Bodcau Campgrounds About
For those of us in Louisiana, a genuine escape into nature often means finding a tranquil spot where we can reconnect with the outdoors, enjoy quality time with loved ones, and experience the unique beauty of our state. Look no further than Bodcau Campgrounds, a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (COE) managed property located near Haughton, LA. Known for its serene setting and access to the vast Bayou Bodcau Reservoir, this campground offers a compelling option for both casual campers and avid outdoor enthusiasts.
Bodcau Campgrounds is more than just a place to park your RV or pitch a tent; it's a gateway to a variety of recreational activities and a chance to immerse yourself in the natural landscape of Northwest Louisiana. Whether you're planning a lively family get-together, a quiet fishing trip, or an adventurous hiking excursion, Bodcau provides a welcoming environment. In this article, we'll dive deep into what makes Bodcau Campgrounds a popular choice for locals, covering its location, the amenities it provides, its unique features, and how to get in touch to plan your next memorable outdoor adventure. While some aspects, like older facilities, are noted, the overall experience of peace, natural beauty, and spacious sites makes it a highly regarded destination.
From the moment you arrive, the ample shade and spacious sites contribute to a comfortable and relaxing stay. It’s a place where you can truly unwind, surrounded by the sights and sounds of Louisiana’s rich ecosystem. Let's explore why so many Louisianans find themselves returning to Bodcau Campgrounds season after season.
Bodcau Campgrounds is conveniently located at 843-897 Bodcau Dam Rd, Haughton, LA 71037, USA. This placement near Haughton, a community just east of Shreveport and Bossier City, makes it highly accessible for a significant portion of Louisiana residents, particularly those in the northern part of the state. Its proximity to major urban centers means that campers can enjoy a peaceful natural retreat without enduring excessively long drives, allowing more time for relaxation and recreation.
The campground is part of the larger Bayou Bodcau Reservoir area, which is managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. This designation often ensures a certain standard of maintenance and a focus on outdoor recreation. Access to the campground typically involves driving on paved roads, making it suitable for all types of vehicles, including larger RVs and trailers. However, one review noted that the dump station near the exit, situated on top of a steep hill with a turn, could be challenging for larger rigs, cautioning about a "rained out ditch" that might cause undercarriage damage if not approached carefully. This specific detail is valuable for RV owners to be aware of.
Despite minor navigational challenges like the dump station approach or cellular signal strength (one bar for Verizon, often no signal inside an RV), the overall accessibility to and within the campground is generally good. Its location allows easy access to the reservoir for boating and fishing, and to various trails for hiking and exploring the extensive Bayou Bodcau Wildlife Management Area. The distance from grocery stores and restaurants (approximately 10 miles away, according to reviews) means campers should plan accordingly and bring necessary supplies, but the convenience of a short drive to urban amenities remains a significant advantage for this prime Louisiana camping spot.
Based on customer reviews and general information about COE campgrounds, Bodcau Campgrounds offers a range of services designed to enhance the camping experience:
RV and Tent Sites: The campground provides well-sized spots suitable for both RVs and tents, accommodating various camping preferences. Many sites feature concrete pads for RVs.
Utility Hookups: Most developed sites, such as the ones mentioned in reviews (e.g., Spot 5), typically include electric and water hookups, though the exact placement (e.g., passenger side near the front) might require longer connections for some RVs.
Dump Station: A sanitary dump station is available near the exit for RV waste disposal, although caution is advised due to its challenging approach on a steep hill with a potential ditch.
Bathhouses/Restrooms: Flush toilets and showers are generally available in COE campgrounds. While one review explicitly states the "bath house needs to be torn down and start over," indicating a need for modernization, these facilities are present for camper convenience.
Playground: A clean playground is available and conveniently located near the campsites, making it ideal for families with children.
Fire Rings and Grills: Individual campsites are typically equipped with fire rings for campfires and grills for cooking, enhancing the outdoor experience.
Picnic Tables: Each campsite usually includes a picnic table for outdoor dining and gathering.
Access to Water Activities: The campground provides direct or easy access to Bayou Bodcau Reservoir for fishing, boating, and paddling. A life jacket loaner station and boat ramps are also available in recreation areas within the reservoir.
Bodcau Campgrounds offers several appealing features and highlights that contribute to its popularity among Louisiana campers:
Shady, Level, and Well-Sized Spots: Numerous reviews praise the ample shade provided by trees, the level nature of the campsites (with concrete pads for RVs being a plus), and the generous size of the spots, ensuring comfort and privacy for campers.
