FamCamp is located at 4520 Wheeling Rd, Clinton, MD 20735, USA. This address places it conveniently within Clinton, Maryland, making it a relatively accessible option for authorized patrons residing in the greater Washington D.C. metropolitan area and throughout Maryland. Being situated near Joint Base Andrews, FamCamp's location offers proximity to military facilities and resources, which is a key aspect of its appeal for its intended user base.

For local users, accessibility to FamCamp is generally straightforward. The campground is situated off major roadways in Clinton, allowing for relatively easy navigation by vehicle. For those traveling from various parts of Maryland, the road networks provide direct routes to the Clinton area. This makes FamCamp a feasible destination for weekend getaways or even longer stays for authorized individuals and families looking for a local camping experience without extended travel.

It is crucial to emphasize that FamCamp is a military campground. This means that access and usage are typically restricted to active-duty military personnel, retired military personnel, reservists, Department of Defense civilians, and other authorized patrons. While its physical location is accessible within Maryland, its operational accessibility is defined by these specific eligibility requirements. Local users considering FamCamp must verify their eligibility status before planning a visit. This ensures that the campground caters to its designated community while maintaining its operational integrity. The direct nature of its location, combined with its specialized access, defines its unique position as a local camping resource within Maryland for the military community.

FamCamp, as a military campground, typically offers a range of services designed to support the camping needs of its authorized patrons. While the specific condition and availability of services can vary, the general offerings are intended to provide a functional camping environment.

  • RV Sites: FamCamp is primarily set up to accommodate recreational vehicles (RVs). These sites typically include electric hookups (e.g., 30-amp and 50-amp connections) and water hookups. The provision of these utilities is standard for most RV campgrounds, allowing campers to power their vehicles and access potable water.
  • Dump Station: A common service at RV parks, a dump station allows RVers to empty their wastewater tanks (grey and black water) before departing. This is an essential service for self-contained RVs.
  • Restrooms and Showers: While reviews indicate potential issues with maintenance, campgrounds generally aim to provide communal restroom and shower facilities for the convenience of all campers, including those in tents or RVs without full onboard facilities.
  • Picnic Tables: Most campsites, whether for RVs or tents, are typically equipped with picnic tables for outdoor dining and gathering.
  • Grill/Fire Rings: Many campsites also include a grill or fire ring, allowing campers to cook outdoors or enjoy a campfire, provided local regulations and burn bans are observed.
  • Proximity to Base Amenities: A significant service of FamCamp, by virtue of its affiliation, is its proximity to the resources of Joint Base Andrews. Authorized patrons can typically access base facilities such as commissaries, Exchanges (PX/BX), fitness centers, and potentially medical services or family support programs, depending on base policies and individual eligibility. This integrated access to military community resources is a defining feature.

FamCamp in Clinton, MD, while providing a unique camping opportunity for authorized patrons, has received feedback regarding specific aspects of its features and overall presentation. Understanding these points is crucial for anyone considering a stay.

  • Military Affiliation and Access: A primary feature of FamCamp is its status as a military campground. This means it offers camping opportunities exclusively to active-duty service members, retired personnel, reservists, Department of Defense civilians, and other authorized users. This specialized access creates a community environment tailored to military families and individuals. This can be seen as a positive for those who are part of this community, offering a familiar and secure environment.
  • RV Focused: The campground is largely set up to accommodate recreational vehicles, with sites typically featuring electrical and water hookups. This makes it a suitable option for those who own or rent RVs and are looking for a place to park and connect their utilities.
  • Proximity to Joint Base Andrews: A significant highlight for many authorized users is the campground's proximity to Joint Base Andrews. This allows convenient access to base amenities such as the commissary, Exchange, gas stations, and potentially other recreational facilities, which can be a considerable benefit for those accustomed to using these services.
  • Natural Surroundings (Potential for Improvement): While located in a natural setting, some reviews have noted challenges with the maintenance of the grounds. Specifically, comments have mentioned "grass is literally over a foot tall or more in areas everywhere" and "standing water all around the pad." This indicates that while the potential for a natural, green environment exists, its upkeep can impact the overall aesthetic and usability.
  • Noise Considerations: Feedback has indicated that the campground can be "extremely noisy due to road next to camp ground." This suggests that campers should be prepared for potential road noise, which might affect the tranquility of the stay, especially for those sensitive to sound.
  • Basic Infrastructure: While services like picnic tables are generally available, reviews have indicated that they might be "falling apart." Similarly, issues like "pot holes are everywhere" suggest that the physical infrastructure of the campground might require significant attention and updates to meet contemporary standards.
  • Customer Service: Some interactions with the Outdoor Recreation office staff have been described as "rudest" and "passive aggressive." While individual experiences can vary, this feedback highlights a potential area for improvement in customer service, which is a key component of any recreational facility.

