For New York residents looking to elevate their traditional camping experience from a wooded lakeshore to a secluded island retreat, Alger Island Campground presents a truly unique Adirondack opportunity. Situated entirely on an island in the beautiful Fourth Lake—part of the famed Fulton Chain of Lakes—this New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) facility provides an authentic, boat-access-only camping adventure. It is a destination that combines a sense of splendid isolation with the vibrant, resort-like atmosphere of the popular Old Forge area.
Alger Island is not your typical drive-up campground. The necessity of accessing the island by watercraft immediately establishes a distinct, rustic, and adventurous tone, making it a favorite for seasoned campers and paddlers who appreciate a quieter, more remote setting. The campground is smaller and more intimate than many of its mainland counterparts, offering only 17 sites, the majority of which are traditional Adirondack lean-tos. This limited capacity and unique setup contribute to a strong sense of community among those who visit year after year, with many declaring, "We absolutely love Alger Island. We go every year!"
While offering a rugged feel, the island location places you directly on Fourth Lake, opening up the entire Fulton Chain for exploration via motorboat, canoe, or kayak. You are immersed in a true Adirondack ecosystem, yet the amenities and attractions of Old Forge are just a short boat ride and drive away. Alger Island provides a perfect solution for the local New Yorker who wants to escape the mainland noise and experience island camping at its finest, all while staying within the boundaries of a well-maintained state facility.

Very crowded lake, campsites are nice, but the trail around the island walks through them, expect visitors. If you’re on the restaurant side, bring ear plugs and expect to hear screaming until 2:30am.

Jun 03, 2023 · HadorandaIf you enjoy sleep deprived nights, hikers strolling onto your campsite because the trail runs through it and bleeding eardrums from loud powerboats then this is the place to camp. Daiker's across the water has live entertainment on the weekends until 2 am, whether you like it or not. The bar is only 300 yards away but my god, does the sound carry. I could actually hear a drunk guy hitting on a girl and getting shut down from our campsite at 1:30 AM. The island itself really isn't bad aside from the trail layout. It does have clean amenities and nice lean twos. If you like a peaceful camping experience, find another spot.
Aug 17, 2021 · BrianDo not follow the google maps or GPS directions, they will lead you the wrong way (onto private property). Access Alger Island campground via Petrie Road. There are signs for the campground on South Shore Road, follow them carefully. This camp site is water access only, there are many boat rentals in the area, but I do not believe the campground itself rents boats. Had a great time! brought our own canoe, no potable water on the island itself.
Jul 13, 2016 · BiomecamanGreat place for canoe camping. Bring your own food and wood. The island is small, but big enough. There is a picnic area on the east end of the island, some walking trails, and several lean-tos with outhouse.
