The emphasis here is on simplicity and the sheer joy of being outdoors. This flexibility, coupled with the fact that no reservations are needed, makes Bar-K Wrangler Campsite a spontaneous and welcoming destination for any Missourian craving an immediate escape into nature. It's important to set expectations accordingly, as this is not a developed campground with modern amenities.
Basic Campsites with Picnic Tables: There are "only 3 campsites with picnic tables near the creek," providing a rare convenience for a free, primitive area. These are first-come, first-served.
Numerous Hidden Campsites and Fire Rings: Beyond the few picnic tables, the area boasts "dozens of hidden campsites and fire rings throughout the entire area." These are undeveloped spots where campers can set up their tents, typically identified by previous use. Campers should ensure fire rings are safe and properly extinguished.
Access to Swan Creek: Campers have direct access to the "crystal clear water" of Swan Creek, suitable for "dipping" (wading/swimming). This creek can also serve as a water source, but all water from natural sources must be filtered, purified, or boiled before consumption.
Undeveloped Environment: There are no formal restrooms, showers, or potable water spigots. Campers are responsible for their own waste management (packing out all trash, burying human waste appropriately away from water sources and trails) and bringing all necessary supplies.

Customer Reviews
Nice quiet camping Experience with lots of trails to walk through. Also nice river area to go dipping
Bar-k Wrangler Campsite is an amazing, special place. By far my favorite free camping area in Missouri. This part of the Mark Twain National Forest is beautiful and the Swan Creek Recreation Area has something to offer for everyone. Swan creek has crystal clear water and there are dozens of Scenic hiking trails. There are only 3 campsites with picnic tables near the creek but there are dozens of hidden campsites and fire rings throughout the entire area. We are so blessed to have such a beautiful no hassle no reservations needed place to camp for free.
HORSE CAMP... only wish hikers would not take all the good spaces for them and their tents... they can camp anywhere out in the woods. Also, leash is required with dogs...
I have grown up riding these trails and camping down here, I am now able to do the same with my kids. Many great trails for hiking and horse back riding, you are right down by the creek. Peaceful of a night with a great view of the stars, and listening to the sounds of wildlife. Couldn't ask for better.
Lots of great hiking to be had around here, albeit a tad boring for most of it. For many hours of swatting horseflies, being covered in ravenous ticks, and sloshing through mud only a world war 1 vet would understand, you may spot a pretty bird or see a bland view of numerous bland trees. I love this place.
