  • Spacious Grassy Camping Areas: The campground boasts over 10 acres of level, grassy camping areas, providing ample space for tents and groups. This generous space ensures campers don't feel crowded, even during busier periods.
  • Primitive & Electric Campsites: While many sites are primitive (offering a raw camping experience with fire pits and picnic tables), Cheat Canyon Campground also offers a limited number of 30 Amp electrical service hookups for those requiring power for their RVs or other needs.
  • Clean Portable Toilets (Porta-Pots): The campground is diligent about keeping its portable toilets clean and well-stocked with good quality toilet paper, a highly appreciated detail by visitors.
  • Restrooms and Showers: Basic restroom facilities are available and functional. Showers are also provided, though they may require an additional fee, offering a refreshing option after a day of adventuring. While some facilities might be rustic and lack certain amenities like mirrors or sinks in the immediate vicinity of outhouses, they serve their purpose for campers who don't mind "roughing it" a little.
  • Large Dumpster for Trash: For the convenience of campers, especially during large events like Cheat Fest, a large dumpster is provided for trash disposal, helping maintain the cleanliness of the grounds.
  • Fire Pits & Picnic Tables: Each campsite is equipped with a fire pit for campfires and grilling, along with a picnic table, essential for outdoor dining and gathering around the fire.
  • Firewood Sales: Firewood is available for purchase on-site, ensuring campers can easily maintain their campfires without having to bring their own supply.
  • River Put-In Access: A significant service for whitewater enthusiasts is the ability to "put-in" (launch a boat) directly from your campsite onto the Cheat River, offering unparalleled convenience for river adventures.
  • Pet-Friendly Environment: The campground is welcoming to pets, with friendly resident dogs often adding to the relaxed and welcoming atmosphere.

  • Digital Detox: For those looking to truly disconnect, the limited cell signal (not explicitly stated, but often true in such areas) and focus on outdoor activities provide an excellent opportunity for a digital detox.

Promotions or Special Offers

While Cheat Canyon Campground primarily offers a direct and value-oriented camping experience, specific promotions are often tied to its role as a key location for seasonal events. For the most up-to-date and specific offers, it's always best to contact them directly, as promotions can be dynamic. Based on public information and reviews, here's what West Virginia locals might consider as "promotions" or special value propositions:

  • Cheat Fest Accommodation: The campground's ability to host a large number of campers during Cheat Fest is a significant draw. While prices might adjust for such high-demand periods, the convenience of being able to stay on-site for the entire weekend, with amenities like clean porta-pots and trash disposal during the festival, is a huge value for attendees. In past years, specific rates for the festival weekend have been advertised (e.g., $15 per adult for the entire weekend).
  • Group Rates for Spacious Areas: With over 10 acres of level grassy camping area, Cheat Canyon Campground is well-suited to accommodate large groups. While not explicitly stated as a "promotion," it's highly probable that they offer competitive group rates, making it an excellent option for scout troops, family reunions, or outdoor clubs. Inquire directly for details on booking large spaces.
  • Convenience for Whitewater Enthusiasts: For rafters, kayakers, and canoeists, the ability to put-in directly from the campsite offers unparalleled convenience, saving time and effort on transportation. This direct river access can be seen as a strong "feature-as-promotion" for this specific user group.
  • Off-Season or Mid-Week Savings: Like many campgrounds, Cheat Canyon Campground might offer more competitive rates or greater availability during the quieter off-season or for mid-week stays, providing a more economical option for those with flexible schedules.
  • Friendly, Accommodating Service: While not a discount, the consistently friendly and accommodating nature of the host, Phil, as noted in reviews, adds significant value to the camping experience. Good service can often be as important as a price discount for return visitors.

Amazing campground with tons of space. They kept the porta pots clean and stocked with good quality toilet paper. They also provided a large dumpster for trash during Chest Fest. Amazing place to stay.

This is a small campground, but was very convenient for the Cheat Canyon and Narrows. Phil is a friendly host and his dogs are cute! He allowed us to put-in (on the river) right from our campsite. There's a nice "mountain" view and the trees on the property are pretty. The bathrooms could use a little TLC, but they functioned properly and were 10x better than using a port-a-john. We will definitely stay here again if we are back in the area.

Amazing rate of $5 a night per person. I love going down there and having a riverside access/woodsy site! Being an R1 boater, I don't like long carries to the river and this is so close that I'm happy. Just don't forget to bring quarters for the shower facility which is nice and clean. The hot water works well too. The owners are super friendly. Can't wait to go back!

Very large and spacious campground located on West Virginia's Cheat River. Quiet and plenty of room to stretch out. Amazingly, the campground actually has cellular coverage (T-mobile). The price as of 2020 was $5 a head - - hard to beat. Yes, it's a substantial drive from I-68 but worth it!

Great and inexpensive place to camp - convenient to Cheat River Outfitters white water rafting company (great rafting company by the way). I just finished doing a white water rafting trip with Cheat River Outfitters up the road about 1/2 mile and wanted a place to stay over for the night. Turned out to be a great place. I tent camped for $5 !! How can you beat that? Also nice are the hot showers (pay showers for 1$ but nice and hot) for cleaning up after a rafting trip. There is a nice wide field to camp and also some camp spots down in the tree line near the river for a quite and private spot. the sites have a fire ring and newer picnic tables. the day i was there, there was only me. during the week i imagine it will always be quite. It would be a nice place if you want privacy and not many loud people/campers/RVs. There are showers in the main building and flush toilets. I would have given it 5 stars if the bathrooms were a little more cleaned up - like a few spider webs. ..lthough at 5$ you aren't getting a Holiday Inn spa. Also you do get some road noise from rt26 from crazy truck/rude truck drivers using their engine breaks. but if you are near the river the rushing water blocks out the noise pretty well. It is about 4 minutes down the road from Cheat River Outfitters. Go South on rt26 to Kingwood about a 10 minute drive to find a supermarket, Chinese Buffet, Catholic Church (St Sebastian 10:30 AM Sunday Mass), and a few stores. i would highly recommend this place if you want a very cheap, flush toilet, hot shower, low key, nice camp site, few people palce to camp. Also - a real nice treat up the road about 1-2 miles north on rt26..check out the old blast furnace site ( small road side sign marking the spot) then walk up stream ~20 yds feet - the best coolest water fall cascades that will surprise you.
