West Lake Campground 1 About
For Iowans who appreciate the simplicity and natural beauty of a true outdoor escape, West Lake Campground 1 in Neola, IA, offers a distinctive experience. This isn't a resort-style RV park with all the bells and whistles, but rather a charming county park campground that provides a beautiful, serene setting for those looking to disconnect and immerse themselves in nature. If your ideal camping trip involves peaceful lakeside views, the sounds of nature, and a welcoming, unpretentious atmosphere, then West Lake Campground 1 is a hidden gem worth discovering right here in our own state.
West Lake Campground 1 is celebrated for its natural charm and quiet ambiance. It’s a place where the "beautiful County Park campground" setting truly shines, with its scenic lake providing a tranquil backdrop for your stay. While it offers essential amenities like electric hookups, it embraces a more rustic approach to camping, providing pit toilets and a single water faucet, appealing to those who prefer a more traditional outdoor experience. Imagine waking to the "lovely singing birds," enjoying the calm of the lake, and unwinding without the constant buzz of modern life. It's a popular spot, especially on weekends, drawing in campers from across the region who are seeking a refreshing escape from the everyday hustle and bustle, providing an authentic taste of Iowa's natural landscapes.
West Lake Campground 1 is nestled in Neola, IA 51559, USA. This location places it within Pottawattamie County, offering convenient access for many Iowans, especially those in the western part of the state and the Omaha/Council Bluffs metropolitan area. Being approximately 25 miles outside of Omaha, it serves as an ideal weekend destination for city dwellers seeking a quick and accessible natural retreat.
The accessibility of West Lake Campground 1 primarily revolves around vehicle access. As a county park campground, it is typically accessible by paved or well-maintained gravel roads, suitable for RVs and trailers, though some internal loops might be "wonky" as noted in a review, potentially requiring some careful maneuvering for larger rigs. A key aspect of its accessibility, particularly for local users, is its "first-come, first-served" policy for many sites. This means that especially on weekends, securing a spot requires an early arrival. As one reviewer noted, it "filled up fast," with "a solid 8 RVs came by looking for a spot after it filled up." This highlights its popularity as a weekend destination for Iowans, making strategic timing crucial for securing a site. While the general location is convenient, understanding this booking dynamic is essential for a successful trip, encouraging visitors to "come early and forget just passing through on a weekend."
West Lake Campground 1 offers a selection of fundamental services, emphasizing a more traditional and rustic camping experience while still providing crucial amenities.
- Electric Hookups: All campsites provide electric hookups, a significant convenience for RVs and for powering basic needs for tent campers.
- Pit Toilets/Outhouses: Multiple basic pit toilets are spread throughout the tent camping areas and the campground, offering convenient, albeit rustic, restroom facilities.
- Water Faucet: A single communal water faucet is available for campers to access potable water.
- Excellent Wi-Fi: A notable and highly praised amenity, offering strong internet access that allows for streaming video, a definite plus where cell service might be spotty.
- Campground Hosts: Knowledgeable and friendly park staff are present to assist campers, as noted in reviews, despite their potential annoyance with common park rule infractions.
- Firewood: While not explicitly stated as for sale on-site, the context of camping implies that firewood is likely available either at the park office or a nearby local vendor.
- Pull-Through Sites: Most sites are pull-through, offering convenience for RVs, though campers may need to back into sites if the park is full or other campers park "wonky."
West Lake Campground 1 offers several key features and highlights that draw campers looking for a specific type of outdoor experience in Iowa.
- Beautiful County Park Setting: The overall ambiance is described as a "beautiful County Park campground," indicating a well-maintained and aesthetically pleasing natural environment.
- Lakeside Proximity: While not directly on the lake, the campground is likely very close, offering scenic views and a serene atmosphere often associated with lakeside camping. The "lovely singing birds" further enhance the natural setting.
