Hawkeye Point Campground About

For us Iowans, there’s a special pride in our state’s unique landmarks, and Hawkeye Point, the highest natural elevation in Iowa, is certainly one of them. What many locals might not realize, or perhaps haven't yet explored, is the fantastic campground located right across the road: Hawkeye Point Campground. This isn't just a convenient place to stay; it's a beautifully maintained, modern camping facility that offers a comfortable base for exploring not only Iowa’s highest point but also the charming surrounding area of Sibley. For those of us looking for a well-kept, accessible, and unique camping experience within our own state, Hawkeye Point Campground truly stands out.

Hawkeye Point Campground opened in 2011, a thoughtful addition to the attractions at Iowa's highest point, which Osceola County acquired and developed to welcome visitors. This campground reflects a commitment to providing quality outdoor recreation. As visitors often note, the "cement pads looked brand new" and the "lawn was well taken care of," speaking volumes about the dedication to maintenance. This attention to detail creates a welcoming and pleasant atmosphere for all who stay, whether they're passing through on a road trip or making it their primary destination.

Beyond its pristine appearance, Hawkeye Point Campground offers the kind of amenities that make camping truly enjoyable. Reviews consistently highlight the "sparkling clean" bathrooms and showers, a crucial feature for any comfortable camping trip. The campground's proximity to the various attractions at Hawkeye Point, including the observation deck, corn crib museum, and antique farm machinery displays, provides unique opportunities for exploration right at your doorstep. For us Iowans, Hawkeye Point Campground combines the convenience of modern facilities with the allure of a distinctive state landmark, making it an excellent choice for a memorable outdoor adventure.

Location and Accessibility

Hawkeye Point Campground is ideally situated at 5463 130th St, Sibley, IA 51249, USA. This location is paramount to its appeal, as it is located directly across the road from Hawkeye Point, Iowa's highest elevation at 1,670 feet above sea level. This unique geographical feature makes the campground a pilgrimage site for "highpointers" and a fascinating destination for any curious Iowan.

The campground's accessibility is a significant benefit for local users. It's located just north of the high point, which itself is easily found off Highway 60, north of Sibley, in Osceola County. Roads leading to and around the campground are well-maintained, with crushed concrete pads at the campsites, making it suitable for both RVs and tent campers, even those with larger rigs. The straightforward drive ensures a hassle-free journey, allowing visitors to quickly settle in and begin exploring. For those of us looking for a unique and easily reachable camping spot with a built-in attraction, Hawkeye Point Campground offers unparalleled convenience.

Features / Highlights

  • Directly Across from Iowa's Highest Point: The primary highlight is its unparalleled proximity to Hawkeye Point itself. Campers can literally walk across the road to visit Iowa's highest elevation, which features unique attractions.
  • Unique Attractions at Hawkeye Point: The highest point site offers more than just a marker. Visitors can explore a silo with an observation deck offering panoramic views, a grain bin converted into a shelter house (donated by Sukup Manufacturing Co.), an informational kiosk, a mosaic display marking the high point, and an "Iowa Gothic" sign perfect for photos. There's also a walk-through "hands-on" history display in a corn crib and a large collection of antique farm machinery, providing a glimpse into Iowa's agricultural heritage.
  • Clean and Well-Maintained Facilities: Consistent positive reviews highlight the campground's pristine condition, with "cement pads looked brand new," "lawn was well taken care of," and "bathrooms and showers sparkling clean." This commitment to cleanliness significantly enhances the camping experience.

  • Historical and Educational Value: The surrounding Hawkeye Point site offers unique educational insights into Iowa's agriculture, history, and geography, including directional signs pointing to the other 49 state highpoints.

Promotions or Special Offers

As a public campground managed by Osceola County Conservation, Hawkeye Point Campground generally operates on a fixed fee schedule rather than offering commercial promotions or discounts. However, understanding its pricing structure and operational aspects is beneficial for locals:

  • Affordable Nightly Rates: The camping fees are consistently noted as being highly affordable, often around $15 to $20 per night for a site with electric and water hookups. This low cost makes it a very attractive and budget-friendly option for Iowans seeking a quality camping experience.
  • First-Come, First-Served Basis: Campsites are typically available on a first-come, first-served basis, meaning no reservations are taken. This provides spontaneity for local campers but also means it's advisable to arrive early during peak season or holidays to secure a spot.
  • Self-Service Payment: The campground often operates on an honor system for payment, where campers deposit their fees. This convenient self-service model streamlines the check-in process.
  • Year-Round Accessibility: While specific amenities like the bathhouse might be seasonal (typically April to October), the Hawkeye Point site itself is open year-round, and camping may be available for longer, weather permitting. This allows for off-season visits for those prepared for primitive winter camping.

While traditional "promotions" like percentage discounts are not a standard feature, the inherent value of Hawkeye Point Campground lies in its exceptional cleanliness, modern amenities, unique location, and very reasonable rates, which collectively offer outstanding value for Iowa residents seeking an accessible and enjoyable outdoor adventure.

A beautiful campground for the night! Cement pads looked brand new, lawn was well taken care of, and the dump station was clean. We stayed overnight as we were passing through and visited ‘Iowa’s Highest Point’ across the road.

Nice clean place with 20, 30, and 50 amp as well as water and a fire ring and picnic table at each spot. Shower house is clean and locks. No quarters are needed for the push-button showers and it warms up quickly. The only drawback is the nearby highway and train track noise, but they are not too bad.

Great little campground tucked away in some trees, near the highway. Noise levels are moderate, occasional train passing blowing its horn, but not a huge problem. Great water pressure. No sewage other than Central dumpstation. No wifi.

Wow 15.00 a night and that includes electrical and water at your campsite. They have bathrooms and a shower house an tank dump very nice very well maintained campground plenty and I mean plenty of shade trees only downside is it is next to a highway that's not too busy and an occasional train that goes by in the background but not a deal breaker by no means. Still quite peaceful here
