Tucked away in the Brule River State Forest, this small, rustic, and incredibly beautiful campground has garnered a reputation as one of the best camping destinations in the region. It's a place where the soothing sounds of the Brule River accompany the rustling of pine trees, providing a truly immersive outdoor adventure. Whether you're an avid canoer, a keen hiker, or simply someone yearning for peace and quiet in a stunning natural setting, Bois Brule Campground is a prime choice. This article will delve into the unique charm of this Wisconsin gem, providing local users with all the essential information to plan their visit to this highly sought-after camping spot.

Bois Brule Campground is ideally situated at 6250 Ranger Rd, Brule, WI 54820, USA. This address places it squarely within the renowned Brule River State Forest, a vast expanse of natural beauty known for its pristine river, diverse wildlife, and extensive forestland. The village of Brule, while small, serves as a hub for outdoor recreation in the area, particularly for those interested in fishing, canoeing, and hiking along the famous Bois Brule River.

The campground's location directly "along Brule river" is a significant draw, offering picturesque riverside campsites and direct access to the water. This proximity to the river makes it an "ideal place for those who love Boreal forests and canoeing," as highlighted by a satisfied visitor. Accessibility to the campground is generally straightforward, with Ranger Road connecting directly to the main routes through the State Forest. However, potential campers should be aware that while deeply immersed in nature, "the nearby main road was audible at night," which is a small trade-off for its convenience. Despite this, the overwhelming sentiment is that its location within the beautiful pine forest contributes significantly to its charm, making the drive to this serene spot an enjoyable part of the adventure for Wisconsin locals. Its position provides a fantastic base for exploring the wider Brule River State Forest, known for its untouched beauty and recreational opportunities.

Bois Brule Campground, while described as rustic, provides key services that cater to nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts, focusing on fundamental amenities within a pristine setting.

  • Campsites: The campground features a limited number of "small" but well-spaced sites. This allows for privacy among campers, ensuring that "sites are spaced well apart."

  • Walk-in Sites: Specifically, "Couple of sites (7&8) are walk in on the riverbank." These sites offer a more secluded and immersive experience, directly adjacent to the Brule River, appealing to those seeking an authentic wilderness feel.

  • Restrooms: Campers can expect clean facilities, as reviewers noted that "the restrooms were clean." This is a crucial amenity for comfort in a rustic camping environment.

  • Canoe Access: A significant service offered is a designated "place to push you canoe into Brule or pull out." This direct river access is invaluable for canoers and kayakers looking to explore the famed Bois Brule River.

  • Hiking Trails: A "short trail across the old forest over the hill available from this camping" provides immediate hiking opportunities, allowing campers to explore the beautiful Boreal forest on foot without leaving the campground area.

  • Natural Setting: The overall service provided is an experience within a "beautiful campground in a pine forest," making it an ideal spot for those who appreciate natural beauty and quiet.

Bois Brule Campground is celebrated for its distinctive features and highlights that consistently earn it high praise from visitors, positioning it as a standout choice for those seeking a rustic, nature-focused experience in Wisconsin.

  • Stunning Natural Beauty: Repeatedly described as "small, beautiful campground in a pine forest along Brule river," its picturesque setting is a primary draw. The towering pines and the gentle flow of the river create a serene and visually appealing environment.

  • Exceptional Camping Experience: One review boldly states it's "One of the best campgrounds I ever visited," highlighting its unique quality and memorable atmosphere.

  • Direct Brule River Access: A key highlight for paddlers is the dedicated "place to push you canoe into Brule or pull out." This direct, convenient access to the legendary Bois Brule River makes it a prime location for canoeing and kayaking enthusiasts.

  • Immersive Boreal Forest Experience: The campground is explicitly noted as "Ideal place for those who love Boreal forests," offering an authentic immersion into this unique ecosystem with its distinctive flora and fauna.

