Introduction / Overview
The Freeport / Durham KOA Holiday, nestled in the scenic town of Durham, Maine, has earned its reputation as a premier family-friendly camping destination in the Midcoast region. This expansive 50-acre campground is more than just a place to park your RV or pitch a tent; it is a vibrant, well-managed community that serves as the perfect basecamp for exploring the best of Southern and Midcoast Maine. Located just a short 6-mile drive from the famous shopping and attractions of Freeport, including the flagship L.L.Bean store, the KOA offers a refreshing blend of outdoor tranquility and convenient access to local commerce and attractions.
What truly sets this KOA Holiday apart is its commitment to family fun and exceptional guest experiences. The management—described by guests as a "family" that puts their "hearts and souls" into the operation—ensures the entire camp, from the cozy cabins to the well-maintained bathhouses, is clean and welcoming. Visitors frequently rave about the organized and highly creative themed weekends, which often feature elaborate, wholesome entertainment like their famed off-season Halloween night. Whether you prefer a secluded, wooded site for a back-to-nature feel or an open, fully-hooked-up pull-thru for your large RV, the campground provides diverse options designed for comfort and convenience.
While the setting is largely peaceful and offers beautiful natural features, local users should be aware of nearby industrial activity. Some sites, particularly in the B-section, are near a quarry or similar operation, which can generate noise, such as construction beeping, starting at 7:00 AM on weekdays. Prospective campers looking for absolute quiet during the week may prefer to inquire about specific site locations or plan their stay for the weekend when this noise is less likely to be an issue, ensuring a completely relaxing Maine getaway.

Accessibility is a major highlight. Gotta say, I was blown away with this camp. We stayed In a cabin, which really helped manage two kids. The cabin was clean, cozy and comfortable. The whole camp itself was clean, well managed and friendly. The bathrooms were clean and well maintained. The pool was clean and had a really cool slide. Above all else, we were there for their off season Halloween night… what an absolute treat. The people (I should say family) who ran this really put their hearts and souls into the very fun performance; it was hilarious, wholesome and had a nice light scare to it. I really applauded them for going the extra mile to entertain the families with something fun. Really left a great impression on me, and I can’t wait to go back. I’ll never forget “Stinky Pete”, who “smells worse than a north-bound skunk” If you’re wondering if you’ll like this place, you won’t, you’ll love it.
Aug 07, 2025 · Aaron GroverThis is a really nice KOA. My only complaint is that we are next to a sand quarry or something and there is incessant industrial beeping that starts at 7am sharp and apparently continues all day. The campground itself is nice with nice lodging options and clean bath houses. I’m looking forward to an upcoming trip here on a weekend and hopefully won’t have to listen to loud high pitched beeping all day. I would not come back during the week for this reason. If it’s something that happens on weekends as well, I likely won’t be back. It’s just not relaxing to hear construction noise all day. Staff are nice. Gift shop is adorable… it’s unfortunate that it’s not peaceful during day.
Jul 23, 2025 · Melynda WilhelmiLarge KOA campsite We got a site in the woods that was dirty with dog droppings and it took a while until we got a response from the office and we moved to another open site but clean and quiet. There is a quarry next to the campsite so in the morning you hear the beep beep of the heavy equipment, not very disturbing. Overall for overnight parking with a caravan it was fine
Aug 02, 2025 · זמיר כרמיMy experience with Freeport/ Durham KOA spans nearly three decades of week-long stays for family reunions. We have witnessed the gradual deterioration of the campground over the years and experienced less than pleasant stays due to management decisions. Regardless, we would return again because of tradition and location. This time, however, we will not be going back. The campground has too many issues now that overshadow the great location. From bed bugs in the cabins to shoddy tile work in the showers (how many years now has the tile saw been sitting out behind the showers, btw) They are kind enough, however, to leave a floor squeegee out for you so that you can move the water out of your way - or you can wade through it, if you prefer. When you drive into the campground, you now drive down what we call "skid row". Permanent campers off the main drive that look more like a trailer park than a campground. The owner/manager, Bob, never misses an opportunity to fly off the handle. This year, he really outdid himself by interrupting our reunion festivities by complaining to us that someone from our group of 200 people had parked their car in the wrong spot. He caused a scene with his boisterous righteous indignation and left everyone puzzled and curious about which of us was guilty of this felonious act. As it turned out, it wasn't anyone from our group at all. But did Bob offer an apology? Of course not. Hey, managing a big campground isn't easy. I get it. But this place lost it's luster a long time ago and it's only getting worse. The cabin bed bugs infested luggage and clothing and children were riddled with bites.
Aug 01, 2025 · A WittStayed here for a week while the grand went to LLBean camp. Nice location with full hookup. Spacious site, great weekend activities for kids, pool, bingo, etc. only down was dust because it was so dry. Oh, there is a farm with horses and a donkey adjacent to the campground. Grandson loved the donkey