Family-Friendly Environment: The presence of a clean playground close to campsites makes it an excellent choice for families with children, offering safe and accessible entertainment. The general atmosphere is conducive to family get-togethers.
Access to Bayou Bodcau Reservoir: Being part of the Bayou Bodcau Reservoir system provides immediate access to excellent fishing opportunities (bass, catfish, bream, sunfish), boating, and canoeing. The reservoir is known for its beautiful scenery and wildlife.
Nature Trails and Outdoor Recreation: The surrounding Bayou Bodcau Wildlife Management Area offers extensive multi-use nature trails for hiking and biking (including the challenging 7-mile Durden Hills Nature Trail and the easy John Haygood Nature Trail), allowing visitors to explore the diverse landscape and observe wildlife.
Wildlife Viewing: The area is rich in wildlife, offering fantastic opportunities for birding (herons, hawks, owls) and spotting white-tailed deer, reptiles, and amphibians in their natural habitat.
Quiet and Enjoyable Grounds: Despite some noted facility issues, the overall grounds are described as enjoyable, and the environment is generally quiet, promoting relaxation and a true escape from daily life.
Value for Money: As a COE park, Bodcau Campgrounds often offers camping at a great value, making it an affordable option for extended stays or frequent visits.
Opportunity for Return Visits: The sentiment "We will definitely return" from a reviewer, despite minor inconveniences, speaks volumes about the overall positive experience and the campground's appeal for repeat visitors.
As a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (COE) campground, Bodcau Campgrounds typically operates on a standardized fee structure and generally does not offer specific, time-limited promotional deals in the same way private campgrounds might. However, there are common discounts and pricing structures that make COE parks, including Bodcau, an excellent value for many Louisiana residents:
Senior and Access Passes: Holders of the America the Beautiful – National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Senior Pass (for U.S. citizens or permanent residents 62 years or older) and Access Pass (for U.S. citizens or permanent residents with permanent disabilities) often receive a 50% discount on camping fees.
Standardized Nightly Rates: COE campgrounds usually have set nightly rates that are often more affordable than private campgrounds, providing consistent value regardless of the season (though rates can vary slightly by specific site amenities).
Long-Term Stay Discounts: While not a "promotion," staying for longer periods (e.g., weekly or monthly) can sometimes result in a lower average nightly rate compared to single-night stays. It is always best to inquire directly for current rates and availability for extended periods.
To confirm current rates, inquire about specific site availability, or learn more about any applicable discounts, it is highly recommended to contact Bodcau Campgrounds directly using the provided phone numbers. While online reservations might not always be available for all COE campgrounds, direct calls are often the best way to secure your spot and confirm pricing.

The strong inclination of past visitors to "definitely return" speaks volumes about the positive and memorable experiences created here. Customer Reviews
We have stayed here twice as it's a great place for family get-togethers, the bath house needs to be torn down and start over. It is very shady, and the playground is clean and close to the camp sites.
Clean, level, shady, well-sized spots. Spot 5 was very large concrete pad. Enjoyable grounds. Our utilities (spot 5) were located passenger side near the front, which was a challenge to reach with rv connections on driver side rear. Our water did not work, but we borrowed the neighbor's. Cell connection (Verizon) was one-bar outside, often no signal in the rv. The dump near the exit is a challenge to approach. It is on top of a steep hill with a turn, but the turn crosses a rained out ditch that may cause undercarriage damage, if your trailer tires cross at too deep of a spot. We Have visited day-time before, and while camping we kept wondered why it took us so long to stay a weekend. We will definitely return (but probably another spot).
This use to be my favorite place to camp we even stayed 14days two separate times in a tent but they have this one ranger he likes to harass us each time we are there kinda has a attitude so I know he isnt just making conversation. asking how long will we be there this time was kinda cocky with that question why the kids aren't in school I said they are homeschool and plus at that time it was spring break this just happened. so then he turns to my kids saying why dont yall put your heads together and think and tell me when you will graduate. I'll come back tommrow and you better have a answer for me. I thought it was disrespectful and none of his business he also told me not to eat to much. I was eating when he walked up im a plus size girl so that was disrespectful. Probably will be finding another place to camp from now on.
My family and I camp here every year. We love this campground, the host and the park rangers are very friendly and helpful.
Nice facilities, peaceful, good family camp sites, nice hiking and mountain bike trails...bring mosquito spray though it's been very wet.
