Holden Campground About
For Wisconsin residents seeking a tranquil escape into nature, finding the right campground can make all the difference. Holden Campground, nestled in Arkansaw, Wisconsin, offers a serene and rustic camping experience that prioritizes peace and natural beauty. Campgrounds across Wisconsin serve as vital access points to the state's diverse landscapes, from its northern forests to its southern farmlands and stunning river valleys. They provide essential facilities for various types of outdoor enthusiasts, whether they prefer tent camping under the stars or bringing their RV for a comfortable stay.
Holden Campground distinguishes itself as a smaller, quieter option, ideal for those looking to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of daily life and immerse themselves in the sounds of nature. It caters to campers who appreciate a more subdued atmosphere, where the primary attractions are the natural surroundings, wildlife, and the simple pleasure of an outdoor setting. Understanding the specific offerings and characteristics of Holden Campground is crucial for local Wisconsin users planning their next outdoor adventure, ensuring their expectations align with the park's environment and amenities. This article will delve into the factual details of Holden Campground, providing a clear and engaging overview for prospective visitors.
Holden Campground is conveniently located at N5362 County Rd N, Arkansaw, WI 54721, USA. This address places the campground in a rural setting within Pepin County, Wisconsin, offering a peaceful retreat away from urban noise. Arkansaw itself is a small community, emphasizing a connection to nature and a relaxed pace of life. For many Wisconsin residents, especially those from the western and central parts of the state, Holden Campground is an accessible destination for a weekend getaway or a longer camping trip.
Accessing the campground involves navigating County Road N, which leads to the site. Reviews mention a "steep drive down to it," which is an important consideration for RVers. While the drive down might be challenging for larger rigs, it also contributes to the secluded feel of the campground once you arrive. Due to its rural location, personal vehicles are the primary mode of transportation for reaching Holden Campground. Campers should plan to bring all necessary supplies, as nearby services in Arkansaw will be limited. For more extensive amenities, such as larger grocery stores, specialized supplies, or medical facilities, campers would likely need to travel to larger towns in Pepin County or neighboring areas. The beauty of Holden Campground's location lies in its ability to offer a true escape into nature, surrounded by the sights and sounds of the Wisconsin countryside.
Holden Campground provides a more rustic camping experience, focusing on essential services while maintaining a close-to-nature feel. Based on customer reviews and common offerings for this type of campground, campers can generally expect the following services:
- Campsites: The campground offers individual campsites suitable for both tents and RVs. Each site typically includes a new picnic table and a new fire ring, which are recent upgrades according to reviews.
- Electrical Hookups: A significant plus for campers, especially those with RVs, is the availability of "electric" hookups at the sites. This provides convenience for powering lights, small appliances, and charging devices.
- Pit Toilets: Restroom facilities consist of "pit toilets." While naturally described as having an odor and attracting flies, they provide basic and necessary sanitation for campers. A review also notes a "light that stays on all night by the toilets," which can be helpful for nighttime access.
- Carry In/Carry Out Policy: Holden Campground operates on a "carry in/carry out" policy, meaning there are "no dumpsters" on site. Campers are responsible for taking all their garbage and waste with them when they leave. This is a crucial service detail that requires campers to "plan accordingly."
- Lake Access (Trail): There is a designated "trail that goes to the lake." While it provides access to the water, the exact nature of lake use (e.g., swimming, fishing access) would need further clarification, as it's not a direct, maintained beach area.
- Self-Service Payment (Implied): While not explicitly stated, the rustic nature and pricing often suggest a self-registration or honor-system payment method for daily fees. Campers should be prepared for this.
It is important for prospective campers to be fully aware of the "carry in/carry out" policy and the nature of the pit toilets to ensure their expectations align with the facilities provided at Holden Campground.
Holden Campground offers several key features and highlights that make it an appealing choice for certain types of campers in Wisconsin, especially those prioritizing tranquility and a natural setting. However, it's also important to consider aspects noted in customer reviews for a complete picture:
- Quiet and Secluded Atmosphere: A major highlight repeatedly praised is its "Nice and quiet" and "quiet, little campground" environment. For campers seeking an escape from noise and crowds, especially during the week, this offers a peaceful retreat. One reviewer "camped during the week and had it all to myself."
- Scenic Views: The campground boasts "some nice views" and "amazing views" in the area, likely referring to the natural landscapes surrounding it, including glimpses of the lake and surrounding woodlands. This adds to the aesthetic appeal of the camping experience.
- Electrical Hookups: The availability of "electric is a plus!" is a significant feature, providing modern convenience for RVers and tent campers who need power for lights, charging devices, or small appliances, even in a rustic setting.
- New Amenities: Recent upgrades, including "new picnic tables and fire pits," enhance the comfort and usability of the individual campsites, providing a fresh and well-maintained feel to the core camping infrastructure.
- Nature Immersion (Sounds): The campground offers a rich auditory experience of nature, with "Lots of bird noises, day and night!" and the ability to "hear the frogs from the lake too." This sensory immersion is a major draw for wildlife enthusiasts.
- Lake Access Trail: The presence of "a trail that goes to the lake" allows campers to explore the nearby water body, offering opportunities for nature walks and potentially fishing (details on lake access for specific activities would need further inquiry).
However, prospective campers should be aware of some considerations based on customer feedback:
- Rustic Toilets: The reliance on "pit toilets" that "smell and there's lots of flies" is a significant point for those who prefer modern flush restrooms.
- Carry In/Carry Out Policy: The "no dumpster" rule means campers must be diligent about packing out all their trash, which requires planning.
- Steep Access Road: The "steep drive down to it" is a specific concern for RVers, suggesting careful navigation might be required, and it might be "tight quarters" for larger vehicles.