- Strong Wi-Fi Connectivity: A standout feature for a rustic campground, providing "excellent Wifi" that allows for streaming video, which is a significant advantage, especially given the "spotty" cellphone service in the area.
- Affordable Camping: The $20 price for a site (implied for electric hookup from a review) is considered a good value for the amenities and location, especially as a popular weekend destination.
- Friendly and Knowledgeable Staff: Despite challenges, the park staff are noted as being "knowledgeable and friendly," contributing to a positive experience.
- Proximity to Omaha: Its location approximately 25 miles outside of Omaha makes it a very convenient weekend getaway for city residents.
- Rustic Charm: The blend of electric hookups with basic pit toilets and a single water faucet provides a more traditional camping experience, appealing to those who prefer simplicity over luxury.
As a county park campground, West Lake Campground 1 typically operates on a standardized rate structure rather than frequent commercial promotions. However, the pricing itself can be considered a strong ongoing "offer" to local Iowans.
- Affordable Site Fees: A review noted "$20 for people will claim their spot a day ahead of the weekend." This indicates a very reasonable daily rate for an electric hookup site in a county park, making it an attractive option for budget-conscious campers. (Note: This is an inferred price for an electric site based on the context of the review, as tent camping at Arrowhead Park, managed by the same county, was $10.)
- First-Come, First-Served Policy: For many sites, this policy acts as a "promotion" of accessibility for those who are prepared to arrive early, especially during peak seasons, ensuring a spot without requiring advance reservations far out. This is a common practice in many Iowa county parks.
For the most accurate and current information regarding site fees, specific reservation policies (as some sites might be reservable), and any other potential offerings, it is always best to contact the Pottawattamie County Conservation directly. They manage the park and would have the most up-to-date details.

The electric hookups are a practical convenience, ensuring comfort for both RVers and tent campers who bring their own power. Waking to "lovely singing birds" and enjoying the serenity of the lake underscores the simple, yet profound, joys that make West Lake Campground 1 a truly suitable and beloved spot for Iowans seeking a genuine outdoor escape.
Customer Reviews
Beautiful County Park campground. Electric hookup only. No water or sewer at campsites. There is a pit toilet, an outhouse. One water faucet. Most sites are pull through but they were all full so we backed into a campsite on the side of the hill. Rude neighbor had loose viscous dog that attacked my wife and our miniature poodle that was on a leash. Excellent Wifi. We were able to stream video. Good thing because cellphone service was spotty for calling and cellphone hotspot wouldn't work. Too many trees for Starlink too. Lovely singing birds woke us in the morning.
Eh.. It was a place for us to crash for a night on the way through from Utah to the Midwest. We stayed in Camp loop #1 on Thursday, June 13th. Rolled in at about 6pm. Glad we got here when we did because it filled up fast. A solid 8 RVs came by looking for a spot after it filled up. It's about 25 miles outside of Omaha so it's seems to be a weekend destination for them. There were a few people that came and set up a tent then left. For 20 bucks people will claim their spot a day ahead of the weekend so be prepared for that. Happens all the time everywhere but some places have cracked down on it. Loop #1 is a bit wonky, People park in the pull throughs backwards so the passenger sides of the RVs are looking at each other... Didn't have a chance to check out the park, from what we saw it looked nice. The park staff we encountered were knowledgeable and friendly but annoyed at the tent place holders and wonky parking. So, come early and forget just passing through on a weekend.
This is a small camping area, but still offers a lot. There is one restroom location with plumping and showers. RV, Tent, and cabins are available for camping. There are some good trails here along with canoe and paddle boat rental. They have a dock for boats with telling motors being allowed. Also a sand volleyball court and at least one basketball hoop.
Campground 1 has 6 pull through spots and 4 back in spots. Electric only at each site. Very quiet and relaxing spot. The park is extremely well maintained. They usually mow on Wednesdays if you care about that stuff.
Love this campground! 6 pull thru sites. Spacious with a few big trees for shade.
