For dedicated New Hampshire outdoor enthusiasts, there’s a special appeal to campsites that are slightly more rugged and truly connected to the state’s wild waterways. Horse Meadow Campsite in Haverhill, NH, is exactly that kind of destination. It is not a bustling, amenity-rich RV park, but rather a primitive, secluded site primarily designed for those exploring the majestic Connecticut River—specifically, as a key stop along the renowned Connecticut River Paddlers Trail.
This campsite offers a genuine backcountry experience that many locals cherish. It’s a place where the primary focus is the river and the surrounding natural beauty. The simplicity of the site, which offers the necessities for an overnight stay but little else, ensures that the camper's attention remains squarely on the tranquility of the environment. While some modern conveniences are deliberately absent, the reward is an unparalleled sense of solitude and direct access to one of New England’s most important waterways.
The site has a long history, being one of the first established campsites on the Upper Connecticut River. Its maintenance and operation, often supported by local community efforts and organizations like the Thetford Academy, underscore its importance as a vital link in the regional paddling network. Horse Meadow is a testament to the New Hampshire tradition of low-impact, high-nature camping—a perfect place to truly disconnect and embrace the Granite State’s wilderness.
Horse Meadow Campsite is located in a secluded area of Haverhill, NH, with a general location identifier of 4X38+6W5. This coordinates-based address is typical for remote sites along the Connecticut River, indicating its primary access is not via a simple roadside entrance but through the waterway itself.
The core of its location is its position directly on the Connecticut River, across from the adjacent island, making it a critical waypoint on the Connecticut River Paddlers Trail. For New Hampshire locals who are passionate about kayaking, canoeing, or paddle boarding, this site is strategically placed for multi-day river trips.
The site's accessibility is unique and is primarily achieved by water. Access is via a set of removable stairs situated just past the southern tip of the adjacent island. This characteristic makes it suitable for:
The location in Haverhill places it in the Upper Valley region of New Hampshire, offering convenient, though still remote, access for residents coming from the Concord area, the Lakes Region, or even the White Mountains. Its isolation is a feature, not a drawback, for those seeking a true wilderness feel.
As a designated Paddlers Trail campsite, Horse Meadow’s "services" are intentionally minimal and focused on conservation and basic needs. Campers should be prepared for a primitive experience, which requires a degree of self-sufficiency common among experienced New Hampshire outdoor enthusiasts.
It is important to understand that this site does not offer electricity, running water beyond the river, showers, or formal RV hookups. It is a genuine primitive camping experience.
Horse Meadow Campsite’s highlights are defined by its environment and purpose—making it a memorable and unique destination for local paddlers and nature lovers.
The unique challenge of accessing the site via removable stairs, and the resulting deep water at the bottom, becomes a part of the adventure—a memorable feature that differentiates it from standard drive-up camping.
Since Horse Meadow Campsite is part of the larger Connecticut River Paddlers Trail system and is managed or stewarded by local organizations, it operates without a traditional public business storefront or direct phone line.

Nice campsite. You can hear the noise of traffic on Route 10. Some trash around the site but not a lot. Those stairs from the water to the campsite...the water is DEEP after that last step. It made getting the dogs off the paddleboard bit tricky. Getting back on was easier because the stairs seem to float a bit so I could get the bow right on a stair for stability. I could not find the privy but I am sure it is there somewhere.