- Site Cleanliness Issues: Some sites had "garbage in quite a few of them" and "a lot of broken glass at our site," indicating that while fire rings are new, overall site cleanliness might be inconsistent, especially given the carry-in/carry-out policy.
- No Barefoot Walking Recommended: The warning "I don't recommend walking around barefoot" due to broken glass reinforces the need for caution regarding site conditions.
Overall, Holden Campground is ideal for those who value quiet, natural beauty, and electrical hookups, and are prepared for rustic toilet facilities, managing their own waste, and potentially some site clean-up.
Based on the provided information, there are no specific promotions or special offers currently advertised for Holden Campground. As a smaller, potentially municipally or county-run campground with a focus on rustic affordability, it typically operates on a straightforward daily fee structure rather than running commercial promotions.
The "offers" in this context are inherent in the campground's standard pricing and operational model:
- Consistent Affordability: The primary "promotion" is the consistent and likely low daily rate, which makes it an accessible and budget-friendly option for campers in Wisconsin. Specific pricing is not provided in the input, but the overall tone of reviews suggests it is a value-oriented choice.
- First-Come, First-Served Basis: While not a discount, operating on a first-come, first-served basis means campers can spontaneously decide to visit without needing to book far in advance, which offers flexibility.
- Quiet Weekday Stays: As noted in reviews, camping "during the week and had it all to myself" can be seen as a de facto "special offer" of tranquility and seclusion during off-peak times, providing a more exclusive experience without an added cost.

Holden Campground, situated at N5362 County Rd N, Arkansaw, WI, offers a particularly suitable camping experience for Wisconsin locals, especially those who prioritize peace, natural sounds, and a more rustic outdoor adventure. Its primary appeal lies in its "Nice and quiet" atmosphere, making it an ideal retreat from the demands of everyday life. For campers seeking solitude and a chance to truly immerse themselves in nature, the ability to have the campground "all to myself" during the week, accompanied by "Lots of bird noises, day and night!" and the croaking of "frogs from the lake," provides an unparalleled serene experience.
The presence of electrical hookups at sites is a significant "plus," offering a modern convenience that bridges the gap between primitive camping and full-service RV parks. This allows campers to enjoy the quiet, natural setting without completely sacrificing the ability to power essential devices or amenities. The recent upgrades to "new picnic tables and fire pits" also enhance the comfort and usability of the individual campsites, ensuring a pleasant stay.
While some aspects, such as the reliance on "pit toilets," the "carry in/carry out" garbage policy, and the "steep drive down," require campers to be prepared and self-sufficient, these characteristics align with a more authentic, less commercialized camping experience that many Wisconsin outdoor enthusiasts value. For locals who are comfortable with these rustic elements and prioritize a quiet environment with scenic views and the sounds of nature, Holden Campground presents an excellent and affordable option. It's a place for those who are willing to embrace the simplicity of outdoor living for the reward of tranquility and a deep connection with Wisconsin's natural beauty in Pepin County.
Customer Reviews
I enjoyed my time here! Camped during the week and had it all to myself. Nice and quiet with some nice views. The electric is a plus! There is a light that stays on all night by the toilets.. Looks like they got new picnic tables and fire pits. Lots of bird noises, day and night! Can hear the frogs from the lake too. There is a steep drive down to it…RVers. Again, this was during the week and it is tight quarters so take that into mind.
Pros: It's a quiet, little campground. There were a couple other people there besides me so that's perfect The picnic tables are new as well as the fire rings. There is a trail that goes to the lake, so that was nice. The views in that area are amazing! Cons: As I took a walk around, I noticed the fire rings don't get cleaned out so there was garbage in quite a few of them. It is a carry in/carry out campground so that means no dumpster. Plan accordingly. They have pit toilets so naturally they smell and there's lots of flies. I don't recommend walking around barefoot. We had a lot of broken glass at our site. Overall, despite the icky toilets and garbage, we will be back.
Immediately after exiting our vehicle we were swarmed by mosquitoes. We arrived to find this place full of drunk teenagers/twenty somethings. The fire ring was full of empty beer cans. Large breed dogs were not restrained properly. Someone was in the spot that we had reserved. We tried moving to a spot that was open to find out that the electric didn’t work (which is why the other people took our spot). We tried calling the number but only got a county line…no answer, no help. The site didn’t have water…the communal water had a warning on it “due to nitrate contamination, this water should not be consumed by children, pets or pregnant women”. We left for a nicer camp ground The Great River Harbor. I understand that this was a low cost place, but I wouldn’t have stayed if they paid me. Lesson learned…beware!
Drove 2.5 hours looking forward to a city park campground only to find out there is no possibility of filling up your RV when you get there. But you can wash your hands through their sink located mid campground. 1 person there when we showed up on Friday night and he was using a 1 gallon milk jug to fill up his camper. We were also told power was available. We tried 2 camp sites and neither worked on the 30 amp circuit. But when I got home and plugged into my own 30 amp circuit, everything worked just fine. Then comes the mosquitos and hornet nest infestation. The mosquitos almost carried my 1 year old son away. We barely got out because of the mosquitos that stood in our way. Our 2.5 our campground trip turned into a 5 hour trip back home. We got our money back but spent $100 in fuel to go there, and go home. Long ride home and very disappointed.
The campground is quiet and close to the lake. Each site has a fire pit and picnic table. The pit toilet/bathroom was clean. We were the only ones camping when we stayed on a weeknight, so it felt spacious. There isn’t separation between sites, so if it is busy, it may be a different experience. The fire rings don’t have grates, but there are a few grills available around the campground.
