For New Yorkers who view the Shawangunk Ridge—affectionately known as "The Gunks"—as their outdoor playground, the Samuel F. Pryor III Shawangunk Gateway Campground is more than just a place to pitch a tent; it is the essential gateway to adventure. Developed in a landmark partnership between the American Alpine Club and the Mohonk Preserve, this facility fills a long-standing need for high-quality, convenient camping directly at the base of New York’s most renowned rock-climbing and hiking destination. It is designed specifically to serve the community of climbers, hikers, and outdoor enthusiasts who flock to the region for its stunning cliffs, scenic carriage roads, and crystalline lakes.
Opened in 2015, the campground offers a high-quality, minimalist camping experience focused on practicality and immediate access to the outdoors. Unlike larger, resort-style campgrounds, the Pryor III Shawangunk Gateway Campground is intentional about providing a supportive, community-driven atmosphere. It is rustic yet modern, boasting essential amenities like clean bathhouses, which are crucial after a long day on the trails or the rock face. The campground is proudly tent-only, ensuring a specific, low-impact vibe that appeals to true outdoor adventurers. While some sites may feel close together, especially during peak season, this layout often fosters a friendly, congenial environment where climbers and hikers share stories and tips on their latest adventures.
The campground’s very existence is a testament to the local commitment to conservation and resilient outdoor access, making it a proud and appropriate basecamp for environmentally conscious New York adventurers. It operates seasonally, typically welcoming guests from early spring to late fall, which perfectly covers the region’s prime hiking, climbing, and viewing seasons, including the spectacular fall foliage.

Friendly staff, facilities clean and well maintained. Sites a closer together than you might expect, which if the camp is full makes it feel a bit crowded, but it’s a different vibe from a state park and I found it congenial and fun. Lots of climbers and outdoors people off on adventures. You’ll need coins for the showers but can change money up front if the camp office is open. Extra bonus: a wineberry bush simply dripping with berries. If you’re here in mid-July, look along the side of the road to the left as you go into from the front lodge.
Jul 19, 2025 · Matthew OlwellWhat a fantastic spot! We stayed here for a night in July in our camper van. We utilized parking spot #5 for car campers and it was great. Opened up to a patch of grass and was a short walk up to the bathroom and showers. Facilities were clean and more than adequate. Superb location to all the area has to offer with climbing, hiking and biking. I will say that the other four spots in the car camping area were just parking lot spots with vehicles on both sides. So not quite as nice. But if you can get spot five, especially if you have a van or small camper, it does feel a little more comfortable
Jul 20, 2025 · Kevin SchmiederIf you're looking for a nice simple clean campground in the Catskills, this is a good choice. No fancy activities or amenities like a pool, water park, playground, etc. But the tent sites are spacious and well kept, and they each have a tent platform and a picnic table. It's a pretty, heavily wooded, and rustic campground. The bathrooms are clean and the campground manager is responsive and friendly. There's a quaint little town of New Paltz just a few miles down the road where you can find nice shops and restaurants. You can't have a campfire at your tent site but there's a communal bonfire at the pavilion. They're also dog friendly so you don't have to leave furry family members at home. There's WiFi at the pavilion and I got 2-3 bars of T-Mobile signal at my tent site.
Oct 01, 2024 · Warren TangGood campsite. Has showers. Kitchen area with warm water and evening campfire in the communal area. Lots of trails around for hiking and cycling. Friendly and accommodating staff.
Apr 20, 2025 · Danielle BirchstreamThis is a great campground. I came 10 years ago with my son, and again last weekend. The site is clean and well-maintained. The staff is friendly. I love the communal fire pit. The bathrooms and washing stations are all clean and well-maintained. This place is a great jump-off spot for hiking and climbing in the Gunks!
