Introduction / Overview: Your Central Maine Outdoor Hub
Bradbury Mountain State Park Campground, located in Pownal, Maine, offers local residents a quintessential Maine outdoor experience with an added layer of convenience and comfort. As one of the state’s five original state parks, Bradbury Mountain holds a special place in Maine’s recreational history, offering over 800 acres of beautiful forested land sculpted by ancient glaciers. The campground is designed for both the casual camper and the dedicated outdoor enthusiast, providing a peaceful, rustic atmosphere while ensuring access to notably clean and well-maintained modern amenities.
Campers frequently praise the facility’s commitment to cleanliness, especially highlighting the spotless condition of the bathrooms and the welcoming feature of free, hot showers—a rare and appreciated find in many state parks. This is not just a place to sleep; it is a full-service base camp that allows Mainers to easily launch into a wide variety of activities, from a gentle hike to the panoramic summit of Bradbury Mountain to advanced mountain biking on dedicated single-track trails. It’s an ideal spot for a weekend getaway that feels remote yet remains close to the cultural and commercial centers of Southern Maine.
Location and Accessibility: Convenient Access to Coastal & Inland Attractions
The Bradbury Mountain State Park Campground is strategically positioned at 547-553 Hallowell Rd in Pownal, ME 04069, USA. Its location, situated right off Route 9, makes it highly accessible for Maine residents traveling from the Greater Portland area, Lewiston-Auburn, or the Midcoast region.
This central positioning is a major advantage for locals. The park is only about a 30-minute drive from the vibrant city of Portland, providing easy day-trip access to the city’s renowned restaurants, breweries, and cultural attractions, including the famous Portland Head Light. Furthermore, the world-class shopping and dining of Freeport, home to the flagship L.L.Bean store, is just minutes away. This combination of remote-feeling woodland camping and proximity to major attractions is hard to beat for a local Maine vacation. While its proximity to the main road, Route 9, is noted by some reviewers for occasional traffic noise, the convenience and accessibility it provides for quick weekend trips or day explorations across Southern Maine far outweigh this minor drawback for many. The campground’s entrance is well-marked and easy to navigate for tents, trailers, and RVs up to 35 feet long.

The campground was clean and well kept. The free community kitchen was a great idea Even though I didn't need it for anything. Even the bathrooms were amazingly clean and didn't have a foul odor. The showers have hot water and are free instead of coin operated. The host there was super friendly and very willing to help you with everything you needed. I would definitely come back if I pass through again. The only thing I wasn't a fan of is it was pretty much right off the main road so you can hear traffic but otherwise everything else was great.
Jul 23, 2025 · Nate SandQuiet campground with solid trails surrounding it. The staff are great. Very informative and helpful. Has plenty of bathrooms. Solid showers and a room for borrowing extra cooking utensils and other minor things you might need in a moment. Only 30 min from Portland and hour and half from Tumbledown mountain. So plenty of stuff in the area. Id check out cafe1055 if you want a good breakfest only 16 minutes away.
Aug 03, 2025 · Emmet PilsworthThis campground was just what I was looking for- peaceful and simple. There were a good amount of sites available to choose from. Rangers were always close by checking on things. For a solo female far from home, I felt safe. Showers were hot and clean, there was a little kitchen area with things you could borrow (frying pans, cups, etc.) bathroom was a 20-second walk. Site had a sturdy picnic table, water spigot and fire pit. $5 bundles of wood were available for purchase, you just had to ask a ranger. The actual state park was right across the street, and cell service was fine. You can hear the traffic from the road but it’s just white noise, I slept great. Also could hear cows mooing in the distance at 2am but it wasn’t bothersome, just funny. Would come back!
Oct 07, 2024 · Claire FisherI love this park for both hiking and camping. While many of the trails are maintained for bikes, my early morning hikes have never been endangered by riders, and I, in fact, usually only see other hikers. The camp ground hosts maintain an awesome hut full of convenience items, and the hosts themselves have been very friendly. The woods hiked through are a mix of wetlands and mostly hardwood highlands. Trails, both wide and single track, are all well maintained.
