It's important to note that while Dundo Group Campground is at milepost 83.7, all check-ins for Dundo are handled at the Loft Mountain Campground, located just 3.7 miles north at milepost 79.5. This streamlined process ensures you have access to additional facilities like the Loft Mountain Camp Store. The campground's address, Dundo Group Campground, Crozet, VA 22932, USA, places it within a region renowned for its natural beauty and outdoor activities, ensuring that your journey to this group camping haven is as enjoyable as the stay itself. Its direct access to Skyline Drive means navigating to and from the campground is convenient, allowing for easy exploration of the wider park.
Dundo Group Campground is specifically tailored to meet the needs of larger groups while maintaining a rustic and natural camping experience. While it doesn't offer the full range of amenities found at larger, more developed campgrounds, it provides essential services to ensure a comfortable group outing.
- Group Campsites: Dundo features a limited number of reservable group campsites, typically accommodating between 7 to 20 people per site. Each site is spacious, allowing plenty of room for multiple tents and group activities.
- Picnic Tables: Every campsite is equipped with multiple picnic tables, providing ample space for communal meals and gatherings.
- Fire Rings with Grills: Designated fire rings are available at each site, complete with an adjustable grill rack for cooking over an open fire.
- Vault Toilets: Clean and well-maintained vault toilet facilities are centrally located within the campground and near the picnic area for convenience. Visitors often commend the cleanliness of these facilities.
- Potable Water: Accessible water pumps or spigots are available, providing potable water for drinking and other needs.
- Food Storage Boxes (Bear Boxes): To protect both campers and wildlife, secure food storage boxes are provided at each site, essential for storing food and scented items to deter bears and other animals.
- Parking: Each group site typically offers parking for up to five vehicles, making it convenient for multiple cars traveling together.
- Trash Disposal: Designated trash disposal areas are available, ensuring campers can properly dispose of their waste without having to transport it out of the park.
- Proximity to Loft Mountain Facilities: While Dundo itself is primitive, the nearby Loft Mountain Campground (just 3.7 miles north) offers additional services during its operating season, including a camp store (for firewood, ice, groceries, and camping supplies), coin-operated showers, and laundry facilities.
What truly sets Dundo Group Campground apart for Virginia residents is its unique focus on providing a private and immersive outdoor experience specifically for groups.
- Private Group Setting: As the reviews attest, Dundo offers an "excellent, private campground for groups." This dedicated group setting allows for a more intimate and focused experience without the distractions of individual campers nearby.
- Direct Appalachian Trail Access: A significant highlight for hikers, the Appalachian Trail passes directly through the Dundo Group Campground site. This provides unparalleled access for group day hikes or as a strategic stop for those tackling longer sections of the famous trail.
- Base Camp for Exploration: Dundo serves as an excellent base camp for group activities, offering easy access to a variety of popular hikes in the Shenandoah National Park's South District, including trails leading to Doyles River Falls and opportunities to explore the Big Run Wilderness.
- Shaded, Grassy Sites: The three reservable group campsites are large, grassy, and shaded by native oaks and mature pines, providing a comfortable and natural setting for your group's tents and activities.
- No RV Hookups (Tent-Only Focus): The absence of electric hookups ensures a more traditional and less intrusive camping experience, perfect for groups seeking to truly disconnect and enjoy the wilderness. While RVs are prohibited, the sites are spacious enough for multiple large tents.
- Close to Scenic Skyline Drive: Located directly on Skyline Drive, the campground offers immediate access to the park's iconic scenic overlooks, providing stunning vistas for sunrise and sunset viewings.
- Wildlife Viewing: Shenandoah National Park is known for its abundant wildlife. Campers at Dundo may have opportunities to observe deer, wild turkeys, and various bird species in their natural habitat. Proper food storage is key to coexisting with the park's black bear population.
As a National Park Service campground, Dundo Group Campground generally operates on a fixed fee schedule for its reservable group sites. Therefore, you won't typically find specific seasonal "promotions" in the commercial sense. However, there are considerations that can make a group trip to Dundo a cost-effective and valuable experience for Virginians:
- Fixed Group Rate: The campground typically charges a flat rate per night for a group site, regardless of the number of individuals within the allowed range (e.g., 7-20 people). This can be a very economical option when splitting the cost among a larger party, making it more affordable per person than multiple individual campsites.
- National Park Passes: While the standard National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass covers entrance fees to Shenandoah National Park, it does not typically cover camping fees. However, passes like the Senior Pass (for U.S. citizens/permanent residents aged 62+) or the Access Pass (for U.S. citizens/permanent residents with permanent disabilities) may offer discounts on camping fees at federal recreation sites, which could potentially apply to group campsite reservations. It is always advisable to confirm these details directly with the park or through Recreation.gov.
- Value of Shared Experience: The inherent value of group camping at a dedicated site like Dundo often outweighs the direct financial "promotions." The ability to share resources, stories, and the beauty of Shenandoah National Park collectively creates a priceless experience that's highly valued by visitors.
For the most current information on reservation fees and policies, it is always recommended to check the official Shenandoah National Park website or the Recreation.gov booking platform.

Customer Reviews
Very nice as always, great get away spot
Excellent, private campground for groups
Good place to get water and rest along the AT
Loved this camping grounds!! Good times!!
The site was fantastic! It was plenty big enough for our group and very affordable! There was running (nonpotable) water, a nice bathroom facility and it wasn't too far from the bath houses. The only downside, was nothing to do with the site itself, but with the "neighbors" who decided to show up at 11pm, then set up a super high powered led light strip that was bright enough to make it seem like midday at 3am. They completely ruined any plans for stargazing in the mountains. I only include that to say to other possible campers to be respectful of people around you that are sharing the outdoors with you.
