Wilderness State Park Campground is proudly located in Carp Lake, MI 49718, USA. This prime location places it just 11 miles west of Mackinaw City, making it a convenient and accessible escape for many Michiganders. Whether you're driving up from the Lower Peninsula or making your way from the Upper Peninsula, the park's proximity to major routes ensures a smooth journey. Accessibility within the park is well-managed. While some unique "hike-through" or backcountry sites require foot access, the main campgrounds are designed to accommodate a range of vehicles, including RVs. As some campers have noted, the park is known for being "strictly run" with entry to sites available shortly before reservation times, so planning for a brief wait in one of the day-use areas if you arrive early is a good idea. This helps maintain the park's excellent condition and ensures a smooth experience for all visitors. The park's commitment to maintaining its natural integrity, even with modern facilities, ensures a top-notch outdoor experience.

Wilderness State Park truly distinguishes itself through its unique features and highlights, offering a diverse array of experiences for every kind of outdoor enthusiast.
While state parks typically operate on a standard fee structure for camping and recreation passports, Wilderness State Park, like other Michigan State Parks, generally does not offer individual "promotions" in the way a private business might. However, there are inherent values and offerings that could be considered "special offers" in the broader sense for Michigan residents.
The Michigan Recreation Passport is a key benefit for locals. By purchasing an annual Recreation Passport for a modest fee, Michigan residents gain unlimited access to all state parks and recreation areas, including Wilderness State Park, for an entire year. This provides significant savings for frequent visitors and encourages exploration of our state's beautiful natural resources.
Additionally, the park's seasonal nature programs, which are often free to registered campers, can be considered a special offering. These programs provide unique educational and recreational opportunities that enhance the camping experience without additional cost. The availability of diverse campsite types, from modern electric sites to rustic walk-in options, allows visitors to choose an experience that fits their budget and preferred level of wilderness immersion.
For the most up-to-date information on camping rates, reservation policies, and any potential special events or limited-time offerings, it is always recommended to check the official Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) website or contact the park directly.

I am never disappointed with Wilderness state park. Its a great place, most recently redone, with modern facilities. I stayed at a hike-through site on the beach and it was gorgeous. I bit of caution, this park is strictly run. You won't be let in to your site until about 10 minutes before your reservation so plan on sitting around in one of the day parks if you arrive early.
Jul 04, 2023 · Robert MurrellA friend and I stayed at the wilderness site for a night while walking the NCT. The wilderness site is NOT at this waypoint, it’s only available on foot. We took a side trail to get to the campsite HQ to pick up our permit before continuing on. Plenty of room for a couple backpacking tents. Nice privy and bear hang but I’m not sure it’s worth $30. Next time I’ll stay along the lake in hopes to see the auroras that we missed when camped out in the woods.
Oct 06, 2022 · Paige WesolowskiMaybe 500 sites in this State Park. On the water. In the woods. Full hook-up. Primitive. Best in state according to some. My favorites are the 500s.
Oct 02, 2023 · John CrankshawGreat place to hang out. At least 10° cooler than anywhere else inland. Newly refurbished east loop with lots of excellent sites on and along the lakeshore. Like all the developed campgrounds, it can be very busy and noisy.
Jun 18, 2023 · Randy ButtersWe love wilderness state park, but we camped for two nights and the campground host walked around confronting campers about the smallest things both nights. He was very loud and unpleasant - confrontations about things like clotheslines and parking on the grass could be heard plenty of campsites away. He even cussed out a group of young people for driving the wrong way, using very colorful language. It was NOT a family friendly atmosphere. We go camping to get away from the HOA but this campground host was worse than any HOA I've heard of. Two stars because the beautiful campsites and views of the lake slightly made up for the rude campsite host.
