Introduction / Overview

Loft Mountain Campground is the largest campground situated within the breathtaking Shenandoah National Park, positioned near Crozet, VA. This expansive campground offers a quintessential national park camping experience, emphasizing immersion in nature while providing key comforts. Located at approximately milepost 79.5 on the famous Skyline Drive in the southern section of the park, Loft Mountain sits atop Big Flat Mountain, granting campers sweeping vistas of both the Shenandoah Valley to the west and the Virginia Piedmont to the east.

The campground features a total of 207 campsites, accommodating both tents and RVs (though without electric or water hookups at individual sites). It is particularly popular for its spacious sites that often offer a sense of privacy amidst the natural setting. The design of the campground, with various loops, allows for different levels of seclusion and accessibility to facilities. Visitors frequently commend the cleanliness of the facilities and the overall well-maintained nature of the park, highlighting a commitment to guest satisfaction and environmental stewardship.

Loft Mountain is ideal for campers seeking a traditional outdoor experience where the focus is on natural beauty, hiking, wildlife viewing, and stargazing, rather than extensive resort-style amenities. Its strategic location within Shenandoah National Park provides direct access to some of the park's most renowned trails and scenic overlooks, making it a perfect base for exploration and adventure in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Location and Accessibility

Loft Mountain Campground is nestled within Shenandoah National Park, with its address often associated with Crozet, VA 22932, USA. More precisely, it is located at approximately Milepost 79.5 along the iconic Skyline Drive, which traverses the entire length of Shenandoah National Park. This placement makes it particularly accessible to residents across Virginia and beyond, serving as a gateway to the park's southern district.

For Virginians, accessing Loft Mountain Campground typically involves driving on Skyline Drive. The park has several entrances, but for Loft Mountain, the Rockfish Gap Entrance (where Skyline Drive meets I-64 near Waynesboro and Afton) is the closest. This entrance is highly convenient for those traveling from central Virginia cities like Charlottesville or Richmond, or from points west in the Shenandoah Valley. While the drive along Skyline Drive itself is a scenic experience, visitors should account for the park's speed limits and the winding nature of the road when planning their travel time.

The location on a mountain top ensures not only breathtaking views but also cooler temperatures, which can be a welcome relief during warmer months. Despite its secluded feel, the campground is not isolated, with services and attractions along Skyline Drive being within a reasonable driving distance. Its integration into a national park means that while it feels wild, it is supported by park infrastructure, ensuring a balance of wilderness immersion and necessary accessibility for campers.

Promotions or Special Offers

As a campground operating within Shenandoah National Park, Loft Mountain Campground's pricing and any potential "promotions" are generally tied to the National Park Service (NPS) fee structure and specific federal recreation pass programs, rather than typical commercial discounts. These are designed to make park access and camping affordable for various groups.

  • Federal Recreation Passes: Visitors holding an America the Beautiful – The National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass (e.g., Annual Pass, Senior Pass, Access Pass, Military Pass) often receive discounted rates on individual campsites. For example, the Senior Pass can significantly reduce the nightly camping fee (e.g., "With senior pass only $15 per night," as noted in a review, compared to a standard rate of around $30).
  • Off-Peak Season Rates: While not a formal promotion, camping fees might be slightly lower during the shoulder seasons (early spring or late fall) compared to the peak summer and early fall foliage periods, reflecting lower demand. It's always advisable to check Recreation.gov for exact pricing based on your desired dates.
  • First-Come, First-Served Availability: A portion of sites at Loft Mountain Campground are available on a first-come, first-served basis. While not a promotion, arriving early during weekdays or shoulder seasons might secure a spot when reservable sites are fully booked, effectively giving you access when others might not have it.
  • Park Entrance Fee: Remember that in addition to camping fees, there is a separate entrance fee for Shenandoah National Park. Having an annual pass for the park or the federal recreation pass can cover this fee for frequent visitors.

To confirm current rates, available discounts, and to make reservations, it is essential to visit the official Recreation.gov website for Loft Mountain Campground or the Shenandoah National Park website. I had a great time camping there. It was cold. The sky was clear. I’m definitely coming back. My spot was right near the restroom so I was happy. The park was clean, of course! I’m only sad that they close on one December for campers. I’m definitely going back.

Our tent site, E144, at Loft Mountain Campground was perfect for a few nights away. There was a bathroom just a few sites down either way from the site with trash located at the end of the road. The site was flat with enough room for our large tent. The bear box provided was great to store our items but we did choose to keep our food in the car. We brought jugs of water since water wasn’t available at the site. The site was more secluded than others and had easy access to the car. Waking up to deer, rabbits and birds every morning was amazing and the stars and sunsets were beautiful. The showers are a walk or drive away and are $5 for a 10-minute shower. The showers are coin operated so bring quarters or dollars to change into coins. There’s a store onsite for essentials and wood. We spent our days on the go so didn’t check out much around the campground but enjoyed our mornings and evenings here. This campground is the southernmost in the park. It was nice when accessing from the south but did require a lot of driving each day to reach other areas of the park.

Awesome campground! Loved our A56 spot. On-site access to the AT and other trails. Def hike the trails as their viewpoints are often more amazing than the skyline's overlooks. Being here during peak color in October is the cherry on top!

Employees are very helpful & nice at loft mountain campground. Lots of nature. We saw Chipmunks deer & owls. This campground has apple trees. If you camp next to an apple tree you will see lots of deer. Some sights have mountain views. Very kid friendly campground. Lots of families bring their kids here. My kids love making new friends.