Given FamCamp's nature as a military-affiliated campground, promotions or special offers are typically managed through official military recreation programs and are usually tied to specific eligibility criteria. Unlike commercial campgrounds that might offer seasonal discounts to the general public, FamCamp's pricing and any potential special rates are generally regulated by the Department of Defense Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) initiatives.

Therefore, direct, publicly advertised "promotions" in the traditional sense may not be consistently available or widely broadcast outside of official military channels. However, authorized patrons (active duty, retired military, DoD civilians, etc.) often benefit from:

  • Affordable Rates: The primary "offer" for authorized users is generally the provision of camping at rates that are typically more affordable than comparable commercial campgrounds. MWR facilities are designed to support military quality of life, and this often translates into subsidized or lower-cost recreational opportunities.
  • Long-Term Stay Options: Some military campgrounds, including potentially FamCamp, may offer discounted rates for extended stays (e.g., weekly or monthly rates), though this varies by facility and demand. These would not be "promotions" in the short-term sense but rather structured pricing for longer visits.
  • Seasonal MWR Events: While not a direct camping promotion, patrons of FamCamp, due to their affiliation, would have access to other MWR programs and events on Joint Base Andrews. These might include special holiday events, recreational classes, or family activities that could indirectly enhance the overall value of their stay.

To inquire about specific rates, availability, or any potential MWR-related offers for FamCamp, authorized users should contact the Outdoor Recreation office directly using the provided contact information. It is always best practice to confirm pricing and any relevant policies at the time of booking, as these can be subject to change.

For authorized local users in Maryland, FamCamp in Clinton offers a distinct camping option, particularly for those affiliated with the military community. Its primary suitability stems from its dedicated service to military personnel and their families, providing a familiar and accessible recreational outlet within the region. If you are an active-duty service member, a veteran, or a DoD civilian, FamCamp offers a localized opportunity to engage in outdoor activities without the need for extensive travel outside of Maryland.

The campground’s proximity to Joint Base Andrews is a significant advantage, allowing easy access to base amenities such as shopping, dining, and other recreational facilities that are already part of many military families' routines. This integration with base resources can make a camping trip feel more convenient and connected, providing a sense of community and security that might be appealing to its specific user base. For RV owners within this demographic, the availability of hookup sites means a comfortable and convenient base for exploring the local Maryland area or simply enjoying a close-to-home getaway.

However, it’s also important for locals to set realistic expectations based on available public feedback, particularly regarding maintenance and noise levels. While FamCamp provides a valuable service to its community, understanding that the experience might lean towards a more utilitarian rather than a pristine or secluded natural escape is key. For those who prioritize affordability, convenience of location near military facilities, and the unique community aspect that military campgrounds offer, FamCamp serves as a functional and accessible local camping solution within Maryland. It provides an opportunity to enjoy the outdoors and utilize MWR benefits right in their own backyard.

We have stayed at numerous military campgrounds and this BY FAR is the most run down, over grown and rudest Outdoor Rec office staff we have encountered. The grass is literally over a foot tall or more in areas everywhere. Picnic table falling apart, water being shut off without notification, staff in office very passive aggressive when asked basic questions. When checking in, I very politely asked when the grass would be cut and response was “Sir, it’s been raining. We can’t cut the grass in the rain.” By the length of the grass, it has not been cut in an VERY long time! Extremely noisy due to road next to camp ground. This campground is a disgrace.

RV spots are concrete pads, area is spacious, FHU was $45. Many empty spots. Two washers($1.50) and two dryers($1). All of them worked well. Kids enjoyed doing a puzzle and playing with a mousetrap boardgame thats available in TV lounge. However the TV lounge has a lot of cobweb and dust. Pool table had no balls and covered in spiderwebs. Water heater in laundry room is spilling water. Toilets and showers were disgusting. There was trash on our site. Huge garbage bag in fire pit and grass growing in another. Water was leaking from the spigot in the empty campsite next to us. Campground is not taken care of.

Upon arrival the park seems overgrown and outdated. There are clear signs and directives posted. The sites are overgrown and not well maintained. Outside of the concrete pad the sites are overgrown and not campchair friendly even around the sites fire pits. The area is dog friendly however the dog park is very small and mostly accommodating to smaller dogs. The general bathrooms and laundry rooms have spiders. The perks of the camping area is its closeness to the base and surrounding areas. There are no kids playgrounds located in the area.

I like the concrete pad... thats the highlight of this place. Restrooms are gross and outdated. Laundry room is dirty, gross and outdated. Getting to try and check in is ridiculous. For $45 a night I expected better.
