Introduction / Overview
For New York residents seeking the ideal blend of rustic tent camping and the convenience of a cozy cabin retreat, the Diehl Cabins/Campsites in Allegany State Park offer a unique and highly desirable destination. Situated in the park's tranquil Quaker Area, Diehl Trail is distinctive as the only mixed loop of cabins and campsites within this vast “wilderness playground of Western New York.” This duality makes it an exceptional choice for groups with mixed preferences—whether you prefer sleeping under canvas next to a creek or having the comfort of a heated, electric-equipped wooden cabin.
Diehl Cabins/Campsites cater to the outdoor enthusiast who appreciates seclusion and a direct connection to nature. The trail sits alongside English Creek, a peaceful feature that enhances the natural ambiance. Reviewers consistently highlight the privacy and spaciousness of the sites. One satisfied camper on a holiday weekend noted, "The best, most spacious & private tent site! Next to the creek at the very end of the trail." The location is highly strategic, offering central access to many of the Quaker Area's most popular attractions, including newly developed bike paths and the trailhead to the famous Bear Caves.
This area truly provides an immersive experience in the Allegheny Highlands forest, attracting visitors with its rolling hills, mature trees, and abundant wildlife. It is the perfect location to disconnect from city life and enjoy the natural splendor that Cattaraugus County is renowned for, all while benefiting from the essential amenities provided by one of New York State's flagship parks.
Location and Accessibility
The Diehl Cabins/Campsites are centrally located within the Quaker Area of Allegany State Park, one of the most beloved natural areas in Western New York. The physical location is nestled on the Diehl Trail, running parallel with ASP 1 and located just east of the Quaker Inn. This prime position places campers and cabin guests in the heart of the Quaker Area’s recreational hub.
The official address for the general area is Salamanca, NY 14779, USA, but specifically, the cabins and campsites are found along the single-loop Diehl Trail. Accessibility for locals across New York is excellent, with the park readily reached via the Southern Tier Expressway (I-86). Travelers should use Exit 18 for direct access to the Quaker Area. This convenience makes Diehl Trail an easy weekend or week-long getaway destination for those in Buffalo, Jamestown, and points east.
Its elevation of approximately 1,491 feet is lower than some of the other campground loops, contributing to its setting nestled along the creek. Crucially, the Diehl loop is a short and pleasant walking distance to the Quaker General Store, the Quaker Rental Office, a museum, and the Quaker Amphitheater—making it arguably one of the most convenient places to stay within the Quaker Area for accessing services and programs.

Stayed on Diehl 21 Memorial Day weekend 2023. The best, most spacious & private tent site! Next to the creek at the very end of the trail. It’s farthest from the bathhouse, but there is a porta potty there (we brought our own). Use the bear box provided to store food & grill. We didn’t see bears but had raccoons trying to open our grill late at night, when we forgot to store it.
Sep 04, 2024 · Lady Lightning98Diehl 1 October 13-16 2023. Great cabin, bathhouses nearby and at one trail head of Bear Caves / Mt. Seneca. We rode bikes 1.4 miles to the trailhead, hiked the trail, then ended at our cabin and picked up the bikes with our vehicle. Next to the new Quaker bike path as well and new bathhouse!
Oct 17, 2023 · Christin SmithThis was the first time I have camped in a tent, we always camped in the cabins. It was very peaceful and beautiful! The trail I was on is not too far from the cabins that we always get. I personally prefer cabins that have a table, cots and a propane stove inside. No need for all the bells and whistles in the newer cabins, I’m trying to take some time away from the rest of the world and disconnect. Camping here does exactly that, allows one to disconnect and decompress for a while. Not much for cell service while I’m the camp grounds but that’s probably for the best anyways. I absolutely recommend trying it out if you want some peace and quiet and can allow yourself to stay away from phones and other electronics for a bit.
Aug 16, 2021 · Rob HIt's a really nice location. Will come back again. Wish the beds in the cabins were just wooden platforms in could put my own camp mattresses on instead of metal bedframes with springs and plastic mattresses. Staff was super quick and helpful when our heat wasn't working.
Mar 27, 2022 · Jody BenedictGood spot for camping during summer and fall! Did the camping last week and it was pretty chilly at night. Would recommend bring extra blanket.
