Forbes Motorized Campsite #5 About
For Pennsylvanians who truly appreciate the rugged beauty of our state's forests and seek a more primitive, yet accessible, camping experience, Forbes Motorized Campsite #5 offers a unique opportunity within the vast expanse of Forbes State Forest. This isn't your typical crowded campground with paved roads and extensive amenities; instead, it provides a chance to connect with nature in a more secluded setting, where the sounds of the forest replace the hum of daily life. If you're looking to explore the Laurel Highlands and embrace a self-sufficient outdoor adventure, this designated roadside campsite could be your perfect basecamp.
Forbes State Forest, encompassing over 60,000 acres across the Laurel Highlands, is a treasure trove of natural beauty and recreational opportunities. Motorized campsites, like Site #5, are part of the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) system, designed for those who want to camp with their vehicle nearby for convenience, yet still desire a rustic experience. These sites are distinct from developed campgrounds, offering a more dispersed and less facilitated environment.
While some campers might note its proximity to a road, as one reviewer mentioned, "A bit close to the road, but plenty of room and convenient to trails and Laurel Highlands State Park," it's important to understand the nature of motorized roadside campsites. They are, by definition, accessible by vehicle, providing a balance between convenience and seclusion. Another review highlighted that "the site is fairly large with plenty of tent sites," indicating ample space for your setup. The charm of Forbes Motorized Campsite #5 lies in its raw appeal – a place where you bring your own comforts and immerse yourself in the forest, all while having your vehicle within reach for supplies or quick access to the myriad trails and attractions that surround it.
Forbes Motorized Campsite #5 is located in a part of Forbes State Forest near Rockwood, PA 15557, USA, with the approximate coordinates XPJ4+PC. This strategic placement within the sprawling Forbes State Forest positions campers in the heart of the picturesque Laurel Highlands region of southwestern Pennsylvania. The address, while a general indicator, points to a location that prioritizes access to the vast forest lands rather than immediate urban conveniences.
Accessibility to motorized campsites in state forests generally involves navigating dirt and gravel roads. For Forbes Motorized Campsite #5 specifically, access is typically via state forest roads that are maintained but can vary in condition, especially during different seasons or after inclement weather. Visitors should be prepared for potentially unpaved surfaces.
One of the key advantages of this campsite's location, as highlighted by visitors, is its "convenient to trails and Laurel Highlands State Park." This means that despite its rustic nature, campers at Site #5 are well-positioned to explore a wide array of outdoor activities. Laurel Highlands State Park, known for its extensive hiking trail, is easily reachable, offering countless opportunities for day hikes and exploration. The overall remote feel of the site, despite its relative proximity to a road, ensures that campers are immersed in the natural environment, providing a true escape into the Pennsylvania wilderness. When planning your trip, it's always advisable to consult detailed maps from the PA DCNR and consider vehicle suitability for gravel forest roads.
It is crucial to understand that Forbes Motorized Campsite #5 is a designated primitive, roadside campsite within a state forest, and as such, it offers very limited services compared to a developed state park campground. The emphasis here is on self-sufficiency and a rustic outdoor experience.
- Designated Campsite: The site is officially designated and managed by the Pennsylvania DCNR for motorized, roadside camping, requiring a permit for use.
- Fire Ring: Each motorized campsite typically includes a fire ring, allowing for campfires (when permitted and with precautions) for cooking and warmth.
- Picnic Table: A picnic table is generally provided at the site for convenient outdoor dining and gathering.
- Vehicle Access: As a "motorized" campsite, you can park your vehicle very near or directly at your campsite, providing easy access for gear and shelter.
- Permitted Camping Period: These sites are generally available for camping from April 2 to the last day of regular rifle deer season, requiring reservations through the PA DCNR.
- Pet-Friendly: Pets are typically permitted on State Forest land if kept under control and attended to at all times, with proper waste disposal required.
It is important to note what is not offered at these primitive state forest campsites, as outlined by the PA DCNR:
- No Developed Facilities: There are no modern conveniences, developed facilities, or other improvements.
- No Electric Hookups: There are no electrical connections for RVs or other equipment.
- No Water Hookups: Campers must bring their own water, as there are no potable water sources at the site.
- No Sewer Hookups or Dump Stations: There are no facilities for waste disposal from RVs or trailers.
- No Restrooms/Toilets: Campers are responsible for their own sanitation, often requiring the use of portable toilets or adherence to Leave No Trace principles for waste disposal (at least 200 feet from water sources and buried at least six inches).
