Situated on the west edge of Monmouth, adjacent to Citizen's Lake, the campground offers a straightforward approach to outdoor leisure, focusing on essential amenities and a pleasant environment.

The campground caters to a variety of campers, from large RVs to tent enthusiasts. As one detailed reviewer noted, "RV, Auto & pop-up concrete spaces available which will accommodate large RV's. Power & water hook up at each lot... Tent (one night): $15... About 40x40 yards of mowed tent camping space available." This indicates a flexible setup for different camping preferences. The overall sentiment from visitors highlights its value: "All in all a great stay for the money. Stayed rested & clean, felt safe & comfortable."

While acknowledging some external noise due to its proximity to a highway and railroad tracks, the campground's appeal lies in its practicality and the recreational opportunities offered by the lake. It's a no-frills, clean, and well-kept site that delivers on its promise of an affordable and functional base for enjoying the outdoors in Monmouth.

Location and Accessibility

Citizen's Lake Campground is conveniently located in Monmouth, IL 61462, USA. Specifically, it's situated on the west edge of Monmouth, at the intersection of Highway 34/67 Bypass and Highway 164. This strategic positioning makes it highly accessible for travelers and locals alike. Monmouth itself is a city in Warren County, Illinois, known for its small-town appeal and agricultural surroundings.

The campground's direct adjacency to a highway means easy entry and exit, which is a significant advantage for those driving RVs or towing trailers. While this proximity does mean "vehicles, semis & multiple trains thru night," as noted by a reviewer, many campers find the convenience outweighs the occasional noise, especially with modern RV insulation or if they are not light sleepers. The trade-off is excellent accessibility from major routes, making it a practical stopover or destination for various road trips across Illinois.

Furthermore, being located next to Citizen's Lake provides immediate access to fishing and other lake-based activities without additional travel. Its position within Monmouth also means that essential services, groceries, fuel, and local attractions in the city are just a short drive away, adding to the overall convenience for campers during their stay.

  • Accommodates Large RVs: The concrete RV spaces are designed to accommodate large RVs, making it suitable for big rigs that might struggle in more primitive campgrounds.

Promotions or Special Offers

As a city-managed campground, Citizen's Lake Campground primarily operates on a clear, established fee schedule rather than frequent, commercial "promotions." However, there are aspects of its pricing structure and benefits that can be considered valuable "offers" for local users:

  • Reasonable Daily, Weekly, and Monthly Rates: The published rates—$40 for nightly RV sites (with full hookups), $135 weekly, and $450 monthly—offer excellent value, especially for extended stays compared to many private campgrounds. Tent sites are also very affordable at $15 per night.
  • Referral Bonus: The City of Monmouth states, "Anyone who refers someone who stays at our campground will receive a free night's stay during the current season." This is a direct incentive for current campers to spread the word.
  • Discounted Dump Station Use: For those not staying at a site but needing waste disposal, the dump station is available for a reasonable fee ($15).
  • Off-Season Contact for Reservations: While the primary camping season runs from April 1st to October 31st, reservations and questions can be made via a dedicated number during the off-season, offering convenience for early planning.

For the most precise and current information on rates, availability, and any specific policies, it is always recommended to contact the campground directly or visit the City of Monmouth's official website.

We used a tent ground spot, grass (limited tent space/parked vehicle 30' away (see the picture, our tent shows in bottom right corner & our little black car to the far left)). $10 for night, with electric (40'+ extension cord needed) About 40x40 yards of mowed tent camping space available. First come, first serve, no assigned spaces. One charcoal grill & two fire pits in tent area. Had two other tent families nearby, about 10 yards away each (so limited privacy). The more tent campers, the less space to spread out (see photos of tent area). Campgrounds are right off a highway which means vehicles, semis & multiple trains thru night. Light sleepers or campers looking for ONLY sounds of nature will not like this. Lake boardwalk with plenty of cleared ground to access fishing all the way around lake & stocked with fish regularly (see fishing regulations photo). RV, Auto & pop-up concrete spaces available which will accommodate large RV's. Power & water hook up at each lot, price unknown. (limited spaces, unsure of sewage hook up. I did not visit the area but I included photos). Dan (grounds manager) brought a wooden park picnic table to our space, by request. Also he loaned me an extra extension cord, as I was over 20 ft. short. All in all a great stay for the money. Stayed rested & clean, felt safe & comfortable. Not Five Star rated only because I've visited nicer, non-primitive campgrounds.

Nice campground, very well kept, and lake to fish in and kayak on. Prices are reasonable for full hookups. You can stay for a night or two or however long and they also have monthly rates.

This was our 2nd summer staying at Citizen’s Lake Campground. Just a nice relaxing campground. Nice lake for fishing and boating on with electric motor only. They do not rent boats or any water crafts so bring your own. Camp host is great very helpful and polite. Prices are very reasonable for the area. Be sides being close to the high with the noice of the trucks and occasional train whistle, Citizens Lake is a very nice campground. We will be back.

It's loud. It was very, very loud as the semis travel up and down this highway only several yards away. And be mindful of the stink bugs. Those nasty things will find a way into your rv, and you will be dealing with them for days after you leave the park. However, the price is fair for full hook-ups, and the manager, Dan, is a very nice and helpful man.
