Pinewoods Campground excels in offering a genuinely immersive outdoor experience, often providing the seclusion sought by even the most avid backpackers, while still being accessible for family camping trips.
What truly sets Pinewoods Campground apart is its unique balance. It offers the feeling of being "off-grid" with large, well-separated campsites that provide a sense of privacy often missing in other campgrounds. Yet, it remains part of the esteemed Wisconsin State Park system, ensuring a level of maintenance and access to broader recreational facilities. We’ll delve into the specifics of its location, the services it provides, its standout features, and why it's considered an excellent choice for Wisconsin locals looking to reconnect with nature. Services Offered
Pinewoods Campground provides essential services designed to facilitate a comfortable and authentic camping experience within a natural setting. As part of the Wisconsin State Park system, the focus is on core amenities that support outdoor adventure, rather than extensive resort-style features.
- Spacious Campsites: A standout feature, as highlighted by a camper, is the generous size of the sites. Site 288, for example, was noted to be "huge!" and could "easily accommodate 4 or 5 large tents." This ample space allows for comfortable setup, privacy from neighbors, and room for multiple vehicles.
- Separation from Neighbors: The campsites are "well separated from our neighbors," providing a high degree of privacy and a sense of seclusion that many campers seek. This is a significant advantage for those who prefer a quieter, more personal camping experience.
- Direct Trail Access: A key service is the campground's adjacency to the Scuppernong hiking trails. This means campers can step directly from their site onto a network of paths for hiking, running, and mountain biking, eliminating the need to drive to trailheads.
- Water Availability: Potable water sources are available within the campground for drinking, cooking, and basic washing needs.
- Pit Toilets: Clean and well-maintained pit toilets are provided for restroom facilities. A review specifically mentions, "Pit toilets across the street were clean and well stocked," indicating regular servicing and attention to hygiene.
- Shaded Areas and Hammock-Friendly Trees: The campsites feature "trees well spaced enough for 3 or 4 hammocks," offering natural shade and additional relaxation options. This thoughtful detail enhances the outdoor comfort.
- Camp Host: While a logistical issue with wood/ice payment was noted, the presence of a "camp host" indicates on-site assistance and oversight, providing a point of contact for campers for questions or minor issues.
- Fire Rings and Picnic Tables: Standard amenities for state park campgrounds typically include a designated fire ring for campfires and picnic tables at each site for meal preparation and outdoor dining. (Not explicitly stated but standard practice).
- Waste Disposal: Designated areas for trash and recycling are usually available to help campers maintain cleanliness and environmental responsibility. (Not explicitly stated but standard practice).

- Off-Peak Season Rates: While not explicitly a "promotion," camping fees are sometimes slightly lower during the non-peak season (e.g., late fall, early spring, or mid-week stays outside of summer holidays) compared to peak summer weekends. It's always advisable to check the official DNR reservation system for specific pricing fluctuations.
- Senior Citizen or Disabled Citizen Reduced Rates: The Wisconsin DNR may offer reduced rates for vehicle admission stickers or camping fees for eligible senior citizens or disabled citizens. Specific criteria and application processes would be detailed on the DNR website.
- Group Site Specifics: While not a discount, booking a group campsite like those at Pinewoods might offer better value per person for larger parties compared to booking multiple individual sites, especially if you factor in the generous space provided.
To get the most accurate and up-to-date information on camping fees, reservation policies, and any applicable passes or discounts, it is essential to consult the official Wisconsin DNR website for the Kettle Moraine State Forest - Southern Unit. Customer Reviews
I'm not big on campgrounds in general. I prefer the seclusion of solo backpacking, but we decided to do a family camping trip for my birthday. Our site (288) was well separated from our neighbors, and backed up to the Scuppernong hiking trails adjacent to the campground. Our site was huge! It could easily accommodate 4 or 5 large tents, and had trees well spaced enough for 3 or 4 hammocks as well. Pit toilets across the street were clean and well stocked... The only negative to our trip was that the camp host's wood / ice could no longer be paid for with cash. He had a QR code linked to a payment site, but there was no cell signal at the camp host location. I had to drive out to the park entrance to get signal, pay, then return to show the receipt in order to get my bundles of wood... at a cost of $8 for 6 or 7 pieces of wood. I'd suggest buying from one of the local residences instead.
Really chill and quiet place. Had a good night sleep. Went mountain biking down a trail and some Karen said I wasn't aloud to do it but I checked online and you totally can. I did the orange loop and it was pretty awesome!
Very nice campground. Awesome to have such a woodsy option so close to Milwaukee! This will be our quick get away when we don’t have time to go up north!
This is one of my favorite campgrounds in Southeast Wisconsin. It feels like you're in Northern Wisconsin without the long drive. The bathrooms and showers are always clean and up to date. There are lots of hiking trails in the area, and Ottawa Lake isn't too far away with a beach to swim in. I highly recommend camping here.
We stayed in the "Quiet Loop" it was quite peaceful no screaming kids or barking dogs overnight. Nice tent pads at most sites. RV'ers check your site before booking, some parking pads are way off level compared to others.
