Customer Reviews
Tent camped one night on a cross country trip. It's rural with only a few sites. Pit toilet. Fire ring and picnic table at each site. Most of the sites are grassy and flat. There were 2 or 3 sites in a different, but nearby, area that wouldn't work as well for a tent. We loved this campground. It's peaceful and pretty. Lots of little lakes. The sounds of the nocturnal animals, birds, amphibians (you name it) filled the air all night.
Not bad for free camping, absolutely beautiful and quiet. Here, coyotes howl at night and the raccoons playing. If you want peace and quiet, this is the place to come
Whetstone Creek is a great Conservation Area. Fishing and hunting, hiking, and a very nice gun range. A stop in the village of Williamsburg rounds out this gem.
Extremely chill and peaceful. Not terribly far from I-70. Near a very small town (gas station closes extremely early around 7 pm). There is a pump for water at the attendant station (nobody attending which is A-OK) no need for reservation card and is still free to camp. There are grills over the fire pits but firewood is scarce unless you go for a hike into the wooded areas. There are multiple vault type toilets available, and amazingly there was also (decent) toilet paper! The stools could do well with a hose down but there are toilet seats and the seats were clean. No sinks for hand washing. The area where I camped had a nice sized grassy area with trees spaced perfectly for hammocks. 3 BBQ fire pits and picnic tables but could have easily held 8-10 tents. There was another area further down the gravel road but it had much less grass (mostly gravel). Surprisingly few bugs although definitely recommend a citronella candle and spray (if your into that). A few other campers around, very quiet and respectful. Campgrounds were free of litter although there are no trash cans at camp area. Thought I saw a dumpster at the entrance. I expected to encounter mischievous racoons after sunset but none came up to raid the grill. Had much chaos ensue at other conservation area campgrounds around here. There are a few small lakes to fish and if you follow a grassy lane at the back of the grounds there is a creek with a deeper section (might go swim tomorrow, unsure still). Does get pretty warm by 6pm. Nice open areas for star gazing, very low light pollution. The grass in field is getting long enough to be difficult but I pack pruning shears to clean up areas around trees so they work for trimming up long grass if needed. The shears have been a game changer when it comes to hanging a hammock, most trees have too much growth for easy hammock setup. I am only giving 4 stars because of lack of water spigots at campsites, the stools needing a good rinsing, lack of firewood (not necessarily preventable) and the dust from the gravel roads. Understandable that gravel roads are dusty, however, many campgrounds will have a pump truck spray the roads weekly or bi-weekly, often the same company that services the outhouses. I am sure the primitiveness is mostly to keep from charging a fee which is super! Would camp here again, although would not see much reason to stay more than one night or maybe 2 if the fishing is good. Also no lights at toilets so bring a flashlight!
There's no bathrooms or power, but this place is great for an over night camp. They have some trails near by. It felt safe and there were about 7 other cars camping out here.