  • Secluded Walk-in Sites: Sites 7 and 8 are special "walk in on the riverbank" spots. These offer an enhanced sense of seclusion and direct connection to the river, appealing to those seeking a more intimate wilderness experience.

  • Well-Spaced Campsites: Despite being small, the "sites are spaced well apart," ensuring a good degree of privacy and a less crowded feel than larger campgrounds.

  • On-site Hiking Trail: The "short trail across the old forest over the hill available from this camping" provides immediate opportunities for exploration and nature walks right from your campsite.

  • Clean Restrooms: The consistently "clean restrooms" are a practical highlight, contributing significantly to a comfortable and pleasant rustic camping experience.

  • High Demand: The significant challenge of booking a site (as both campgrounds in Brule State Forest are "so good it is difficult to book a site") speaks volumes about its popularity and desirability among experienced campers.

Bois Brule Campground does not explicitly list ongoing "promotions or special offers." Its primary "promotion" is its well-earned reputation as "one of the best campgrounds" and its extremely high demand, making it notoriously "difficult to book a site." This popularity in itself acts as a testament to the value and quality of the experience offered.

The core "offer" for campers at Bois Brule is the opportunity to secure a spot in a highly sought-after, beautiful, and rustic natural setting along the Brule River at standard state forest campground rates. While there aren't discounted bundles or seasonal sales advertised, the unique blend of direct river access for canoeing, immersion in a Boreal pine forest, and well-spaced, clean sites provides exceptional value for the cost. The challenge of booking a site underscores that the quality of the experience is its own most compelling draw, driving intense competition for available spots. For those who manage to secure a reservation, the "promotion" is the rare chance to experience a truly outstanding Wisconsin wilderness camping trip. It's always advisable for interested campers to check the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) website or contact the campground directly for the most current information on rates and any potential booking nuances.

To contact Bois Brule Campground and inquire about availability or specific details for your visit, you can use the following information:

  • Address: 6250 Ranger Rd, Brule, WI 54820, USA

  • Phone: (715) 372-5678

  • Mobile Phone: +1 715-372-5678

Given the high demand for campsites, as noted by reviewers ("difficult to book a site"), it is highly recommended to contact the campground well in advance of your desired visit dates. While a phone call can provide the most immediate information on general availability and any current operational details, you will likely need to go through the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) reservation system to formally book a site, as most state forest campgrounds operate on such a system. Calling first, however, can provide valuable insights into typical booking windows and tips for securing a spot in this popular Wisconsin gem.

Bois Brule Campground is an exceptional choice for Wisconsin locals, perfectly embodying the state's love for rustic charm and pristine natural beauty. For Wisconsinites, this campground offers an accessible yet deeply immersive wilderness experience within the familiar and beloved Brule River State Forest. The appeal of a "small, beautiful campground in a pine forest along Brule river" resonates strongly with those seeking an authentic Northwoods escape without traveling too far from home.

Secondly, the opportunity to hike "across the old forest over the hill" directly from the campsite taps into Wisconsin's strong hiking culture. Thirdly, the "rustic" nature combined with "clean restrooms" strikes the perfect balance for locals who appreciate natural settings but still value basic comforts. Small, beautiful campground in a pine forest along Brule river. One of the best campgrounds I ever visited. Short trail across the old forest over the hill available from this camping, and they have place to push you canoe into Brule or pull out. Couple of sites (7&8) are walk in on the riverbank. Ideal place for those who love Boreal forests and canoeing. The only problem - both campings in Brule State Forest are so good it is difficult to book a site :)

Small rustic campground in the woods beside the river, sites are spaced well apart and the restrooms were clean. The nearby main road was audible at night and the mosquitos chased us away after 1 night

Very peaceful campsites nestled among one of the best rivers for paddling in the state. Pit toilets are kept clean, no showers are on site but after a day of swimming in the river or Lake Superior who needs one. Duluth and Bayfield are small little trips from here and add to the fun.
