Maine locals are fortunate to have access to some of the most stunning and unique coastal experiences in the United States, and Fortland, located on historic House Island in Casco Bay, stands out as a true gem. This destination isn't just a place to pitch a tent; it’s an immersive, 'glamping' style retreat and event venue set directly within the grounds of the Civil War-era Fort Scammel. Fortland offers an opportunity to unplug and reconnect with nature and history, all while enjoying panoramic views of Portland Harbor and the surrounding Calendar Islands. It provides a quick escape that feels a world away from the mainland hustle, making it a perfect spot for Mainers seeking a refreshing, yet convenient, island adventure.
The experience at Fortland is thoughtfully curated to blend the natural beauty of the Maine coast with the fascinating military history of Fort Scammel. Visitors are invited to explore 16 pristine acres, including three private beaches and walking trails, all while residing in beautifully furnished accommodations. The emphasis here is on intentionality—from the sustainable practices used on the island, such as solar power packs for charging devices and composting toilet outhouses, to the preservation efforts applied to the 40,000 square feet of historic architecture. For those seeking quiet walks on the beach, time alone with someone special, or a chance to explore a genuine historical site, Fortland delivers an exceptional, memorable stay.
The concept of Fortland was born from a vision to steward and preserve Fort Scammel and the surrounding ecology while increasing accessibility for visitors. The result is a family-run business that focuses on fostering a sense of discovery and providing a restorative outdoor experience. Real customer feedback highlights the success of this vision, noting the "exceptional" accommodations, the accommodating staff, and the island's capacity to be the "perfect place" to unplug and relax. Exploring the fort itself, especially with a guided tour, is repeatedly mentioned as a must-do part of the experience, offering a captivating glimpse into one of Portland Harbor’s most storied defenses.

We were looking for a place to unplug and simply relax. Fortland was the perfect place. No difficulties arriving and settling in, staff very accommodating, and accommodations were exceptional. The fort and the island is great place to explore and Stefan's tour of the fort is something you don't want to miss. If you like quiet walks on the beach and time alone with someone special don't miss this place. Will we return.
Sep 19, 2025 · Ronald LagueI planned an overnight at Fortland as a surprise for our one year wedding anniversary, and it did not disappoint. It was our favorite part of our trip to the New England states. Everything is very well thought out and very well maintained. We had a great time from the moment we arrived until we left. We explored the fort and the beaches. Our biggest regret was only staying one night!
Sep 22, 2025 · Amanda GrimWe so enjoyed our recent trip to Fortland. It truly is a magical place. The staff were super friendly, welcoming and knowledgeable which made our stay even better. The beaches were beautiful and scenic. We loved finding so much sea glass. Exploring the forts and tunnels was an amazing experience. Fortland is definitely a hidden gem and well worth the visit. We can't wait to visit again. The Rodman Family
Sep 02, 2025 · Theresa Barros-RodmanWe visited Fortland as part of a boat tour of the bay, and getting a tour from Stefan, the owner, was a real treat. His passion for the place is contagious; it’s amazing to see something so old and historic brought back to life in such a creative way. We didn’t stay overnight, but the setup looked like it would be a memorable place to camp or host an event. Definitely one of the cooler and more unexpected things we did in Portland.
Sep 02, 2025 · Len MWe had a wonderful stay at Fortland over the Fourth of July weekend. The yurt was clean, comfortable, and beautifully furnished. There was a lot to do by way of exploring the island, collecting sea glass, and swimming. The evening bonfire and s'mores were a perfect way to end a beautiful day. We hope to visit again!
