For Kentuckians, this means an opportunity to experience a secluded, lakeside camping adventure without traveling excessively far from home.

The journey to Zilpo H Loop is often described as "off the beaten path," contributing to its peaceful and remote atmosphere. While it offers a sense of seclusion, accessing the campground is generally straightforward for those prepared for a drive into the forest. Travelers will typically navigate forest roads to reach the Zilpo Recreation Area, with clear signage guiding them to the specific "H Loop" within the larger campground complex. The remote nature means it's an hour's drive to the nearest town, Morehead, KY, for supplies, reinforcing the advice to bring everything you need with you.

  • Metal Posts with Hooks: A unique and convenient feature at many sites are the provided metal posts with hooks, useful for hanging laundry lines, lanterns, or even garbage bags securely.

  • Restroom Facilities: Shower houses are available within the campground. While some reviews mention them being "institutional" with peeling paint and lint, the crucial detail is that the shower water is hot. Promotions or Special Offers

Zilpo H Loop Campground, being part of the Zilpo Recreation Area and managed by the U.S. Forest Service, typically operates under a structured fee system rather than offering frequent, dynamic promotions found at privately owned campgrounds. However, visitors should be aware of standard policies and potential ways to save on fees:

  • Interagency Passes: Holders of Interagency Passes, such as the America the Beautiful – National Parks & Federal Recreational Lands Pass (including Senior Pass, Access Pass, and Annual Pass), may be eligible for a 50% discount on the campsite fee. This is a significant benefit for those who frequently visit federal recreation sites.

  • Seasonal Operations: It's crucial to note that certain amenities or services might be seasonal. For instance, while shower houses are available, their operational period might be limited (e.g., typically spring to fall). Check the Recreation.gov website for exact operational dates and any associated fee adjustments for off-season camping when fewer services are available.

  • Daily Rates: Fees are generally charged on a per-night basis for each campsite. There aren't typically long-term stay discounts beyond the daily rate. Always confirm current rates and any potential extra vehicle fees when booking.

  • No Store Operations: Based on recent customer reviews, the store at the beach area was not open and did not appear set up for future business. This means there are no on-site opportunities for purchasing supplies, emphasizing the need to bring all food, drinks, and essential items with you. This isn't a "promotion," but a crucial piece of information for planning your budget and packing.

  • No Laundry Service: Similarly, there is no laundry service available on-site, requiring a drive of an hour to Morehead, KY, for laundromat access. This is an important consideration for longer stays.

For the most accurate and up-to-date information on fees, availability, and operational dates, the best approach is to visit the official Recreation.gov website for Zilpo H Loop or call the listed phone number.

Well kept sites with great views of the lake. Definitely off the beaten path and peaceful. The shower houses on the other hand are full of spiders and other creatures which I normally don’t mind but they were literally everywhere so we didn’t use them. Trails were pretty overgrown. The camp host friendly and knowledgeable of the area. Pets are not permitted on the beach or in buildings. The store at the beach area was not open nor did it look set up to future business. Do not use styrofoam coolers as we witnessed a raccoon destroying one at of our neighboring sites. Overall, I would still return and recommend.

Huge camp sites. Two picnic tables on most sites. Asphalt drive for site and then compacted pea gravel railroad tie areas for the rest of the campsite. They also provide metal posts with hooks to hang laundry line, lanterns or garbage. Extremely level sites. Lots of wild animals, racoons, bears and wild turkeys. Found a raccoon under our truck. Secure all food and supplies safely inside car or RV. You can not leave anything out at all. We came in May; only one other person camping. Bathrooms are institutional. Paint on floor peeling. Gross lint covering shower drain. However, the shower water was hot! Lights in the bathroom do not turn on during the day. There is no way to turn them on either. Thank God for the skylights! Cave Run Lake is amazing! We kayaked today. It's huge! We saw lots of fishing but no catching. Fisherman all said how peaceful it is. Totally agree! No laundry service. Had to drive an hour to Morehead, KY to find a laundromat, which was superfast, efficient with many machines to be done quickly! Super quiet campground. Very remote. Bring all the food, drinks and items you will need with you. None of the stores are open at the campground and it looks like they will not be opening any time soon. It's an hour to get any supplies. Thankfully, they answer the phone when you call the number on the map. Danny our camp host was super friendly and helpful. Told us of the impending tornado and to seek shelter in the shower stall. Thankfully, it was just a rain storm. Surprisingly, cell service is available. Up here in the mountains we did not expect to have any connection. There is a cell tower on the way out to H loop! Hallelujah!

We've stayed at Zilpo two times this summer. The first time was in F loop and this time in H Loop. H is the favorite so far because it has the best views. We love it here and are sure to come back every year.

Wonderful primitive camp ground. Large and private sites. Many with direct access to the water. Nice beach, bath houses were clean, and all around very nice. It is pretty remote, so bring anything you need!

Campsites are gorgeous. Each feels far apart with woods between.