- No Trash Disposal: All campsites are carry-in, carry-out. Campers must be prepared to take all their trash and refuse with them when they leave.
- Limited or No Cell Phone Coverage: Communication can be unreliable due to the remote nature of state forest lands.
- No Routine Maintenance: Campsites may not receive routine maintenance, meaning campers should be prepared for a natural, undeveloped setting.
This type of camping is ideal for those who are prepared to be self-sufficient and embrace a truly wild experience, rather than those seeking campground amenities.
- Rustic and Primitive Camping Experience: This is a major highlight for outdoor enthusiasts. Forbes Motorized Campsite #5 offers a genuinely undeveloped camping experience, allowing campers to truly disconnect and immerse themselves in nature, away from the crowds and conveniences of traditional campgrounds.
- Direct Vehicle Access: As a motorized campsite, the ability to park your vehicle directly at or very near your campsite is a significant convenience for bringing in gear and supplies, offering a base camp for further exploration.
- Ample Space: Reviews indicate the site is "fairly large with plenty of tent sites," suggesting ample room for multiple tents and setting up a comfortable camp.
- Proximity to Extensive Trails: The campsite's location is "convenient to trails," including connections to the vast network within Forbes State Forest and the renowned Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail, offering excellent opportunities for hiking, backpacking, and other outdoor pursuits.
- Gateway to Laurel Highlands State Park: Being close to Laurel Highlands State Park provides access to its unique features and recreational activities, enhancing the overall experience for campers.
- Secluded Forest Environment: Despite potentially being near a road, the site is within a forested area, offering a sense of seclusion and the chance to enjoy the peace and quiet of the woods.
- Wildlife Viewing Opportunities: The diverse ecosystem of Forbes State Forest means opportunities for observing local wildlife, enhancing the natural experience.
- Stargazing: Away from city lights, the campsite offers excellent conditions for stargazing on clear nights.
- Permit-Based Access: The requirement to reserve through PA DCNR ensures some level of management and prevents overcrowding, contributing to a more controlled and enjoyable experience.
As Forbes Motorized Campsite #5 is a state forest campsite managed by the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR), it does not typically offer commercial "promotions" or "special offers" in the way a private campground might. State forest campsites are designed to provide affordable, accessible outdoor recreation for the public, with a standardized fee structure.
However, the inherent "offer" of these sites lies in their cost-effectiveness and the unique, primitive experience they provide. The reservation fee for a motorized campsite like Site #5 is generally low, making it a very affordable option for overnight stays compared to many private campgrounds. Reservations can be made online through the Pennsylvania State Parks and Forests Reservation website or by calling 888-PA-PARKS.
While there aren't traditional discounts, the value of camping at Forbes Motorized Campsite #5 comes from:
- Affordable Access: Providing a budget-friendly way to camp in a designated, managed forest setting.
- Direct Access to Nature: The "offer" is the direct, unadulterated access to Forbes State Forest's natural beauty and extensive trail systems, which would otherwise require more complex arrangements for primitive camping.
- Guaranteed Spot: Reserving a site ensures you have a designated area, which can be valuable, especially during peak seasons for other types of outdoor activities in the region.
Campers should always check the official PA DCNR website or the reservation portal for the most current fee schedules and any operational updates. Any "special" conditions would likely relate to seasonal fire bans, hunting seasons, or specific DCNR announcements affecting state forest use, rather than price reductions.

This campsite is particularly appealing to local residents who are self-sufficient and value a more rustic camping style. It’s for those who appreciate the quiet solitude of the forest, the simple pleasures of a campfire under the stars, and the thrill of waking up surrounded by nature, rather than the amenities of a resort. Pennsylvanians can use Site #5 as a base for endless hiking, exploring the diverse flora and fauna of the region, or simply enjoying the peaceful forest environment. Customer Reviews
Reserve through PA DCNR. A bit close to the road, but plenty of room and convenient to trails and Laurel Highlands State Park
This campsite ranks very low, 5 of 6, in comparison to the motorized campsites I've been to. The problem is that it's only about 25 meters from the road and even with vegetation you're visible. Overall the site is fairly large with plenty of tent sites. If they would put this spot another 25 meters into the woods things would be much better.
Very secluded spot, close to the road but only saw 1 truck in 3 days,
Mostly a flat site. Quiet.
Beautiful surroundings. Quiet.
