Introduction / Overview
For equestrian enthusiasts across Missouri and beyond, Slabtown Horse Camp LLC (formerly Slabtown Trail Rides) in Plato, MO, is truly "Missouri's best kept secret." This wonderful, clean camp has rapidly gained a reputation as a premier destination for those who love to explore the wilderness on horseback. Nestled amidst the breathtaking landscapes of the Mark Twain National Forest and bordering the Paddy Creek Wilderness, Slabtown offers direct access to over 75 miles of meticulously mapped and well-signed trails. Under the dedicated ownership of Steve and Maggie Short, who acquired the camp in June 2019, Slabtown Horse Camp has undergone significant updates and repairs, transforming it into an even more inviting and functional haven for both riders and their horses. It's more than just a campground; it's a community where "awesome hosts" go out of their way to ensure a memorable and comfortable experience. Whether you're a seasoned trail rider or simply looking for a serene getaway with your equine companion, Slabtown provides the perfect blend of natural beauty, well-maintained facilities, and genuine hospitality, making it a standout choice for horse camping in the heart of the Ozarks.
Location and Accessibility
Slabtown Horse Camp LLC is conveniently located at 13655 Slabtown Rd, Plato, MO 65552, USA. This address places it squarely within the scenic Ozarks of Missouri, specifically on the very edge of the Paddy Creek Wilderness Area and nestled within the expansive Mark Twain National Forest. Despite its seemingly remote and wild setting, the camp is accessible, allowing trailers and RVs to reach it without undue difficulty. Plato, MO, provides a quiet, rural backdrop, allowing campers to fully immerse themselves in the natural environment. The strategic location means that trailheads are located "right out of the campground," offering immediate access to the extensive network of equestrian trails. For those traveling with horses, the ease of directly entering the Mark Twain National Forest and Paddy Creek Wilderness trails from the camp is a significant advantage, eliminating the need for additional hauling. Furthermore, the camp is located close to nearby towns like Roby and Evening Shade, which offer stores for purchasing food and supplies, providing a practical balance between wilderness immersion and access to necessities. This blend of remote, natural beauty with reasonable accessibility makes Slabtown Horse Camp an ideal and sought-after destination for Missouri's equestrian community.
Services Offered
Features / Highlights
Promotions or Special Offers
Based on the provided information, Slabtown Horse Camp LLC does not appear to advertise specific, time-limited commercial "promotions" or "special offers" in the traditional sense. Its value proposition is built on its consistent quality, extensive amenities for equestrians, and the exceptional hospitality of its owners, all at a competitive rate for the specialized services it offers. However, the true "special offer" for campers at Slabtown lies in the comprehensive amenities included in the site fees: access to electric and water hookups, modern bathrooms, and crucially, direct access to 75 miles of meticulously maintained trails. For horse campers, the inclusion of covered stalls and readily available water for horses within the camp provides significant value. The general rates for sites with water and electricity are noted as $25 (double occupancy) with additional people at $5 each, and cabins at $60. Horse stalls are available for an additional $8. These rates are quite competitive given the specialized nature of the camp and the quality of the facilities and trail access provided. For the most current pricing, information on any seasonal variations, or details on potential group rates, it is always best to contact Steve and Maggie Short directly. Their focus is on providing a consistently high-quality experience rather than fluctuating discounts, making the inherent value of their offerings the primary draw.

Sep 14, 2020 · Sandra RyersonWe stayed the Memorial Day weekend, 3 nights at Slabtown. Our friends arrived with a flat tire and a leaking tire on their trailer. As they were checking in Steve had taken off the flat. He drove to town and got the tire patched for our friends. The entire weekend was marked by this pleasant hospitality. Steve & Maggie are horse people who will ride with you and help you to have the most pleasant horse camp experience. Maggie guided us on a wonderful 5 hour ride and also gave us nice directions for us to have an unguided 6 hour ride the next day. The sites are bigger and they are on track to improve all the stalls. The owners are dedicated to making campers a good horse camp experience. Definitely worth a visit to Slab town Horse camp and riding the Paddy Creek
