run was not large enough to play fetch and there was no water or any other feature for the dogs or people, it was just very hot with mosquitoes and potentially ticks. 😔 The shower was functional but very cramped, nowhere to put your clothes but it did work. There was also laundry available. The main reason I would never stay here was the huge blaring light shining into my camp spot. Felt like a "prison" light. It was absolutely awful and ruined any sense of comfort, peace, or rest. It was brighter than daylight and highly distrubing. Additionally, long-term campers had lots of bright outdoor lights left on all night. The big "prison" type light attracted thousands of mosquitoes. Maybe that was the point? A resident camper told me to watch for the bats that would come and eat the mosquitoes. After a mostly sleepless night, I found a small boat near my site partially filled with fetid water and breeding mosquitoes. Other campers did not have the beautiful view, I did enjoy the view (at least during the daylight hours.) The campground itself has potential. I was sad and tired when I left. Needs improvement if possible.
Jul 17, 2025 · Jamie RosenthalThe waterfront sites offer a gorgeous view. Bathrooms are outdated but clean. The staff was super friendly. We stayed before Memorial Day so it was very quiet. The airplanes didn't bother us at all and the kids loved seeing them. The location can not be beat! We will definitely be visiting again!
May 18, 2025 · Jennifer WalkerThis campground isn’t for us! There is zero privacy and all branches are trimmed high and no shrubbery. This is intentional obviously, because guests are under constant watch. You can see just about every lot! They have employees slowly riding around in case someone breaks a rule? There are signs everywhere about what you can’t do. The planes flying overhead woke us up every morning. The lots are all sand. The showers are not that nice and very little room to put stuff. We had to carry our stuff in a plastic bag to shower. Felt like the grounds on a reform school! My partner and I voted it the worst we’ve ever been to. We were glad to finally leave!
